The Hebrew word which was originally used is haš·šā·ma·yim which can also be interpreted as the skies the biblical authors use this alot in the old testament when differentiating the land and the sky. Also be aware that there are also 3 heavens refered in the bible the sky we see , the heavens where the stars are and the heaven where God lives . Paradise is indeed an heavenly realm in other words spiritual realm in which the father's were but they did not Go to where God the father dwells until the ascension of our Lord Jesus.
