Madurai Food Tour - Madurai PAROTTA - Egg PAAYA - Fishlette (Fish Omelette)

- Welcome to the food capital of Tamil Nadu. We had the good fortune to taste a number of unique dishes on our trip down south. So come and discover along with us the delectable food of Madurai.
There are a number of places in Madurai that are just serving cold drinks to battle the hot weather of the region. One such drink is Elaneer Sherbet which is made from coconut water, coconut cream, some syrup and ice. We then visited Sun Lemon Tea Stall, where ironically we had Sukku/Chukku Malli Coffee. This unique drink is supposed to be a cure for cough, containing dried ginger, coriander seeds and fenugreek.
Along the way we tried a few sweets that almost like candies. Sweets like javvu mithai, thaen mithai, sooda mithai or elandha pazham are available in a lot of shops on the streets. Our next stop was Kavannah Parotta Kadai in Natham. Here we tried the iconic deep fried parotta which crushed and topped with mutton gravy and some pieces of dry or chukka mutton along with mint chutney. The crispy and flaky parotta goes perfectly well with the melt-in-the-mouth mutton pieces and gravy.
Later we visited the flower market in Madurai where we tried Valakkai/ Vazhakai Bajji or Plantain Fritters. The plantains are coated with a batter of chickpea flour and spices and then deep fried, the perfect evening snack. We then went to Rani Vilas for some paniyaram omelette, served with rice, mutton, bone marrow and some chutneys. Here we also tried Ratha Poriyal, a dish prepared with goat's blood. After that we tried an interesting drink called Koozh. Another cool porridge drink to enjoy in the hot weather.
We landed at Ajmeer Mahal for quite a wholesome meal. Here we had the ceylon parotta that is very similar to the bengali mughlai parantha; Vazhiyal whoch basically scrambled eggs with spices; and kothu parotta, a blend of minced parotta pieces with curry leaves, onions, spices and eggs. For some more refreshments we went to the KRK Milk Depot. We sweetened our mouth with some milk halwa and some rose milk and badam milk.
In the evening we tried an interesting chaat called egg paaya, which is made from mutta bonda/egg bonda, onion samosa, pattaani gravy and topped with onions. A very refreshing and spicy dish. For all the fish lovers we discovered paradise. At PSA Fish, you get everything that lives in water. We mainly tried Tandoori Fish and prawns, Prawn biryani, fish fingers, fish omelette and a lot more. Finally we came to an end of the food tour with a nice cup of strong coffee at PTR Tea Stall and Snack Bar.

I'm going to starve myself for a year then visit Madurai, and eat till I drop! The varieties and the options are so vast I'm amazed. We get Indian food here in Sydney but I'm always told by my Indian mates NOTHING is close to what one gets back home in TN. Now I'm hungry and I'm annoyed I can't get anything that was shown here! 😩😩😩 why did i watch this?!

Proud to be a Madurayan
11:27 Folding leaf inwards means you like the food.
Folding leaf away means you don't like it... But people in TN show this gesture only on grieving event like funerals
Nice to see North Indian trying Tamil Nadu food and also eating in hand. For your kind information, the real taste of the food will come from eating with your right hand. Hope you enjoyed the Tamil Nadu hospitality. Congrats all the way from Canada
Vijay Kumar what about Southpaws 👿
Indians eat only with hand no suprised for north or south. we're all Indians
Even in North most people eat with hands only at home. We use spoons and forks mostly while eating in public.

Did you know? Meenakshi amman temple made to the top 15 new list of seven wonders of the land. But it did not move further just because of poor maintainance.. It is one of the structure that stood tall even after attacks from Malik kafoor of Aludhin khiljis ministry..Mandapam, kulam (pond) can jus lighten anybodys heart.♥️ Namma Madurai.
Meenakshi Temple is so beautiful. Infact, Temples in South India are extremely beautiful. Now, I m missing Filter Coffee. We don't get it here in Bengal. My favorite Temple is Suchidram Temple near Kanyakumari. Surprisingly, it's not very popular among Tourists, but it's hella beautiful.
Ye sauth Indian pehle Punjab me rehtey teh
Actually killji destroyed quarter of the temple, and it reconstructed later by an pandian king .
Fucking killji, he looted most of treasury also .

I am feeling to visit Madurai just to eat these...
For a Foodie, especially non-veg, Madurai is a Heaven....also you can get food round the clock....yes...even at 3am....
Madurai is the best place for country style food.!!!
Folding plantain leaf is not liking or disliking food. It shows the place. When we attend a Marriage function we fold it inwards signal that I want more such good functions in the family. For death ceremonies etc the leaf is folded outwards signal that I don't want such functions in the family. We get up together when we are finished eating or at-least ask permission especially elders before closing our eating and walking out. The same rules are being followed in South Korea as-well.
msanand7 very useful cultural tip.
Do south Koreans use plantain leaf for eating dish?
My favorite sugar balls (thein mittai) 😍😘😘😘😘
