- Dame Thora Hird, DBE, 91, (28th May 1911 - 15th March 2003) was an English actress and comedian of stage and screen, presenter and writer. In a career spanning over 70 years, she appeared in more than 100 film and television roles, becoming a household name and a British institution. A three-time winner of the BAFTA TV Award for Best Actress, she won for Talking Heads: A Cream Cracker Under the Settee (1988), Talking Heads: Waiting for the Telegram (1998) and Lost for Words (1999). Her film credits included The Love Match (1955), The Entertainer (1960), A Kind of Loving (1962) and The Nightcomers (1971).
Thora Hird always stands out in my mind whenever I think back on my life . I was born and raised in Manchester and emigrated to Australia when I was 16. She epitomised everything I missed and still do . RIP Thora and thanks for the memories

I was introduced to Dame Thora Hird through “Last of the Summer Wine” on PBS in America and I appreciate this biography about her. I always like to see the story of the featured person, moments offscreen and their professional background. Dame Thora was wonderful on “Last....” and I will check out her earlier works.

In the posh off set dining room with Stephanie Beecham. He said “she spoke virtually nonstop in a thick northern English accent that I couldn’t penetrate.” Couldn’t understand a word she said.

She wasn't an evil auntie in LOTSW I think you are confusing her with Jean Alexander's character Auntie Wainwright
