- On Christmas Day 1988, the Royal Family came together for their traditional Christmas service at St Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh were joined by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother; Prince Charles, Prince of Wales; Princess Anne, Princess Royal; Prince Andrew, Duke of York; and Prince Edward. Also present were Diana, Princess of Wales; Sarah, Duchess of York; Prince Edward, Duke of Kent; Katharine, Duchess of Kent; Angus Ogilvy; Princess Alexandra, the Honourable Lady Ogilvy, and royal grandchildren Prince William and Zara Phillips.

The Queen was always the star of the show. People swarmed to bring her flowers even with the Queen Mother, Diana, and Fergie next to her. I like King Charles but it is still a bit odd to accept that Elizabeth II no longer runs the monarchy.
Diana emanating that elegance and beauty as she always do it. I really wish, she was still here with us.

I disagree. Diana didn't look anything spectacular. I felt Sarah, Duchess of York looked better than Diana. And Princess Anne and Princess Michael of Kent was stunning. She stood out as the elegant one of all of them.

Amazing to compare to the 2023 video! Zara and William are all grown up and their own kids playing, I love it. And what a visual now, seeing the distance between Charles and Diana. They steered pretty clear of each other for most of this video.

Four generations here, the great grandmother, grandparents, grandaunts, granduncles, parents, first cousins, second cousins. And now the fourth generations have their own children and are about the same age (or older) as their parents were.

Thank you for the video. It was beautiful to see the Queen and her family in 1988. The comparison of this video with today's video tells a different story. Today and every video that I see has the Prince and Princess of Wales always walking together with their children looking like they enjoy each other's company. In this video, Diana and Charles don't ever interact, she going one way and he lagging behind, with William walking with whomever. Kinda sad.
I don't find it sad at all. Just different styles.
William was mingling with his cousin Zara, having a lot of fun. Peter was quite tall for a young guy then. I noticed Harry wasn't there, he must have been too young to sit still that long throughout the Service. It looked like William was possibly 8 which means Harry was about 6. Diana didn't seem to be interested in talking to any one actually, with only a bit of chatting with Sarah. I was surprised that none of them went walking afterwards, like they do now, to greet everyone. At least there was a lot of kisses and hugs. I noticed that everyone that approached the Queen Mom, (Queen Elizabeth II's mother) all did a bow of the head and kissed the top of her hand. She put her hand up and out for each person, even the kids. I've never seen the actual Queen (as in Q. Elizabeth II) do that

Gosh brings one goosebumps to see then and how things turned out all those who slowly where not going to be around to the latest The Queen the end of an era. The break up of a family that is certainly the saddest thing and on such days especially with what is going on in the world the only thing left is family.
The Royal Family and the Church of Henry VIII could become free. JOHN 8: 31 "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
This was the year after I graduated high school. 10 points to anyone who can name everyone there!
Back when this was filmed the Royal Family was more formal and rigid with the public than they are today. I'm sure there are good and bad points to this. Today they seem more relatable, approachable, and open to the public. More noticeable today as then is with the present-day Duke of Edinburgh (Prince Edward), he still is somewhat reserved or somewhat standoffish.
Princess Anne hit like 40 and then never aged after that

I remember those things that Zara has around her neck. I had one but I can't remember what they're called. Diana is totally ignoring Charles but we all know how that went. The ladies all have their English hats on like they should. Princess Anne is probably going to walk over & tell everyone that the flowers are ridiculous. The Queen Mother looks a little "tipsy" but it's Christmas & she loved her gin. The Queen is making sure her family is doing everything their supposed to be doing & may that lady rest in peace. When someone passes who is so well loved, especially when it happens in such a horrible dramatic way, we tend to make saints out of them. In our personal lives and also when it comes to public figures. I think it’s important to understand no human being is perfect and they don’t have to be. They can be imperfect and we can still love them. But in this case I feel it is time to stop the blame game. It’s not helping anybody. And in the case of public figures, we think we know them because we’ve seen them. But we don’t really know them and we do not know the two dynamics of their relationships. This is why I made this comment.

And they both started seeing other people in 1986, so they were only married on paper at this point. Hence they were ignoring each other.

@@kikitcat5 Because Diana got her share of plaudits. And the tabloids should have promoted an healthier looking figure , to set an example to us. ( at the time) Young schoolgirls who would skip meals or worse to be Diana stick thin. In hindsight we should have aspired to Sarah's healthier looking size.

Diana was the wife of a king and mother of the future king and she was perfect in the role, she eclipsed them all including the queen and everyone was aware of it
I think they wanted her to. It made it a lot easier on the entire family. Somebody has to be the star & Diana was perfect for the role. That's probably why they chose her.

No Diana was NOT perfect for the role as the wife of the future King because she chose to make it all about herself. She wanted the attention, craved the attention, much like Meghan actually. The main difference is Diana cid actually care and respect the Monarchy and worked. Out of all of the women that married into the family, the only ones who do far, would have been (and or are) suited to being a wife to a future King is - Sophie. Catherine. Camilla - because all three women believe in Service and do not try to make it about themselves. They don't compete for attention from the public at the expense of their husbands. They have mutual respect for their husbands.
Diana didn't want a divorce at all, she would have gone to the end, she warned the royal house in 1992 but she would have gone to the end, how would you feel if you were a beautiful, most famous woman in the world betrayed?
