- I headed north today to get 2 steam hauled rail tours over shap within 19 minutes of each other. The first was Vintagetrains’ ‘The Shap Mountaineer’ from Birmingham New Street to Carlisle and return. The second was the Railway Touring Company’s ‘Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express with 34067 Tangmere.
An early start was needed to meet up with @crunchynutsteamfilms5043 and @harnettyrailways to get to Shap Wells to film GWR 5043 ‘Earl of Mount Edgcumbe’ going solo over Shap. Starting in Birmingham New Street 47773 would work the train as far as Carnforth with 1Z43 where the Castle would take over for the climb up Shap, and on to Carlisle. The tour lost time at Preston due to a reported medical emergency on board, leaving Carnforth 47 late.
The 47 was looped at Grayrig and followed the Castle up Shap.
Just under 20 minutes later we were treated to the sight of the second Steam tour, The Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express from London Euston to Carlisle. A class 86 would work the train as far as Carnforth where SR Bulleid Pacific 34067 Tangmere would take over for the run up shap and the S&C with Diesel assistance.
With 5043 being a rare visitor to the north the main focus was on filming that so the return shots were filmed at Penrith where the Castle came screaming through at speed and Lancaster. Thanks Dan for the help with the second camera at Penrith. Was good to see @thrailwayvideos5393 @themodster @danielstrainsukofficial9133 @FullSteamAhead @doctordave12 e
