I agree 100%. 10 bit 422 on a full frame $3-$4000 camera is potentially a game changer. The big cinema cameras are moving towards full frame, but you can get a $3-4000 package that delivers Netflix spec in full frame. Anyone who doesn't see how this could be a big deal is myopic.

This is an exciting little camera though and I’m sure for short sit down interviews it’s TC will suffice.

Why not just be happy that the mirrorless market is heating up, and the future will be filled with innovation from all sides? There will always be pros and cons to different systems.

Well it doesn't seem that Nikon has innovated at all with the Z series... so they aren't putting pressure on Sony to innovate faster. By most accounts this is a huge flop. I just heard that the Z7 has been delayed by months now because Nikon is seeing how bad they dropped the ball. Sony shooters hoped for more from Nikon...

      Nikon Z6 = 10 bit 4:2:2 full frame 4k hybrid camera for 2 thousand dollars. That's a first.
The delays are because preorders are out the door and the factory cannot keep up, not because "they dropped the ball" .. What planet are you on Kyle? Try to be objective, for goodness sakes. @@declanmurphy1006 my opinion is that they are using the "we are selling them too fast excuse" as cover for seeing all the negative reviews and going back and addressing some of the deficiencies. Nikon marketed this as a game changer... If so, they should've known that demand would be high. It just doesn't line up with what they have marketed. Only time will tell, and I guess we may never know why it is truly delayed. Maybe it is selling too fast and they aren't prepared, but you have to admit that it's possible I'm right too. Rolling shutter is likely to be problematic though. It takes too much processing power to resolve that much information in such a small package without overhearing. So for video the Z6 (like the new A7 series) is only good for slow pans and no fast moving objects across the frame. Rolling shutter is the issue everyone seems to be ignoring. Wish these cameras have global shutter, but the processing power (for the size) just isn't there yet.

    • @thatchinaboi
      @thatchinaboi 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi, Caleb, I’m at the CES in LV and the rep at the Nikon booth told me a few things that you might be interested in hearing: the Z6 was video-centric to begin with, whatever that meant; there’s a firmware that’s being cleaned up that will give the Z6 eye-AF; that same firmware will give you 4.2.2 10-bit RAW output through the HDMI port. Thought you might want to hear that.

Hi Caleb, I have subscribed now for a month as becoming interested in video, why you ask? I'm a high school sport photographer (4 yrs) with Nikon equipment, lots of it, D5, D500 and on down but never interested in video until the Virus hit. With nothing to do, I purchased the Z6 / 24-70 f4 and FTZ adapter. This thing is so cool, tack sharp and with the third firmware upgrade 3.0 eye auto focus is amazing. and the Nikon color is always spot on. All my Nikon glass works great as does some Tamron and Sigma. Its opened up a whole new world for me and I've learned soooo much from your channel. You have a confident and calm delivery and explain things so well. Heck, my Small rig, FTZ mount, mic and rail system came in today. Thanks so much Caleb for your channel., Ted in Sebastian, Fl

Great video Caleb! Your points about 10 bit video and colour science are spot on. Most other camera reviewers are dismissing the importance of these two features. Regarding 10 bit 4:2:2 - Nikon doesn't have a cinema line so they have nothing to lose by going hard after good video.
After almost 20 years of shooting on digital cameras (primarily stills) I can say that for me, a camera's colour signature is paramount. I fully realize what colour processing you can do in post for both stills and video, but the initial palette is a huge factor. I look forward to seeing what Nikon can deliver for video in this regard.

If you would buy this camera specifically for video, I'd say you should also consider Blackmagic's upcoming Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. It will have 4K 60fps 12-bit CinemaDNG RAW, for only $1300. Of course if you want to take stills this isn't really an option.

I was first contemplating between sony a7iii and fuji xt3,but after using them, ergonomically both were uncomfortable to hold .I then tried the z6 ,which was amazing .The quality of the camera is top notch.
For me the z6 is the camera to buy.
    My reasons:
    -Good colour science,better than sony.
    -Good ergonomics
-Im not a pro so 1 card slot is fine.even if i had two card slots i would not use it for redundancy, maybe for more storage.
-good battery life.(I read quite a bit about it ,and all reviewers claim its atleast 1000 shots)
-lens for me( i was going to buy 35 or 50 1.8 and a f4 zoom with a7iii which nikon has natively.Thats all I need.)
    -intervalometer
-the lcd is awesome ,2.1 m dots
    -weather sealing
    -FF(wanted to upgrade form a 70d)
    -4k30p no crop,1080 120p no crop
8 bit video is fine for my needs.
    -usb charging
    -customisable modes (missing on xt3)
    -nice evf
    -silent shooting
    -ibis
    -good lowlight
    -lots of buttons for customisation.

A few days ago, Larry, but we're not talking about ergonomics anyway. The Sony/Nikon/Canon etc colors are online for everyone to see. The A73 has definitely improved Sonys color science, but they still have work to do. It's interesting you brought up "using a Sony camera" because ergonomics are another area where Sony fall behind. I like Sony cameras in other ways. I find it strange how Sony fanboys so often turn these discussions into personal attacks. My non biased, objective opinion, is that Sony have been very innovative in many areas, but Nikon are still ahead when it comes to color science. That's not a personal attack on anyone.

So good to hear this. I was pretty sure that the majority of negative reviews were from the people who were unable to appreciate the adaptability of the Nikon Z and its ability to evolve a niche. Coming to the camera without prejudice was what we needed to hear from reviewers. It was clear to me that the modular nature combined with superior image science was the beacon for users who were not the typical Nikon DSLR users. It also had to be able to go further and deeper than they current mirrorless champions. The Z series looks like a powerful first shot. Firmware revisions will strengthen the performance, lenses will appear that will be geared to maximising the technical advantages of the very short lens to sensor distance. The form factor and a suitable rig will put it into the arena of being a powerful cinema grade camera. Good work Nikon. The naysayers decrying the prices need to see Z series in in the context of the professional cinema gear it can emulate at a fraction of their prices. This was a good assessment of how z-series will attract more and different users to Nikon without undermining Nikon’s other product lines.

You know me, Caleb. I'm the "10-bit or Bust" guy. I'm not put off by having to record externally for 10-bit. If I want to record ProRes with my GH5, I have to use my Ninja Inferno monitor. No big deal. It's worth the extra set up. As far as color science goes, you have to admit that the first sample video Nikon put out was pretty bad. You couldn't miss those blown out highlights. I was rather shocked that Nikon put that out. I hope that Nikon goes one step further and puts out a "camera body / lens" bundle so that people can start shooting right away. I got my GH5 as a bundle with the extremely sweet Panasonic Leica 12mm-60mm f2.8 lens. I also have to say that the upcoming BMPCC4K camera is going to compete with Nikon Z6/7 as far as choices go. I like to see what other people experiences are like before I consider buying another camera. So, of course, I will be looking forward to your review on the new Nikon cameras.

"Small cinema camera package," that was exactly my point. The Z6 is definitely of greatest interest to me. Still I don't see the need to chunk my GH4. The M43 is a way bigger sensor than the old 16mm, and photographic 35mm is bigger than motion picture 35mm due to the orientation, as you know.
Nikon has put together something here. I hope they do well with it.

I'm primarily a stills photographer. I'd love a Z6 for personal use, but it's a bit expensive for that.
Once I saw that Nikon was releasing a battery "pack" for it, and not a traditional vertical grip, it dawned on me that Nikon was pushing the video capabilities of these new cameras hard. Why? Who shoots video vertically? Couple that with the crazy write speed you get with the (admittedly single) XQD card, and you have a pretty solid video camera.

How did the Nikon Z6 work out for you? I'm looking to upgrade from a micro 4/3 to a Full frame for various reasons. I read reviews from other users of the Z6 that the tilting screen is flimsy and weak, and the overall placements of certain buttons on the body, is in the way during handheld filming or shooting, that could cause one to accidentally turn off the camera while filming. I also watched comparison reviews, showing that the auto-focus on the Z6 isn't as fast as Sony's competing flagship cameras.

I've got to say, I would love to try one of these cameras out!
A few things though that I've noticed from comments and feedback from customers: Firstly: -To me it seems like the technology isn't quite there yet, but not due to lack of ability by the designers to build cameras but more of the abilities to adapt quickly to changing opinions, styles and general thoughts about what technically makes "the best camera". Basically everyone seems to expect different things from their cameras and right now there isn't a whole lot of options in the mirrorless range. I hope that Nikon, Sony and Cannon are enjoying revived interest in mirrorless cameras and we get to see the fruits of their efforts.
For instance, with the Z6 and Z7 there are a few key features with this camera that folks do-not seem to enjoy.
1- The single memory card slot :
Folks see the single slot and immediately classify this camera in the pro-sumer range. For myself this would not be an issue however some folks have become accustom to having that second card available in their workflow for backup and sense of confidence. Alternatively - folks who are new to cameras and stepping up from a cell phone will probably not give this a second thought - however this could be an expensive mistake to jump into cameras and find out it's not for you.
    2-Battery-Life:
Here I think we have Nikon DSLR users who are used to the nice power consumption of a DSLR VS the mirrorless. However I do like how they kept the same battery style so you can use older batteries you may have and charing via USB with the new batteries only I think would mean you could charge this camera from a USB battery bank or car charger or heck solar panel. To me- mobile charing is a big deal. (apparently the old batteries can be used but not charged via USB.
A solution for both problem 1 and 2 would be to release a Z8 with a built in batty grip that houses those 2 card slots and extra battery at the cost of size and expense. Would be best to consult actual pros and ask them what they EXPECT in a pro camera - then toss them a little more bang for the buck.
    3- Flip screen:
For the ones that ask for this - this is always at the top of the list. For myself I'd want a monitor that would un-clip from the camera body like a little stand alone monitor / 4k video recorder unit instead of the little screen to squint at from arms length. However for folks that Vlog or in other words point the camera at themselves they need to see what the camera sees because they are usually a one person operation. If they can't see themselves, they may as well be using a film camera.
There is no perfect flip out screen yet- I think this is what folks are still excited to see. The slide flip out screen can feel strange because you are holding the camera off to one side of your body trying to align. The flip-out screen seems more like a patch to help with overheating issues by keeping the screen elevated and away from the body and less like something that helps you see what you are capturing. The folks who figure out how to make the best flip out screen will be the ones to set the benchmark in displays. (Think outside the box guys!)
    4-cost:
Obviously the biggest issue is the cost. Most folks who haven't gotten into Nikon haven't done so due to the cost of the product and we may see the same trend here. People don't enjoy window shopping for something they want but will never get permission from the wife to purchase (ok maybe projecting here a bit but....) And folks right now are diving to see the progression of the mirrorless cameras. The z6 and z7 are two steps in the right direction and I love that.
    People seem to like:
    A- The grip and feel:
The feel of the camera in the hands. I wouldn't underestimate this aspect as nothing feels worse then fumbling around with a camera that is hard to hold on-to. Haven't had the opportunity to feel it for myself but looks great. A fan of the larger body style.
    B-The image quality
Obviously the thing that gets overlooked the most is the actual output of the camera- from what we can see looks great but haven't seen very much ultra low light or side by side comparisons.
    C- Image stabilizer
Every camera needs this nowadays - I have a feeling that it will be better thing folks are used to .
    D- Sealed for weather
Every camera needs this nowadays but people raving about it!
    E-N-log 10bit output
The folks that know about picture profiles love this but its over the head of folks who don't know what it is.
What do you like or dislike about this camera?

As a GH5S and GH5 video shooter with lots of nikon glass, the Z6 looks pretty good to me. I can record straight to the Atomos and avoid the $$ XQD card, get AF, VR, 10 bit and log. It's not that bad at all.

Just for information, the codec used by Nikon Z6/7 is H264 in a QT wrapper 8bits 4:2:0, wish is an unacceptable format for all BIG MEDIA PRODUCTION companies and TV stations in USA. The only way to get a really broadcast quality is recording externally.

Great preview, I see so many people bashing this camera because of the one slot etc. But this camera with an atomos V is still below $ 3000 and all this can easily fit in a shoulder bag. You would think that having an Imax 70mm camera with 10 bit the size of normal slr and a flash is some kind of moster shoulder only camera. Something that you can hand hold and use as a normal photo camera with its 5 stop IBIS. The Ninja will also give you a ton of exposure/framing/colour(with lut) tool that will put it nearly on par with any traditional shoulder camcorder and people complain. You will also get dual recording for redundancy with it.

  • @Raken531
    @Raken531 6 ปีที่แล้ว

10 bit color is great and all, but it doesn't have a log format, so you end up baking in a lot of stuff so your dynamic range is going to suffer, even if what you do have is a bit more flexible. I also don't see why the big mount is such a big deal. While a f/0.95 is kind of cool, the lens looks monstrous and not very practical. Plus, if you are shooting Sony you already have 3 options for e-mount f/0.95 lenses from third party manufactures.
That being said, I will say Nikon Color Science is pretty spot on. Sony is still working on that stuff. I haven't tried their "latest" that they put into things like the FS5ii but with what I have worked with they take a little bit of finessing to get things like pleasing skin tones.

I'm a Lumix GH5/S user having previously been shooting with Canons and I think this is great news for the market in general, even if you're not buying this camera - Sony and Canon will have to react, the latter in particular given their pathetic excuse for a mirrorless camera (the EOS R). I actually find it odd some people are complaining. Personally, I wish they found a way to get 4K 60 fps or 10-bit internal (or both), but I guess they had to come up short somewhere, right? Otherwise, Nikon would have just put the rest of the mirrorless and DSLR market out of business!
10bit 4K full-frame, with great AF, colour science and low-light performance for less than $3,000 (external monitors & extras), when you consider what else is out there and what people were getting for that money only a few years ago, is insane. I will seriously be torn between this and the new Lumix S1 when we have a better idea of what the final specs of the latter will be and how the new AI-assisted AF will perform.

Thanks for your great balanced preview .
I really like your GH 5 tutorials .
And am so excited about your upcoming Z mount system tutorials .
The point about color science is very valid .
Ultimately the most important technology in shooting is the human mind . People in 1950 s and 1960 s have created films that will challenge any cinematographer even today . Who knows better than you .
The Nikon system is so much more aesthetically pleasing what with its terrific evf , monitor and the general ergonomics , not least weather sealing .
As a professional video film maker can you advise us :
Is it a good idea to buy into the z system for professional video production pipeline for indie feature films & ad films especially low light shooting ?
What s your take on the four main concerns please :
    1. Slow auto focus ?
    2. The fact that Nikon doesn't share it's mount tech with 3rd party lens manufacturers like Sigma Tamron Tikona etc ...so would those f mount lenses perform well on the new adapter ?
    3. Will the new z lenses eco system be extremely expensive ?
Nikon has just announced yesterday that these cameras relese might be delayed for months to address the bad mouthing they got on TH-cam influencers channels on the above issues including battery life .
    What's your final take ?
Wait for Canon Mirrorlress ? Or for the final production version of Nikon Z6 system ?
    Thanks for your kind patience.

  • @mrrolandlawrence

finally. some level headed appraisal. The biggest thing about the new Z series is the mount. Their motive was sharper corners with the larger mount. This is going to be a good design going forwards something that people seemed to have omitted in their reviews. Will be good to see how fast with the wifi AC you can copy files off the camera too if its as fast as using a card reader. Will be one less thing to carry around. My only gripe with the new lens mount is that Nikon have not opened it up to 3rd party developers like sony did. This would help with their lens lineup and the fact nikon only have a finite budget to develop new lenses.

There are additional issues that needs to be addressed about any Video-on-Z6 discussion:
    1. Keep in mind that film making newbies need to accommodate the cost of a brand new computer system to help process all that 4K data.
    2. Still no 4K 60fps. Seems like the only way to get that is Canon C200 or GH5.
    3. Still no 4K Raw Lite, Panny couldn't pull it off with the GH5/GH5s and now Nikon can't pull it off with Z6.
    4. The quality of the image, resolution, frames per second, and the mode when writing to the internal storage does not seem to be very optimized.
    5. You cannot Video AF on a lens like the Nikon S 58mm f/0.95, exactly the sort of lens that badly need Video AF.
    6. Nikon S lenses might not be so great (maybe downright unhelpful) for people who insist on manual focus pulling.
    7. You are introducing a brand new system that other filmmakers and film crew aren't going to be familiar with. Hollywood is adverse to change, they rather use Arri Alexa, which works exactly like their film cameras.
    8. In the cost analysis, don't forget newbie film makers have to pay for things like all kinds of mics, the camera could use a proper matt box, and things like gimbal.
    9. Nikon needs to declare war on Canon C100/C200/C300, Sony FS7, and Fuji MK, and strive to take their video-fu to the next level, only by doing this will they garner the respect they need from video production people.
    10. Canon 6D 2 (also suffering from #onecardgate) has a flip out screen. Vloggers and one-person film crews are wondering a loud why a "fun" "non pro" camera like Z6 does not have a flip out screen.
Unknowns (that would be wonderful if a TH-camr can address it):
    A. Arri Alexa and Canon C200 are cameras that not only do digital RAW, but they have the right "look". Whether it be Arri's reputation for looking like Kodak's film and their camera's ability to replicate the traditional film response when the film has blown highlights or Canon's "just the right amount of sharpness" and highly "cinematic" look and how skintones look great. I think it would be good to pay close attention to Z6's video files to see if it has "the right look", how it is (or isn't) filmic. Both qualitative and quantitative comparison TH-cam videos that directly pit the Z6 against these $30,000 cameras you mentioned in the video would be quite welcome. It would be cool if the comparison review does a side-by-side comparison. Like Alexa/C200/GH5/A7iii on the left pane, Z6 on the right pane.
    B. Can people actually use it in the capacity of a Canon C200? Can video production houses actually make better interviews, make commercials, make micro films, and more. I think it would be great if we started seeing actual films come out and are able to check out their behind-the-scene.
    C. How well can a serious colorist grade Z6 footage? I'd love to see a seasoned industry pro colorist have a crack at Z6 footage. Going back to #1, Tony Northrup feels so strongly about video ability outside of Z6, that yesterday he bent over backwards to mention that GH5 can do 60fps @ 4K: th-cam.com/video/73vBlRjauDI/w-d-xo.html

paradiddlesixix We’ll have to wait on tests, depends on the filter stack on the sensor. Considering the sensors are basically cut from the same cloth, I don’t expect huge performance differences between the two for adapted lenses. Leica M lenses need sensors with no filter stack to perform optimal, like for example film.

My thoughts are they asked to much in comparison to what Sony offers. It is more for the Z7 then the a7r iii and offers less spec wise. The lack of native lenses should also be factored in. They missed out with the battery and one card slot more then anything. The lack of redundancy sucks. Hopefully the battery grip will "fix" that. I think gen one will be good but will need some work. I think gen 2 will be very good. All the potential is in the mount.

    1) While some pro's drool over 10bit and Log, many have said it's just not worth the effort. Definitely not for me, too much work, and to quote Tony Northrup, "our audience doesn't notice the difference".
    2) I never buy Gen 1. Always wait till at least Gen 2 and preferable Gen 3. Look how long it took Panasonic, the GH4 was their 1st great camera. The question is will Nikon ever catch up. The competition isn't sitting still.
    3) I hear ya on price. For $2k and one or two good lenses; you have a really nice package that does low light video. However, the jury is still out on real world performance.

Yes, the the large mount short 16mm flange, opens up possibilities that I'm really excited about.
I have to add the color science can most definitely include Panasonic :)
I can see a possible firmware upgrade allowing 10 bit directly to the in-camera memory, in the near future , being they are 400 MB/S XQD cards.
Also, from what I understand , the Nikon Z6 performs full-pixel readout for full sensor width 4K UHD video recording and does not perform pixel binning or cropping. It reads 6K video and then resamples to 4K output where as the Z7 does not.

I'm a Nikon shooter. Have been for many years. I have my glass investment. Glad Z will adapt to old glass. Smart. With all it's drawbacks, I currently shoot my video on a Nikon D5500 (and I shoot other Nikons for still work.) Small, Reasonably priced, Great color right out of the box and arguably some of the best glass in the world. Ok, Zeiss, Canon and Pentax make some dope glass. I do love the Schneider for large format. I'd try out a Z but why didn't they produce a fully articulating view screen? There are no buttons to the left of the screen so it's reasonable to assume it could be made to swivel out like the D5500. the Z6 would be a very good full frame option for video shooters as well as low light still shooters. A vlogger would struggle somee. Ok, this is a first world problem isn't it? ;)

Totally agree with you about the colour science and especially 10bit (12bit with upcoming raw!) 4k...comparable competition from Sony and Canon just cannot match the quality of the output from the Z6. Concerned it could be a Betamax vs Vhs situation though. In general, people put other factors ahead of image quality when assessing a product. Sure, other factors are important, but if you are serious about your cinematography, don't you wan't the best image quality possible? Also, I like how Nikon has made a mirrorless full frame for the cinematography market. It shows a potential way forward for them when DSLR's eventually die and are fully replaced by mirrorless. (for my money the same goes for bull*** crop sensor anything!)

Still waiting on the Canon FF mirrorless but thanks for digging beneath the surface showing the TRUE value of the camera. BTW - I would wager that there wedding photogs only represent a small portion of an overall market. I'm sure they're significant but I'd love to see the stats. I'm sure Nikon marketers looked at this.

The one and only thing that keeps me from buying the z6 right off the bat is i cannot use it professionally because it only has one card slot, im waiting to find out info on the grip if the grip coming out has a second card slot im all in. If it doesnt I might end up waiting for the next generation and hoping for something better.

GlitchLife it’s XQD. Not SD. Good luck getting an XQD to fail.

To be honest I wasn’t expecting much from Nikon but they really stepped up there game. I’m really happy what they can out with. Can’t wait for Canon’s reaction.

THANK YOU! Finally, someone of credibility is observing the same finer features of the Z6 that I see. Looking forward with excitement to your hands-on tests. Thanks again. (Finger on the order trigger.)

Great video! I’m a Nikon fan boy and shooter but had followed the crowd and dismissed the Zs; your video makes some great points.

What I'm glad about is that Nikon stepping their game up to Sony is that they're both gonna start battling. And that just means more good stuff down the line for the end user.

I own a Canon T5i and for the relatively cheap cost of it, I've been very happy with it as a camera. Canon makes some great glass at affordable prices on the low to mid price points. Nonetheless, I'm very happy that Nikon is taking (relatively) affordable cinema-grade 4K at a price point just above the prosumer models. As a Canon owner, I'm not enthused the Canon M50 has a crazy crop factor. I'd be willing to pay a little bit more for a better Canon 4k camera for vlogging or cinema shooting, but Canon (at least at this point in time) seems interested in protecting their far pricier options. Whether it is Canon, Nikon, Sony or some other brand, I welcome whatever competition we get in this space, as it should hopefully force the other vendors to start innovating more in the mid price tiers, offering more quality for creators at prices that are more affordable for the masses. Is there any way to mount my existing Canon glass with an adapter to a Nikon Z6? That would make it a very compelling option for those of us already heavily invested in Canon lenses. Great video Caleb!
