I just realised that ‘centimetre’ has the word ‘cent’ in it, which is from ‘perCENT’ which means out of 100, so that could be a way to work out that there are 100 cm in a metre!!

I am also a teacher (not mathematics) and I am surprised that you are so impressed with this lesson ... In the metric system, everything starts with a meter (or divide or multiply by 10, 100, 1000, 1 million ...). Is decimeter a common use measurement, that would seem to be the apparent exchange for what we use '1foot/feet' lenght rule tools for? For example in schools and the like, we keep a foot long rule in our supplies, do they keep a decimeter length rule tool or something of the like?

Germany here. :) No, a decimeter is very uncommon to work with in everyday life, because in most cases, you would either be using centimeters (or millimeters, if you want to be very exact) or jump to meters. Rulers are mostly 30 cm long, which is very close to one foot, I believe. As for (human) heights, you would say that someone is either 1.78 m or 178 cm, but certainly not 17.8 dm.
