Nightmare of the Seas: Secrets of the Bobbit Worm Documentary

Eunice aphroditois, also known as the bobbit worm, is a fascinating and frightening predator that lives in the depths of the oceans. 🐍 This benthic pinworm is generally found in the Atlantic Ocean, but is also found in the Indo-Pacific regions. 🌏 They range in size from 10 cm (4 in) to 3 m (10 ft) and display a wide range of colours, from shiny, metallic to deep purple and black. 🌈
E. aphroditois is known for its unique hunting methods and interesting biology. This ambush predator buries its entire body in soft sediments on the ocean floor, leaving only its antennae exposed. Once it detects its prey, it attacks at lightning speed with its sharp mouthparts. ⚡️ These attacks are so powerful that they can split their prey in half. ✂️ This eyeless creature has five antennas to detect its prey and its body is covered with a hard exoskeleton. 🦾
The bobbit worm, believed to be named after the John and Lorena Bobbitt case, can also be found among coral reefs and lives in a variety of habitats, especially sandy and muddy sediments and around rocks and sponges. 🪸 This worm, recorded at a depth of 95 meters, can be easily hunted in narrow places thanks to its thin body. 🪨
