It's also because people lose hair. On earth when you lose hair it falls to the ground, maybe get stuck on your feet, most probably be gone when you swipe the floor. In space, it would float around, maybe get stuck in some instrument, or be inadvertently inhaled by someone. Yikes!

I just use a regular washing machine and dryer. The astronauts don't wash clothing, they just wear it multiple days and then change to new.
