I have two Aveo's, and both have 150,000+ miles which I am on them which I am told is pretty rare for a Aveo and I run nothing but Amsoil products in them and have changed the timing belts every 55,000 miles, but seeing videos like this scares me because it could just happen at any time! Thanks for the video :)
If anyone needs one of these motors I am parting out a 2005 Aveo that has 88,000 miles, the previous owner had the timing belt replaced as maintenance but I don't think he had the plastic idler pulley changed ,anyway the car was sideswiped by a Jeep on the passenger side but runs extra good ,the motor is available ,it has a 5 speed manual transmission , nice bumpers ,hood, lights, grille, glass, trunklid and lots more -I am located just north of Pittsburgh,PA
Yes it did flare all 4 pistons did not gouge cylinders. After talking it over with the owner we just decided to put a crate motor in. Car only had 68K so it was a good call instead of just putting a salvage yard head on it thanks for watching.
Is the timing belt idler pulley disintergration just an occasional thing with these? I drove a rental Aveo back in 06 and it impressed me with it's ride comfort, quiet and performance from that 1.6. I've thought of getting one for the son IF he gets a job and will pay on it insure it etc.
I have replaced the valves that bent, don't have to replace the engine and does not do major engine damage at all.Don't lose the keepers is the big thing
Hey I'm wondering how u got the head off because there is a lot in the way and I seem to be having some issues with it so if u got any tips I would greatly appreciate them thx for the vid btw
I have heard of always doing the water pump on any car that's getting the belt changed which sounds logical it's easier to change everything out while apart than to go back later and replace stuff piecemeal.
+rick drennan no bleeder but what I have to remove stubborn trapped air is a spill free funnel got it from napa under $30 put it on ur filler neck fill rad leave funnel 3/4 full start engine turn heater temp control to high do not turn on fan when engine comes up to temp and t-stat opens coolant system will burp and with funnel in place when it burps it will take in coolant instead of air hope this helps
From what I've been reading is that they have a problem with timing belts snapping and idler pulleys breaking. GM stiffed a lot of people on this. Since it's an interference engine, when something goes wrong with the timing, your odds of the engine surviving are slim to none. If looking to buy one, then ask the owner if the belt has been replaced and for proof. If not sure than get it replaced asap if you buy the vehicle.
No I put a SURE FIRE reman in from auto zone if it's your car u can try to put a head on it but any marks in the combustion chamber can detonation also when the pistons hit the valves your bearings (rods & mains) take the brunt of that force causing flat spots and lower oil pressure which will eventually will cause total engine failure if the detonation doesn't get u first THANKS FOR WATCHING
@@DIY_IT_DUGG This has just happened to me do you think there is a chance my head is ok this happened at low RPM or if the idler goes it's just now you need a new head. very low on the $ and was hoping I would be able to fix it with a timing belt kit
Hi, I have a question that has nothing to do with this video ! But do you know if there is a bleeder for the coolant system? Or do you just add coolant in the reservoir until it gurgles with the blower fan on? Etc...
Disregard that last comment I made vids of motor swap but some how erased half of vid so I will be adding a install and break in of new motor vid hope every one enjoys
I agree you can't blame it on the manufacture it our responsibility to properly maintain our vehicles the info is out there what needs done and when but as a garage owner I see a lot of work from irresponsible car owners
Did the impact from the valves flare the pistons and gouge the cylinders?the contact looked like it was right on the edge in all 4 corners of each piston....like i tell all my costumers..preventive maintenance is everything...either 500 now or 2000 later..Good vid!
I too have an 05 Aveo that I just bought. Do you recall how much the replacement motor costed? It's good for now, but should something catastrophic happen not within the scope of routine maintenance, I'd like to make sure I have enough in savings. Thanks!
This is why I bought my Mitsubishi Mirage. Timing chain. Belts on interference engines make no sense to me, they bring mechanics lots of money, that's about it. I'll check my chain guides at 200k, you aveo owns keep changing them belts on time.
Yup and that's what u get with the new timing set oem or aftermarket the only improvement I've seen is the new thermostat housings are aluminum now not plastic and the did that cause of failure problems
changed my belt and trans flush @ 70,000 new coli pack and plugs at 100.000 got 140,000 on it now struts are shot so gonna drive until trans or motor blows
Yea I have only seen this twice and have herd of it a couple times and in all cases the timing set was not changed at proper mileage or just the belt was changed and not the pump and idlers these are not bad cars if maintained properly if my boy could drive I would buy one for the right price
also are these people just driving there vehicles when they hear a noise and just ignore it? cant blame it all on gm. timing belts need changed at oem intervals. some 20000, some 60000, some 100000, etc
+Jjjjj no trick to it if it looks like it in the way take it off know what I'm sayin did u take intake manifold off if not try it makes a lot more room
I just don't understand why the entire engine has to be ruined because of a timing belt failure? Is it possible to make the engine in such a way that just because the timing belt breaks all you do is replace the timing belt? Is that not a cost effective option when making the car? I'm not a mechanic I don't know any of this... but what a price to pay (no pun intended) for simply not changing your timing belt soon enough.
oatcircles This car has an interference engine, meaning that the pistons and valves interfere with one another if the timing belt breaks. Many other car engines are made the same way. There are also engines made that are non-interference, and if the timing belt breaks on those, there is no damage to the rest of the engine. I believe that a manufacturer can get better performance from a given engine size with the interference design, but it has obvious drawbacks if the maintenance schedule is not followed.
I got a 2009 Aveo5 it overheated because the engine eat the coolant. Well finally got it done. Removed the head cleaned the head with oven cleaner. At a car wash bay. Derusted the exhaust manifold and some other stuff. As I worked on it I thought the problem was the head gasket. (1 st. time working on this car) Looks like the problem was the plastic thermostat housing that bolts to the drivers side of the engine. The rubber 'O' ring that fits against the cylinder head blew out causing the engine to loose the coolant. Again junk GM designing. No plastic parts should not be used on the engine. Bought a new one thru rockauto.com That piece should have been made of aluminum. As for the plastic timing pulley would be better to have a local machineshop make one out of solid steel and press the two ball bearings in. That plastic pulley breaking like that is very common with those cars 2007 and back.
Genius idea with the oil change stickers!

1st belt change was 70 now I got 140 on mine no special oils except mobile 1 syn gonna drive it till she blows

Okay thanks! I'll try it, I just want that plastic thermostat housing off my car before it breaks apart on the way to work!
How much was the replacement motor and was it new or was it used
$2800 sure fire from autozone
I had my Aveo timing belt replacement and when I got it back it didn't run well what happened?
The probably have it off by a tooth. So it’s either running advanced or retarded. Your check engine light should be on if that’s what happened.

did you just put a junkyard head and leave the Pistons as they were? it won't cause any problems if the Pistons have marks like that?

Do you remember how many expansion plug the Aveo Engine has?
It sucks they build vehicles as cheaply as they do but this is what keeps people like me in business

But it was not the timing belt it was the bad design of GM Deawoo that put a plastic pulley in. The pulleys should have been Metal.
Genius idea with the oil

The motor was around $2800. That's for a long block crate motor from auto zone

hddm3 My 2007 Pontiac Wave had timing belt replaced at 180k. not the tensioners though. I run it hard and it’s still going at 252k, knock on wood

My dog (Peanut) has been employee of the month for the last 15 years I'll tell him u said hi
This pretty much writes-off an older motor. It really is not cost-effective to neglect to change the drive belt to the cams.

caduceus33 Thank you for the information!
if only you could focus on the the part you R working on but for that ression i am out
The job isn't that hard but putting the same garbage back in without improved parts is assinine.
dammit I knew this was a crap motor, I had a feeling it was hitting the valves and then the sound went away as it gets cranked over more.
Should be a timeing. Chane thats how gm rip people off you buy a car and when the belt gets old you looze your motor
Or just replace the belt at the correct time. These aveos need the belt changed every 50k so this belt was 15k miles over due for a change.
bye the way nice dog too!
I made a vid of removal
I got them off the web www.autoshopexpress.com it been great having them
Chevvy, chrysler, ford...why do people even buy these plastic toy cars?
the car is made in North Korea.
Typical chevvy engineering.
