      It is a foam glue. Foam is polyeurethane based and doesn't play well with most adhesives. Below is a link.

      I'll do you one better. It is not home-made. Here is a link below!
      It is a siphon gun. You can actually get a cheap one from Harbor freight. Any of these you get just know that if you don't oil the connecting pieces and let it sit too long it will become really hard to separate. But the kind of glue that works on foam and things is pretty intensive stuff. You can also use a 3M adhesive spray can that you can get from the home depot. Just check that it works for foam.

      You have a good eye. This is an apprentice upholsterer who did all this work start to finish and you're right-- there is a lot of room for improvement. However the principles are still good.
