The Gateway Arch is more than a cultural divide. Pioneers heading west to settle in less crowded areas than in the East, gathered in St. Louis to join wagon trains and gather supplies for the journey. They followed various trails depending on their destination, the most famous being the Oregon Trail. The fact that the journeys started in St. Louis, the city became known as "The Gateway to the West". That's why the arch is "The Gateway Arch".
I'm taking out the Hollywood sign and putting in the Grand Canyon
Yes!! 💯
Hell yeah or could have been THE WORLD TRADE CENTER
OLE NEW YORK CITY skyline
Almost everyone in the world equates the Hollywood sign with American cinema and entertainment, both of which are experienced by people worldwide every day. Of course, it is very recognizable everywhere. The Grand Canyon isn’t a symbol of the United States - it’s a dramatic geological feature. Many people wouldn’t recognize it like Americans do.
Idk that's more of a natural thing. Not really a symbol imo.
The movie you saw cowboys passing gas is "Blazing Saddles".
It is a must see American classic by Mel Brooks, who himself is an American classic.
Just to clarify, while Gutzon Borglum was the sculptor who designed and supervised the work on Mt. Rushmore, there were nearly 400 people who worked on sculpting the faces. The video made it sound as if Borglum and his son did it all. One of the sculptors was Korczak Ziolkowski, who went on to design and start the sculpting on Crazy Horse, which is ongoing.
The NY Yankees are a symbol of America, not because other countries actually know and follow the baseball team, but because people in other countries often wear a baseball hat with the Yankees logo as a status symbol. And I say this as a Red Sox fan, their hated rival haha.
Whew, I’m a RedSox fan also and that made this comment easier to read.
@@hughfuller8416 It pains me a little to have to admit the Yankees are a symbol of the US, but for educational purposes I guess it has to be done.
I would like to point out that it is Only name recognition. Americans have been known as Yankees around the world as early as 1758. Over a century before the Yankees were even thought of. This proves true during WWI where Americans were called Yanks. As a, Glutton for punishment, Mets fan I refuse to accept their conclusions, and will substitute it with my own reality. Isn't that how things work now a days?
@@CPny65 You’re right on the origin of the term Yankees, and I myself refused to be called a Yankee by one-time southern girlfriend. But for people that wear the hat in other countries, it’s nothing but the symbol that represents America to them. Most would probably never know of the origin of Yankees, baseball or otherwise.
@@CPny65 another great point.
It's the Saint Louis Arch. You take an elevator up to the top, and you can walk through the arch, and look at the view.
Went there many years ago and I loved it!! ❤️🇺🇸❤️
@@russellfisher2853 St. Louis was called the Gateway to the West. That title was symbolized by the Gateway Arch.
The arch was the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri. It is a National Park. It commemorates the westward expansion that occurred from colonial times to present. It is over 500 feet high and has an elevator that will (for a fee) take you to the top to look out some windows.
I've been in the Gateway Arch and the elevators are very unique that bring people up and down both sides of the Arch.
Yes, they are!
The Gareway Arch is in St. Louis, Missouri. It is 630 feet tall making it th tallest monument in the USA. IT IS NOW part of the National Park System. I live forty miles from there and have been to the top several times. It is A beautiful view.
The gateway arch. It’s in St. Louis. It symbolizes the cultural divide between east US and west US. built in 1965. It’s quite an achievement to build something like that.
When I was just a little kid, parts of the arch were constructed down the street from my house. I remember pieces of it going by on flatbed trucks.
One of the things that the US and Great Britain have in common is a highly recognizable flag. Other than some of the big countries, those people wouldn't recognize most countries flags.
The Gateway Arch is in St. Louis (Missouri). It reflects St. Louis' role in the Westward Expansion of the United States during the nineteenth century.
The movie "The Rock" was just a fictional action thriller but "Escape from Alcatraz" is based on an actual event where prisoners escaped in 1962. Alcatraz was actually closed shortly after the events upon which this movie is based.
The Gateway Arch is in Saint Louis Missouri.
That song is Aaron Tipton " Where the Stars and Stripes, and the Eagle Flys" it came out several days after 911
ROCK FLAG AND EAGLE !!!!
The clip of the Hollywood sign getting demolished, is from the movie "The Day After Tomorrow". Great movie!
The Liberty Bell should be on the list not just an also ran.
Technically the Statue of Liberty in New Jersey if you don't believe me Google itThe Statue is 305 feet tall. Lady Liberty's feet are 879 feet long. On 10/8/1886, President Grover Cleveland presided over the opening ceremony. The Statue is technically in New Jersey waters, but she is legally part of New York.Mar 6, 2024
St. Louis is also known for barbecue.
Yeah pretty much all of Missouri is.
And toasted ravioli...yummy
@@maryvickery90 you forgot the goey butter cake.
Full House was a tv show & a classic !!
The Arch is in Missouri
I'm sorry, but watch mojo is wrong on Mount Rushmore. It was never completed as it was originally supposed to include part of the men's chest, as a bust would include.
The only thing I know off the top of my head about the Gateway Arch is that it is next to the Mississippi River.
The gateway arch is in St. Louis Missouri
The insertion of old movie and tv scenes was a bad decision. Most of them will only be recognized by Americans of a certain age (me).
Blazing Saddles is a terrible inclusion. When it came out I laughed at it but I was an ignorant teenager. I watched a few years ago and was shocked at the racial slurs, I think it should be stored away like Song of the South.
The St. Louis Arch or Gateway Arch is in St. Louis Missouri. It's part of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial which commemorates the expansion of the US by way of the lands acquired in the Louisiana Purchase. The purchase of the land from the French king was brought to the United States by way of Thomas Jefferson making an executive decision to use implied powers granted to the president in the US Constitution and eventually confirmed by Congress.
The st.louis arc in st. Louis Missouri is also known as the gateway to the west
Lee Greenwood and the guy singing that song and yes, you should check it out💯
Good list, but the American Cowboy did not exist at the time of the Alamo battle, it’s about 50 years off.
8:26 Just one quibble. The idea that the image of the cowboy is "inextricably linked with the Alamo" is incorrect. True, the Alamo is located in Texas, where the cowboy culture is strong. But the battle of the Alamo was in 1836, and what we know as the Old West cowboy only existed for about thirty years, from roughly 1870-1900.
For many of us Americans seeing some of these things makes us swell with emotion. We may not say it aloud but it fills us with a feeling of pride, gratitude and a host of many emotions. Bald Eagles are not common but I am lucky enough to live in a state where they do live. I can tell you from personal experience seeing bald eagles breed is an incredibly dramatic event. They are huge birds, it's surprising to see their wing span.
The bridge is famous because it’s in California. The Mackinac bridge in Michigan is much bigger and way more impressive. Better built as well
It did not go beyond my notice that the opening of the video featured the Mt. Rushmore scene from the film "North by Northwest", which was produced and directed by the famous BRITISH filmmaker, Alfred Hitchcock.
9:08 the Uncle Sam recruitment poster actually is based on the Lord Kitchener recruitment poster from the U.K. from WWI.
Millie loves her Terry Black’s
Blazing Saddles, lol. Neither James nor Millie had any idea of what to say.
The yankees one i find funny cause the whole world wears NY Yankees caps and 99 percent of them don't even know they are Yankees caps xD
*Also replace California sign with NASA. A true American symbol of advancement, ingenuity, and is highly respected worldwide.
more like 99.999%
@@hifijohnAgreed. I think in Europe they are just called New York hats
you could do a tour of the northwest, mt rushmore, yellowstone, the badlands, goto washington and see mt. st. helens and mt. ranier
Beesleys, it appears that you didn't understand the cowboy in black shooting the guns out of the hands of the group. The joke is that he shot the guns out of the hands of all of them before, and had his gun back in its holster before even 1 could get a shot off--impossibly fast to the point of funny. This was a scene from a weird comedy movie, Blazing Saddles, which featured again at around 8:15.
"Full House" was a cute family sitcom of a single dad and his big group of children which ran from '87--'95 (Golden Gate section).
I don't know if I could answer the question of whether the Yankees are an American symbol. You could answer it better. Are they?
Re. Mt. Rushmore's 1300 acres = 2 sq.mi./5.18 sq. km.
She got it wrong about the Alamo, in that most weren't cowboys, but patriots and military leaders.
At around 9:35 was a cartoon character of decades past--Mr. Magoo.
Personally, Family Guy isn't worthy of being called a cartoon, since my view of that term is Bugs Bunny, but that's just plain profane. I'm ashamed to acknowledge that show as American made.
Obviously, bald eagles aren't bald. The term originated in the days when somebody with white hair was referred to as bald.
Before #1 was revealed, the arch is St. Louis' Gateway Arch, which was recently upgraded to our newest national park. Before that, I believe it was a national monument.
Aaron Tippin where the Stars and Stripes and the Eagle fly 16 years ago video
I proposed to my Brit wife in the top of the St Louis Arch. I think she said yes so she could get down.
This is the poem on the Statue of Liberty
The New Colossus
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
Emma Lazarus
November 2, 1883
The Hollywood sign 🙄
The Liberty Bell is in Philadelphia Pennsylvania the arch is in St. Louis Missouri
Historians have always been skeptical that Betsy Ross designed the American flag. However, on Christmas night of 1776 George Washington led his army across the Delaware river and surprised a garrison of Hessian soldiers in Trenton NJ, serving King George III. He won the battle and probably saved the American revolution, because it was in a desperate situation at that time. The garrison at Trenton had asked for reinforcements before then and a Colonel Donop was on on his way there with a regiment to reinforce the garrison at Trenton. However, Donop was known to be a lady's man and when his regiment moved through Mt. Holly NJ there was a young widow who was conspicuously present. Most of the other young ladies left town because of many reports of rape. Colonel Donop spent three nights with this young widow (Christmas Eve, Christmas Night, and the night after Christmas) delaying the movement of his regiment. If Donop had not been delayed he might have prevented Washington from winning the battle of Trenton, which might have ended the American revolutionary war. There is no proof as to who this young widow was but there are some clews in letters found in Germany some years ago by colonel Donop. The best fit to the data is Betsy Ross. Betsy was a patriot and was known to the founding fathers of the U.S. including George Washington. If this is true she was far more important to the American revolution than anyone ever realized.
The French did pay for the Statue of Liberty… but the USA had to raise the funds & pay for the required pedestal. It took years & lots of arguing to accomplish.. But many didn’t want the statue. They felt the symbol of Liberty was too limiting. (Just some trivia)
The Dodgers are from Brooklyn, NY.
Originally…Brooklyn
I was a Dodger fan before they relocated to So California, and attended several games after they moved!!
@@corinnepmorrison1854 Teams shouldn't move. I still call the Dodgers "Brooklyn." The Giants are "New York Giants." Etc.
I have never been inside the gateway arch but back in 2008 when my family and I drove to New Mexico for vacation, we drove by it. It’s definitely an incredible sight to see.
The Dodgers are originally from New York.
Yep they where called the Brooklyn Dodgers though.
Mister OCTOBER GOOD OLE NUMBER 44 BABY AND NUMBER 42
AM A DODGERS FAN ALSO just not the LA DODGERS BUT THE BROOKLYN DODGERS
Mount Rushmore, in South Dakota, is amazing. In a very unpopulated state... giving you a tiny sense when driving there or Wyoming or Montana with wide open spaces are what drew people west from the east coast passing through st louis.
Devil's tower is neat too, it's in Wyoming and featured in the movie Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind
Liberty Bell should have been in the top ten as a symbol, at least inside the US. Might not be so international recognizable but it's a VERY strong one inside the country.
The Golden Gate Bridge, for instance, is recognizable and beautiful, but it doesn't really mean anything.
Clearly the Arch isn’t a well-known symbol of America anywhere other than parts of the US.😂 14:16
Full house, that is supposed to take place in San Francisco and show the golden gate bridge, was widely watched in the US, family friendly sitcom.
When I was growing up in the 50s & 60s in the NYC/CT area, there were 2 kinds of baseball people. Yankee fans and the people you made fun of.
Hey guys! Love your channel.
St. Louis MO.
Brooklyn Dodgers your sorta right lol
Cowboys inextricably linked to the Battle of the Alamo? Who TF came up with that one?
Go Yankees!
It's all because of the only & main introduction to america are movies & t.v.
What do you mean not real the cable cars are iconic to San Francisco
McDonald's Arch in Alaska.
I wouldn't call a sports team a symbol of the US. I don't a watch any sports but even if I did.
The idea that Franklin wanted to the Turkey is not true. That rumor started only about 100 years ago.
I been to Mt Rushmore and devils tower
Two of my favorite places. Mt Rushmore twice. Once at dusk.
Well for me the El Paso Diabolos when I was a kid was the all American team. Oh and I would say the US Constitution is another. Thanks
Hi
Part of the poem on the Statue of Liberty::
“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
I don't know what the Alamo has to do with cowboys.
Becsuse most who fought there were cowbpys
@@TheNineball79 In the 1830's primarily what you had in Texas were vaqueros the cowboys and large cattle drives that we think of didn't come until much later beginning roughly in 1865 at the end of the civil war.
The "Gateway Arch" is in St. Louis, Missouri
Golden arch Missouri
Gateway Arch isn’t golden. It’s steel.
I recommend you read the Sonnet on the Pedestal of the Statue of Liberty written by American Poet Emma Lazarus. The sonnet it called "The New Collusus".
It's basically saying to bring all your poor, lame, and the homeless to our shores to breathe free but if you do come make sure you leave old grudges in the Old World because once you come to these shores you will all be Americans and it doesn't matter where you come from so long as you strive to make it a better place.
Yankees, No way. So many sport teams but none are deserving.
I am 47 years old and hated the Yankees for 47 years. If your team isn't the San Francisco Giant's(baseball), San Francisco 49ers(am. football), or the Golden State Warriors(basketball), you are my enemy. That's how I was raised. I don't think that they are a symbol of America. Baseball is, but no single team. Now mojo might think so because Short Round wore a Yankee's cap in The Temple of Doom😆. More foreigners probably know of the Yankees than other teams cause New York is a destination spot to visit.
A quote from a famous man " Babe Ruth was a fat man with little short girlie legs "
You guys need to watch the Aaron Tippin video Stars and stripes and Eagle Fly.
Hollywood sign. Not so much. William s
For those who’ve read your previous posts, no surprise whatsoever. A bit jealous?
One hint guys...QUIT doing Mojo videos, they are so weak.
The way they showed this was in bad taste.
Okay. This video is rather suspect. The New York Yankees? Seriously? I'm not even that sure about the Golden Gate Bridge. When I think of U.S. Symbols, I think of the bald eagle, the flag, and Uncle Sam primarily, not all these tourist destinations and certainly not a New York baseball team.
The hollywood sign is not the U.S. it's a big deal for LA, for the rest of the country not so much. This list left out some things that would be a better representation. MOJO tends to be unreliable in its lists. A lot of the others are pretty much true or close.
The Hollywood sign is very representative of the US around the world - of course it’s the US. American cinema and Hollywood are world renowned.
I can't wait for "Escape from LA" becomes a reality. It's almost there.
Stop with the political BS. Jesus -give it a rest.
new york and california are overrated. Two states I've never been to, and two states I will never go to
No one cares but no more Beesleys. This dude is sooo hard to listen to.
I love them, but yeah, James does need to enunciate more clearly... maybe slow down. It's difficult for my old ears to understand him much of the time.
@@user-vp4qq4it7i this guy sounds like a bowl of mush porridge. All spit.swarming and douche
