We are informed by what we hear, by what we practice, by what we play. Eventually, we become a better version of ourselves as musicians. But we never stop exploring, improving, and HAVING FUN. As a bassist, John is a wonderful partner. Only had one brief encounter at a jazz workshop, but it was a real joyful experience.
Conscious agogic, with the sensitivity of the jazz musician, can be a new interesting paradigm to explore... Or at least a nice colour to add, with syncope and polyrithms
John is an incredible player and educator. I was fortunate to get in about 8 lessons yrs ago was he was swamped teaching at many schools. Those lessons were invaluable for me to this day, That being said, I'm not a fan of this mathematical approach. I know it can work for certain folks, but thinking in terms of melodies is something I always try to do these days and only think mathematically when I have to, perhaps, when I need to analyze something, break it down etc. That happens of course. I don't mean to diminish John's video here or any of his videos or material. As a matter of fact, I don't think I can. Lol! I know John is a big proponent of melodic playing, phrasing etc.
I’ve been thinking of music lately as nutrition. If I don’t have a gig coming up, I’m more likely to listen to candy and sweets because it makes me feel good. If I have a gig coming up, I feel inclined to become a vegetarian. My main concern is getting enough calories each day. I want fats, proteins, and carbs. On the day of a gig, I need veggies, but I don’t necessarily need to be a vegetarian. Meat and potatoes is fine. If someone offers me a treat, I don’t have to deny it. The point it is, what are the means, and what is the end? What is going to get people dancing and stay on the dance floor, and also, even if nobody is dancing, what are people going to feel along with you?
When you eat chicken what comes out is... Energy... Yes, energy... That's also what I was thinking. Definitely what I was thinking at that moment in time.
We all know John Riley.. is the master.. but does he seem a bit like a a punch drunk boxer compared to his prime? Just asking because prime John Riley was a beast among beasts..
This man is such a legend... Thank you for uploading this, JPBouvet !
His Last words in the end are the Most Important ones. For people who ask „when do i Need this?“. So wise. Enjoyed this Video Pretty much

Thanks, that’s the badger! 🙏🏻
righteous!
What kind of snare drum is he playing? It looks like copper. I thought he was a through-and-through Yamaha maple snare player.
Living legend.
Was that drummer you were referring to Pete Cater?
