Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you once again the sheer brilliance of Stephen Fry. And no, he's not having a go at Alan, this is actually a tribute to HIS genius!
I loved this. A tribute that's in no way a traitor. 'He did leave though. Got a scholarship to Oxford.I said, 'You make sure there's somewhere you can buy Kendal Mint Cake and a good bar of Wright's Coal-Tar Soap!' '.
"I said, Alan, if you want to get on in the world, you'd be wise to write down everything I say because it's gold, is what I say." Stephen predicted QI? 🤔
Oh,cripes, lol.Listen,I'm 50,my bladder can't handle stuff like this! Stephen Fry is absolutely genius. And I'm sure Alan Bennett,& Victoria Wood roared themselves hoarse if they watched it. I don't recall ever having seen this,so it's a real treat to see it!
This is hilarious: The Brits i. e. Alan Bennet do a classy series of monologues with superb writing and amazing actors and then they do a satire out of it. Unbeatable.
Is there any American theatrical or TV traditions of monologues like this? Sadly they've pretty much fallen out of fashion in the UK (the public don't have the attention span now, god help us!)
Keeping reference to Alan - Alan Bennett who wrote the talking heads, this is a talking head. Write down everything I say, its golds. Bennetts ideas are gold.
Wickedly funny is all I can say. I have all of Alan's "Talking Heads" most of which you can find on TH-cam. Couldn't find Eileen Atkins "Hand of God". It was one of the monologues by Alan and used to be on TH-cam but no more.
Robert Ross: Well - I am aware you posted your comment 4 years ago, but actually (in case you didn't notice it already) "Hand of God" IS available on YT: I just saw it and enjoyed it very much;-)
Maybe Fry is a fan of Alan Bennett, but I still hate his one-dimensional mockery of a northern accent, always doing it with a burr. He does this all the time on QI. The sketch is still hilarious.
Oh, it's one line in the diary about how Alan got some voiceover job that suddenly wasn't available when Fry returned. On the other hand, the bit here about interuterine devices, lip balm, and Pat Routledge coming round for elocution lessons tells a story that's never come out. Unless you talk to Moira Stuart.
It is from A Bit of Fry and Laurie but I don't know what season. They're currently being repeated on Satellite TV. I'd seen this years ago and always hoped I'd get to see it again. I don't think it was ever a personal attack against Alan Bennett; I believe Mr Fry is a huge fan of his work!
Did Stephen Frye write this?! It’s so well performed that it’s almost not right that he had the precision wit to parody Alan Bennett’s brilliant “Talking Heads” without trashing it.
The inclusion of either the live audience or laugh track spoils this. Stephen for all his talent, swallows some of his words and quite often that bloody annoying laughter and the speed with which he delivers the lines, meant that some of the monologue was lost, for me at least. Why fake laughter has to be included or even live audience noise for that matter...is beyond me. If it is funny we will laugh, if it is not we won't. Fake laughing will not make us think something is funny if it is not. We do not need to be told what to think and feel. Subliminal noise or music can add mood etc. But when it hogs the limelight over the production, it is time for film producers to go back to the film-makers class room and do a refresher.
Excellent spoof. Tonally and stylistically spot on and hilariously funny. However, rather overdone on the naming of products. Bennett actually does this very sparingly and the degree to which Fry and Laurie employ it here is much more of a Victoria Wood-ism
@CF1975 hehe When I saw this it reminded me of Little Britain. Or should I say I guess Little Britain reminds me of 'A bit of Fry and Laurie'. Even the intros are very similar. Ps. I love Stephen Fry! But lets all be honest. He makes a very unattractive woman.
mmmmmm. Yes but how dated this seems and how timeless Bennet still is. Still those were the days all you had to be was cruel about other people and BBC 2 lapped it up. Still theres always the Oscar Wilde and Noel Coward quotes and apple ipad endorsements to keep you in the public eye and the fact that your expartner is still slim and talented. meoww.
what was this from??x the background before the sketch starts looks as though its from the last series of A bit Of Fry and Laurie but I dont recall this sketch being in it....
Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you once again the sheer brilliance of Stephen Fry. And no, he's not having a go at Alan, this is actually a tribute to HIS genius!
Mannerisms and speech patterns were polished to hilarious perfection.
No they weren’t.
@@stephenpowers51 yes they were, your move....
A magnificent tribute to Alan Bennett, brilliantly written and played by Stephen Fry.
"But they don't get the Vimto buttered, do they?" I'm crying 😂
I love Bennett's Talking Heads. This is spectacular.
I'll go to the back of our fridge!

You're 60 now JohnPaul. How's your bladder?
Love Bennett's work and this is a very well observed spoof!
'I may not be as cabbage-looking as my tongue is a fisherman's doily'
Blushed to the roots of me playtex.
That was perfection.
Oh well said dear boy

Read Stephens 2nd biography and you will know how long he has idolized Bennett.,and how he first auditioned for one of Bennet's plays.
Stephen Fry with a northern accent is just weird!
He did slip a bit - his diction is always impeccable!
If he cant do a 'northern' accent, you know, from up there somewhere (i.e. nowhere), then his diction is hardly impeccable.
The way she/he buttons up that marvelous coat at the end....only the best actors can do that!
they
Alan woods...dont take the mickey out of one of the greatest writers of lets try and be english...😂😂😂 Great parody...got it spot on. 😂😂😂
Funny: when I just saw this, I thought Stephen Fry reminded me of the lady from 'Keeping up appearances': apparently that was done on purpose.
Keeping reference to Alan - Alan Bennett who wrote the talking heads, this is a talking head. Write down everything I say, its golds. Bennetts ideas are gold.
It sound like a tribute to both Alan Bennett and Victoria Wood
Hail Stephen Fry!!!
Rumour is Alan Bennett wrote this after Stephen slipped an acid tab in his tea.
It's very colloquial, regional speak, referring to very old fashioned reference points. Wouldn't expect an American to get it to be fair! :-)
We have this thing in America called Wikipedia!
Wickedly funny is all I can say. I have all of Alan's "Talking Heads" most of which you can find on TH-cam. Couldn't find Eileen Atkins "Hand of God". It was one of the monologues by Alan and used to be on TH-cam but no more.

Most have been removed now sadly
wow! that was great!
thanks for posting!
Pure genius. Anyone know how Alan Bennett liked them?
I love it,thank you so much xx
LUVVV STEPHAN FRY....in anything he does...altho...here...I've no idea what he's saying ...but!!!its good!!!! :?
It's an affectionate parody.
Perfection! Wish there was more available! TYSM
Brilliant.. 😂😂😂

very good

So good, love it. 😊
Did Stephen Frye write this?! It’s so well performed that it’s almost not right that he had the precision wit to parody Alan Bennett’s brilliant “Talking Heads” without trashing it.
Fry and Laurie wrote all of their content on their own
This might be his career best bit.

As unpleasant a truth as it is, the reason for the ubiquity of both laugh-tracks and live audiences is that they do work.
It was standard in the 80's. It didn't begin to change from the late 90's onwards
Fry and Laurie was recorded by a live studio audience in Studio TC8 at the BBC Television Centre, so no laugh track used
I already find the monologues hilarious. Mainly that accent they use. 😂😂😂
oor patricia ed be riiite prooud!
anyone know wherevi can watch Lost for words 🤔
Stephen Fry does this so well! I wonder who wrote it? Brilliant!
he did...or he and Hugh Laurie did!
You probably have to see the 'Talking Heads' series to have a full appreciation of Mr. Fry's performance here. It is absolutely wonderful!
Love Alan
Just like my grandma
Bloody great..........

When will stephen direct another film, many famous actors only direct one movie.
thnxx

Love it, but the canned laughter drives me crazy.
