My husband Don Wood was a proud Hannibal Pirate football lineman 1957 class. Deep roots in Hannibal. He still has family that owns Bay View . Don is 82 and still talks of Hannibal High. 🏈🏈
Great video!!! I lived in Hannibal in 1980. I was 4. It was kinda ironic that blue building you mentioned, that was the house I lived in. Where the parking lot is there was a 2 story building there.
When heading north on US 61 you were almost within sight of Hannibal-LaGrange University when you made that left turn to look at Walmart. It's at US 61 & MO 168. Private Lib Arts, around 900 students, affiliated with MO Baptist Assn. In 1989 there was a massive fire that destroyed the admin, auditorium, gym, and cafeteria bldgs. A complete rebuild and upgrade were completed primarily funded through church offerings. Yes, Hannibal is a college town.
Please come visit us again. You missed a couple of wonderful neighborhoods. You got one street of Millionaires Row but there is another (5th Street) with some finely restored homes. Also, check out the neighborhoods along Palmyra Road and Country Club Drive.
Once off the freeway, you passed on the left an Ayerco, one turns there to go upwards, and I live in that nest. The run down houses are rentals. Some have recently sold to homeowners from the various exodus's who are in residence. CA is here and also a massive amount from IL. Houses are moving fast and have usually sold before arriving on Zillow. Crime: Hannibal attracts Harley biker tribes. The Main Street shown was off. It can be so congested, it is almost hopeless to drive. There is a business flee away from the river due to flooding.
I've lived in Hannibal almost all my life I was born raised there in Hannibal now I've been in Oklahoma City about 14 years thank you you made my day thank you Merry Christmas and have a good day bye bye
My family and I drove over 2 hours to get to Hannibal. I thought it would be a quaint, little historic town but when we got there, most of the town was run down, the attractions were tacky and sad. The only thing worth doing was taking the riverboat ride. It's sad that a town with this kind of history is so pathetic looking.
You missed so much of this town and what makes it great for the people who care about it. Small town America is having a rough time. Has been for several years. Not cool to make fun of all the Mark Twain attractions. These people are proud of who they are and their heritage. Come through sometime with a less negative attitude and tour it with a resident of the town. You might see a different picture. By the way, the Wal-mart crack was crap. Its the only big department store. No Target or Meijer. The grocery store stays busy too but somehow no cheap shot there. Surprised Dollar General wasn't featured. Small towns are not like big cities and they're very glad they aren't. If you don't want to embrace it, don't go.
@@ChrisHarden I may do that one day but you missed my point. I've skimmed several of your videos and the comments left. Similar scenarios. You have to know these towns to know what makes them great. Just driving randomly tells you very little. Get in touch with a local. Talk to the mayor's office. Find out why people choose to live there. Small towns aren't just the statistics. Crime, drug use, etc is everywhere. Painting a small town in a bad light doesn't help the towns. They need to be built up not pushed further down. Your videos and statistical accuracy is great. Can't knock ya on that a bit. Just a bit of constructive criticism for future videos
On the right at 4:08 is Mark Twain’s boyhood home. Built in 1844. You can’t really see it in the video though. It’s technically off of Hill Street which is a pedestrian plaza... Cars aren’t aloud on the street where his boyhood home is. I probably could’ve tried to get a better view of it for the video though.
There's something kind of beautiful about a constant stream of people taking over the tourist attraction jobs over the generations. But I just wonder how they handled a lot of things. Who and when was the first tour guide meeting where they said "Yeah, okay, listen up, from now on, that guy, that was Jim. Just Jim. Got it guys? I know Jill wasn't here last week, so yesterday's little slip up is understandable, but let's keep it straight from now on guys."

You can't deny that this town is pretty darn cool. It's hills and it being on the river. Also some really neat buildings and homes

Surprised you didn't go by Twain's boyhood home. It's on Main St and is a museum now.
You drove through my neighborhood. I'm glad you featured some of the awesome restored and kept up vintage homes we have here.
The greenhouse at 5:45 used to belong to my family. I helped put it up in the late 90's. I saw my truck at 10:14!

Riverview Park, Mark Twain Riverboat, The Museum, and The Mark Twain Cave and the Norman Rockwell paintings of Huck and Tom. etc Many enjoyable hours.

Downtown historic Hannibal is kinda cool, but the surrounding town is kinda run down
Agreed
I totally agree brother.
Sad thing is that it's still doing a lot better than the towns surrounding it.
we were thinking of staying at the GarthSide Wooded Bed and Breakfast. Is there any one here that has stayed there?
You should go all the way up m53/ vandyke through all the mile roads in michigan
Was wondering if there are any old structures still standing that were in existence when Mark Twain was alive?

That town hasn't changed much at all since I've visited there as a kid back in 2006.
Hannibal loves TWAIN, but he had mixed feelings about IT.

When are you going to video of Kansas City Missouri (aka Missouri's largest city).
Your opening county in Illinois was Adams County not Pike County.
Nope. It was Pike.
