Thanks for inviting me Mark, great chatting with you! And thanks everybody for the kind comments, glad Mark and I have been able to help so many of you kick more ass on bass!
i started playing bass pretty much new years eve 2022, im having my first ever punk gig in 2 weeks i cant wait. Thank you Josh and Mark for teaching me bass and making me fall in love wioth music and the instrument of bass guitar
I thought you two would have competition, but you do have well developed niches. But both are very clear and concise. Daric Bennett and Dan Hawkins are also really good channels. Glad you gave them mentions.
Josh gave me the kickstart I needed when I started my bass journey last year. Between the two of you, I've progressed so much farther than anticipated. A huge thank you to both of you!
Very pleased to see the two of you chatting. You should play some music together! I found the comments about ego interesting. The very first class I had at my very first camp at Wooten Woods was with Chuck Rainey. The very first thing he said was, “Leave your egos at the door, because that’s where all fear comes from.” And that’s absolutely true.
Started playing bass 10 years ago at age 63. Both of you guys and my "knee-to-knee" lessons with Dave LaRue have me playing daily . Thanks guys! Al in Orlando
The both of you have helped me immensely on my bass journey, which I started 3 years ago (at the young age of 72). Thanks so much for all of your great lessons!
Whoa! I've learned so much from Mark and Josh over the last 10 years, from fiddling in my room alone to playing with my band. It's all thanks to both of their awesome teaching methods. So many light bulb moments learning from these guys!
Thanks, Mark, for another great interview. It's a shame Noob Josh didn't make an appearance😁 Have you considered an interview with Nate Navarro? His book Etudes, Riffs, Songs & Exercises was my starting point, prior to taking Bassic Fundamentals. Looking forward to your two books.
My favorite teachers. I went with Josh's Beginner to Badass course and then found Mark's channel and lessons. Been pretty set so far in my bass journey. :)
My two favourite online teachers. No ego, no point-scoring, just two bloody decent guys having a really interesting chat. I've bought just about all of both of your courses, now. Thanks both.
Love Dan so much. But this conversation definitely got it right. Seeing things from multiple teachers points of view is a great way to learn from all the angles
Got me back to playing for the first time in 20 years! Discovered Mark teaching how to play Joy Division and Iron Maiden, which led me to finding Josh and his awesome instructional videos. True gems 💎Thanks guys!
You are correct! Once you get into bass it becomes exciting and we want to go on and on and share it with others. I am a beginner late in life... 5 months in with my 1st bass ... and I get very excited every time I either pick up a bass, hear a bass, or someone talks about bass. I watch and enjoy BOTH, TalkingBass and BassBuzz, videos! Great inspiration.
The way I found Josh was looking for a tapping riff by Billy Sheehan, he played “Don’t stop believing” solo, tapping, and I found this video of a kid playing it, and I became a fan right away. And Mark… man, we added a cover of “footloose” in our band’s playlist, and without Marks’s lessons, I don’t know how would I”d been able to pull it off. You guys rule!
My answer to the question of "How did you go from Metallica to jazzy stuff" would have been: Sting. But also - In roughly 2020, I decided to get serious about bass and so... about two years ago, I found a guy called Josh Fossgreen and I never looked back. Now I know way more than just Metallica, Iron Maiden, and SOAD. Thanks, Josh! :) Great interview, Mark! Loved hearing my two online teachers talk about music.
These are the two Bass Teachers that really jump-started my playing. Even as someone who is totally blind, I can still follow there instructions. Granted I would have a few minor tweaks from my friends here and there. But other then that, even they said I was 90% spot on with certain aspects of playing bass. But also learning to appreciate different styles of music even though I may not have liked certain types in the past. #JobWellDun
So glad to see 2 of the top bass educators together. Epic to hear those two voices in the same video. Beautiful to hear about the camaraderie among the TH-cam bass teachers, including Scott Devine. And awesome to hear that Josh took an SBL course.
Well that was a pleasant half hour, watching my two favorite bass teachers chatting. You both have helped me quite a lot, in different ways. I'm finally getting serious about learning now that I have more free time. I'll be 80 this year, but I don't think I'm too old to learn. Thanks, Mark and Josh.
Nah mark and josh have helped me so freaking much this is crazy there's a reason why I'm so good right now and it's cuz of you two, thank u so much for everything and I'll be getting better
I follow you both among others but what makes TalkingBass special (besides his excellent videos) is Mark bringing other bass players and interviewing them. I got to know other bassists I never knew before. You guys are awesome in sharing your knowledge. Thank you!
The great thing about BB videos is he gets you actually playing even if it's only one or two open notes, but you're playing with a song and practising technique and rhythm and tone even at that level. The opposite of the piano teacher that told me he'd prefer people play just scales and technique for the first entire year. Screw that. I started with Bach - joy!
I’m using Josh’s excellent Beginner to Badass course and what I like about the package is I can take a break and not worry about a subscription expiring. Mark is an excellent teacher and I share a lot of his videos to a Facebook group I set up. So I can reference it. There’s so much to learn and bass is a big deal. It’s truly excellent to have these marvellous teachers.
I'm a new bass player, and Josh's Beginner to Badass course is fantastic for teaching the absolute beginner stuff, and gradually working up confidence. His lessons actually made me want to learn more about music theory and I am now I'm working through the Scales Essentials Course over at Talking Bass. You two are both excellent teachers, and have made learning bass a truly enjoyable.
The thing I love about you guys the most is that you inspire confidence, by being patient and making one feel that they can learn this wonderful instrument and not feel inferior or maybe not smart enough.
Great to see you two sharing your experiences. Once again, as a BassBuzz Student and TalkingBass frequent visitor my comments are THANK YOU and one I have mentioned before: Please give us a real and good guide to practice bass (from beginner to intermediate). It's something I believe the community would really appreciate. Something that tells us as simplified as possible "Start by... and add systematically... but don't forget... kind of guide. Something that keeps us away from noodelling because we don't really know how to efficiently practice. Cheers!
Mark, I appreciated your honest review a while back of the top bass related TH-cam channels. It’s nice to see bass players that have the humility to acknowledge great players or teachers or creators. Thanks! Josh is one of the most watchable and entertaining as well as being a legit instructor.
I like all three of the bass channels mentioned (Talking Bass, Scott Devine's, and most recently, Josh's BassBuzz). I also like the late Jim Stennett's Real Bass Lessons.
Completely agreed with UM-Li, both have been getting me into a new level in bass playing . Now I am taking a couple of courses with Mark but so so many tips and foundation came from Josh's site as well so I am so glad to see these two giants of bass education chatting together, Very happy to listen this.
I have Josh's course. I never would have believed it was easy to learn music theory. His method of teaching is really awesome. A touch humor to keep things interesting and he plays along with keeping things simple "on your current" level. Never overly complicated. Been taking my time but I'm on the eight module learning my first scale and triad. On the side I'm half way through learning The Warning's song "Z" bassline. Using Josh's method it has been easy to do. Love the way Josh is always so laid back makes you feel at ease while learning and one of the few teachers who will actually answer questions when you're stuck. Great interview.
I was playing drums, when I took Josh's course. After taking the course I was in love with the bass and continued taking on- line courses. Last summer I went to a drum camp, came home and tripled down the bass, Thank You Josh and Mark for all you do for us budding bassist!
So good to see the two of you together. You are my two favorite bass teachers. At 62 I'm probably your oldest student. I grew up playing piano and guitar and took flute in high school. I've always loved the bass though so in my retirement I'm learning the bass
I’m halfway through my second run through the Bass Buzz course and I literally get better everytime I pick up my bass, it’s been a total game changer for me! Heath-Oregon
you guys (& scott) got me back into playing bass. you saved me a whole lot of heartache after my youngest son died. I'm sorry i'm such a cheapskate that I have not subscribed to any paid content yet.
It's so good and refreshing to see such a good and very friendly coexistence of really good teachers. Can't emphasize enough your value to the whole community of bass players around the world ❤
Hi, you guys are great. Josh, I am doing the Beginners To Bad Ass (from near Malaga Spain). I'm doing it in bit size chunks, I'm going out there and playing parts that i learn so that I don't forget it. When I'm not sure I go back and repeat the Module, this is so great. I'm on Module 10 , I am taking my time so that I fully understand everything before I move on. I've been learning for 23 months(in the beginning Oct 2021 with a Spanish music teacher didn't help that I couldn't speak Spanish), loving it. I use your TH-cam videos more than ever now as the questions I come up against as a beginner you have done a video on it. Love your humour. I now do my lessons on the beach as it has now got cooler out here and people/tourist sit, listen and video me, this is so great, I also go to jamming session in bars using everything that you have taught me. Thank you so much for keeping me going.
I'm new to bass and have surfed the net for relatable, solid content. Gravitated to both of you guys and happy to support you both. Thanks for all you do!! It helps so much & keep it up!!
I've been playing since 1998. I took a 10 year hiatus from playing bass after playing throughout high-school, and several years after with a semi professional local swing band... I got bored... and it left a huge hole in my life. I tried learning about chords from guitarists and pianists in an attempt to bring back my motivation to play, but for all their knowledge of chords, they seemed to lack the ability to explain things in a monophonic manor. What a great idea! Can we please also have the reverse? I'd like to see Mark interviewed on Josh's channel. Both of you are extraordinary communicators, brilliant entrepreneurs and excellent bassists. Both of you have interesting personalities and I'd like to see more biography. I learn from both channels and I'm so happy to see you both pow-wow. Deep Gratitude for both of you!❤️👏👏👏👏🙏🏼
NIce to see my two bass teachers getting on so well. i subscrobe to both your channels and always find new stuff to kearn. Plus if i dont grasp a subject fully one way i can try it the other, Thanks guys from this part time hobby bassist. P.s i only just found this vid as my job takes me away 4 months at a time.
You two guys are a couple of my favorite bass instructors I can't learn enough and just enjoy doing so from you cats you guys make the bass fun and challenging its so cool that you guy teach funk and rock which I like learning thank you so much☺
Great interview Josh & Mark. I have purchased and completed the B2B course and have moved onto Mark’s scales course. I agree with everything you’ve mentioned in the interview with regards to progression for bass players. Learnt so much from both of you👍😎 Cheers Brian Little, Melbourne Australia
I knew from the get that I wanted to play metal bass. When I finally started to develope my own taste, not just what my parents listened to, it was the early 2000s. Korn, SoAD, Rammstein, Kittie, Mudvayne, Coal Chamber, slipknot, metallica, Flaw (especially flaw!) And noticed that aside from the genre relation, I very much was drawn to heavy, front line bass lines. And breakdowns. Starting around the same time you did, early teen years, desperate to be my own me. I've since branched into alot of other genres, just for the bass. Bluegrass, classical, Cinematic, dubstep, rap, jazz, country. There's good in all of it. But I always come back to metal.
Yay! Great to see my 2 favorite bass instructors!! How oddly coincidental to see both of you together. You both are the best at what you do! After listening to this recording and appreciating how humble you both are, I felt compelled to share a thought. It's not just how you are connecting with like minded people, it's that you are both fantastic teachers. Your elemental approach (not elementary) is so important to many of us, especially those of us that haven't had formal music education, or theory.
Thank you so much for this! I agree with the others: you two are really the best. I just started the Beginning to Badass Course after having followed Josh videos for a while when having private lessons in person. Now I moved to a new city and the course is helping me a lot to keep improving and solidify knowledge. In general I think TH-camr Musicians like you are really precious: Bass is amazing and so soothing
It will be nice if you can include some Latin Music content/lessons/tutorials (different than Bossa Nova) in your TH-cam channels. Congrats for you content and keep up the great job!!!
I'm really a beginner but consider myself a part of the bass community. When you meet Dan Hawkins, I want to be in on it too. Listening to you brothers is an inspiration. Thankyou Mark.
Great video. Great chat. Between you 2 guys and Dale Titus from the channel everything bass and Dana b goods page have got me slapping away. Learned so much. Alex sklarevskis bass video from the 80s is great too. Thanks very much.
Two fantastic bass player/teachers. You both seem really humble about your ability and what you're capable of, a pleasant change from the egotistical clowns that constantly show off. One of the bigger problems that may occur in the future is copyright infringement, TH-cam and/or the music industry may prevent any use of songs at all, including just a few seconds.
Funny, as a drummer i started with classic rock, then got into jazz. I actually got my Dad into jazz, as we both grew up with 60s, 70s, 80's rock music, but i'm 30 and my dad is 59
Really fantastic interview from 2 of my favorite teachers. Thanks for sharing this Mark, and as you said no ego involved with either of you. You both have something to offer and as Josh said, many of us here on TH-cam follow several teachers. Besides the two of you, I also follow Luke from Become A Bassist. I love Josh's humor and presentation. He's really great with beginners and has a fantastic delivery. Great to see you both talking and sharing your experiences. Cheers!
I don’t need any of basic lesson or theory courses, but I enjoy some of the videos from both of you guys (and SBL) anyway. 😉 I thank you for that. 👨🏻. 🥂
Thanks for inviting me Mark, great chatting with you! And thanks everybody for the kind comments, glad Mark and I have been able to help so many of you kick more ass on bass!
Josh! Whoo!
i started playing bass pretty much new years eve 2022, im having my first ever punk gig in 2 weeks i cant wait. Thank you Josh and Mark for teaching me bass and making me fall in love wioth music and the instrument of bass guitar
Josh i just finished my first gig, i snuk in an NIB mini solo crowd went wild im in love with live music now ❤️
Noob josh interview please..
I thought you two would have competition, but you do have well developed niches. But both are very clear and concise.
Daric Bennett and Dan Hawkins are also really good channels. Glad you gave them mentions.
You are the two bass teachers on TH-cam who've helped me absolutely the most. Huge thanks to both of you!
Same here, my two favorite channels that helped me learn to play
Same same. You both are amazing!
I'm another one in the "same here" choir.
My top two teachers! Cool!
It’s funny because I agree 100%, I did Joss’s course and a sight reading course by Mark, go back through both courses regularly!
Same!
Josh's bass channel is so much fun, even for someone like me who's played bass since 1975.
Ah yes literally my two favourite TH-cam educators - complete lack of ego and fantastic knowledge & communication from you both 🙌👊
Josh gave me the kickstart I needed when I started my bass journey last year.
Rainey is a spot on bassist and full of wisdom. Love his story with how he recorded Peg with Steely Dan.
Started playing bass 10 years ago at age 63. Both of you guys and my "knee-to-knee" lessons with Dave LaRue have me playing daily . Thanks guys! Al in Orlando
Mark please interview Dave, he is such a great player.
Dave La Rue? Wow!
Looking forward to this. My two favourites bass brothers on YT. 👍🍺
The both of you have helped me immensely on my bass journey, which I started 3 years ago (at the young age of 72). Thanks so much for all of your great lessons!
It's never too late!
Whoa! I've learned so much from Mark and Josh over the last 10 years, from fiddling in my room alone to playing with my band. It's all thanks to both of their awesome teaching methods. So many light bulb moments learning from these guys!
Thanks, Mark, for another great interview.
It's a shame Noob Josh didn't make an appearance😁
Have you considered an interview with Nate Navarro? His book Etudes, Riffs, Songs & Exercises was my starting point, prior to taking Bassic Fundamentals.
Looking forward to your two books.
My favorite teachers. I went with Josh's Beginner to Badass course and then found Mark's channel and lessons. Been pretty set so far in my bass journey. :)
My two favourite online teachers. No ego, no point-scoring, just two bloody decent guys having a really interesting chat. I've bought just about all of both of your courses, now. Thanks both.
These two guys are amazing teachers and also a nod to Dan Hawkins who has another style of teaching that I really enjoy.
Love Dan so much. But this conversation definitely got it right. Seeing things from multiple teachers points of view is a great way to learn from all the angles
He's really good too.
Josh is HUGE, such a great communicator teacher and bass player. Great feat!
Got me back to playing for the first time in 20 years! Discovered Mark teaching how to play Joy Division and Iron Maiden, which led me to finding Josh and his awesome instructional videos. True gems 💎Thanks guys!
Really wish Mark continued publishing the podcasts to Spotify. The format works best for me when I’m on walks.

Much appreciated hearing you both together. Many thanks for all the great content!
He was my first instructor on TH-cam and subsequently I bought the Beginner to Badass program. Only 3 months in but Hooked !
My answer to the question of "How did you go from Metallica to jazzy stuff" would have been:
Sting.
But also - In roughly 2020, I decided to get serious about bass and so... about two years ago, I found a guy called Josh Fossgreen and I never looked back. Between the two of you, I owe all my progress to your great teaching styles!

Great to see you two sharing your experiences. Only just found this! And been with both of you guys since 2020. You two are the only two I used courses from to start me off in bass (and still do)
Fantastic interview. Thanks both of you. Blessed be.
I’m halfway through my second run through the Bass Buzz course and I literally get better everytime I pick up my bass, it’s been a total game changer for me! Heath-Oregon
you guys (& scott) got me back into playing bass. you saved me a whole lot of heartache after my youngest son died. I'm sorry i'm such a cheapskate that I have not subscribed to any paid content yet.
nice to listen to those so talented bassplayers. have learned a lot from both of you guys. thanks for that.
I religiously watch both of you and SBL. The community is smaller than you think. Thank you for everything
Same here, my 2 favorite bass teachers!
It's so good and refreshing to see such a good and very friendly coexistence of really good teachers. Can't emphasize enough your value to the whole community of bass players around the world ❤
That was cool. Thanks guys. Both of you are a big help to me 👍
Hi, you guys are great. You both are the only bass players who's lessons i can truly understand. Thanks guys.
Great to Hear Two Great Bass Teachers talking with each other with Professional attitudes.
Two teaching GOATs right here.
Watching and learning from you guys, SBL, and Rich Brownstone has REALLY got me motivated to play again.
If you want to learn to play bass, find you a bass player 😉
What a great idea! Can we please also have the reverse? I'd like to see Mark interviewed on Josh's channel. Both of you are extraordinary communicators, brilliant entrepreneurs and excellent bassists. Both of you have interesting personalities and I'd like to see more biography. I learn from both channels and I'm so happy to see you both pow-wow. Deep Gratitude for both of you!❤️👏👏👏👏🙏🏼
You guys are great! Also some props to Scott Devine over at SBL. All three are great and I look to all three to continue my bass journey! Cheers!
My two favorites on youtube!! Thank you so much guys, i legit learnt all from you!
Love Josh from before he started BassBuzz, learned so much from him.
You two guys are a couple of my favorite bass instructors I can't learn enough and just enjoy doing so from you cats you guys make the bass fun and challenging its so cool that you guy teach funk and rock which I like learning thank you so much☺
I love every video both you nice gentlemen have so graciously shared with us new to bass folk! Love & gratitude, hp
This was such a treat, I love both of your content.
Great interview Josh & Mark.
I have purchased and completed the B2B course and have moved onto Mark’s scales course.
I agree with everything you’ve mentioned in the interview with regards to progression for bass players.
Learnt so much from both of you👍😎
Cheers Brian Little, Melbourne Australia
I fit the mold having started with Gosh and now taking some courses on Talking bass.
Enjoy both of these instructors!
Two great teachers that I've learned alot from! Thanks guys keep up the good work!
2 of my fave Bass brothers . Love both your channels. Keep it going fellas!!!

In general I think TH-camr Musicians like you are really precious: Bass is amazing and so soothing
It will be nice if you can include some Latin Music content/lessons/tutorials (different than Bossa Nova) in your TH-cam channels. Congrats for you content and keep up the great job!!!
My 2 favourite guys! 🎸 ❤
Both of you are my inspiration. Thanks for everything you do Bass and please, continue..
I'm really a beginner but consider myself a part of the bass community. When you meet Dan Hawkins, I want to be in on it too.
Listening to you brothers is an inspiration. Thankyou Mark.
Great to see you guys together in a video I subscribe to you both just wanted to say thanks your great Teachers
Great video. Great chat. Between you 2 guys and Dale Titus from the channel everything bass and Dana b goods page have got me slapping away. Learned so much. Alex sklarevskis bass video from the 80s is great too. Thanks very much.
Cool interview! Thanks
Two fantastic bass player/teachers. You both seem really humble about your ability and what you're capable of, a pleasant change from the egotistical clowns that constantly show off. One of the bigger problems that may occur in the future is copyright infringement, TH-cam and/or the music industry may prevent any use of songs at all, including just a few seconds.
two of the best bass teacher out there
I gotta watch this!!!! Both yall...
I have been following both of you😅for a few years
Funny, as a drummer i started with classic rock, then got into jazz. I actually got my Dad into jazz, as we both grew up with 60s, 70s, 80's rock music, but i'm 30 and my dad is 59
Learning so much from both of your courses. Great to see you chatting together
Cheers!
I got you both on my other youtube account and also Scott Bass Lessons ( sorry for the ad) but you 3 are awesome ❤🎉
I literally have watched you both since I was 13 (im 22 now) this is amazing collab
Thank you both for what you do. Great educators on the subject.
You guys are both excellent and entertaining instructors!! Thank you for all you do!!
I don’t need any of basic lesson or theory courses, but I enjoy some of the videos from both of you guys (and SBL) anyway. 😉
I thank you for that. 👨🏻. 🥂
Love both of you guys. Been enjoying your content for years. Keep up the great work!
Hi Mark and Josh.
Benn of Bellingham ( Washington, USA )
I thought I felt a tremor in the “Bass Force”!!!!🎸🤘🔥
I learn a lot from both of you...thanks.
If these two fellas are not the two best bass teachers of YT then I’m not Napoleon.
Que gran canal, que grandes bajistas!!
