Take the Time, Savor the Journey - The Slow Baja Story

After decades of traveling to Mexico, Michael Emery had formed a philosophy around his love for everything the Baja peninsula offered, and the necessity in taking time to absorb one's surroundings.
What better a sensory vehicle than a 1971 Toyota Land Cruiser, complete without a roof or windows, allowing all the senses in each mile to be absorbed, felt, and appreciated.
“Slow Baja,” was born from mindful travel, most often found while moving at a slow pace.
We sent long time collaborator and friend Sam Hurly to Baja California, Mexico alongside Slow Baja for the 2022 NORRA Mexican 1000, where Emery leads the slowest non-race class in the “Slow Baja Safari Class.”
1,300 miles over 5 days to the bottom of the Baja peninsula can create a dirty truck, but armed with the best and latest road-trip cleaning innovations from Turtle Wax, Sam and Michael cleared the week’s (and years) of dirt and grime off in no time, right in the hot Mexico sun.

The truth is, I’d only ever heard the one podcast of yours re the Valle de Guadalupe and it was just this past December when I was making my plans to travel Baja for a couple of months. But I recalled it *immediately* when I saw your cool old truck at Rancho Santa Ines on Monday morning. I felt absolutely starstruck (weird, I’m know but it’s true). Thank you so much for the decal!! I was waiting for that “one special” sticker to add to my girl Pearl’s back window and the Slow Baja fits the bill perfectly. Smiling as I type this note of thanks. Oh … and I’ve been in Guadalupe the past couple of days. I’ve actually walking the roads and photographing many of the wineries and now just swinging in my hammock … oh.so.slowly. ~Laurie

As I happen to have a 1965 Scout 80 and taking the top off and dropping the windshield down to take in a road trip really says that there's nothing else really like it. I am so glad that I saw you at the finish line on Norra LIVE with your Land Cruiser! Definitely, a lot to learn from you from this event. So awesome to see what a collaborative effort the LOCALS and crews along the way attributed to your experience!
