    My great-grandmother and my mom would have chilled celery and sometimes green onions in a tall glass with cold water. My great-grandmother had little rectangular shaped crystal salt containers, she would place beside your plate, to dip the celery or spring onions in.

    The celery vase was, in its time, a signifier of the wealth and status of those who served the rare and expensive vegetable at their table. The celery vase fell out of fashion by the late 19th century, and was replaced instead by long, flat, glass serving dishes.

    I also found a Steuben console bowl @Goodwill, was $4.99, but had my $5 “frequent flyer “ discount, so cost me $0. I was shaking went I saw the signature on the bottom. Love it, and I have my mom’s American Fostoria glassware wine/water goblets (mom and dad married in 1940) just Like the clear vase you considered.

    Solid purple dark turquoise or blue are the most popular and the rarest ones. Apparently the purple and the blue ones went on every 10th poor and the purple ones went on every hundredth pole as a marker. This is third-party information so I may be wrong but the coloured ones I mentioned are quite valuable

  • @davidwhitten2097
    @davidwhitten2097 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    Hi Jocelyn, the first insulator you picked up is a "Hemingray - 42". Made by Hemingray Glass Company of Muncie, Indiana. The typical aqua color (for that particular type) dates it to between *about* 1921 and 1930. The Hemi-42s are the most common glass insulators ever made in the US (for telegraph and telephone lines), so the average value is very low - about 50 cents to a dollar. (True green (no aqua) would be worth more - about $15 to 25). Prices definitely way too high in the booth. The second insulator you picked up (light aqua, but rather dusty so hard to see the exact color) is nicknamed a "Beehive" style by collectors, that one made by Brookfield Glass Company and has a "B" on the skirt..... Dates from around 1900 to 1919. Most "beehives" date between 1884 and about 1920, although some were made later - depending on exact markings! The others on the shelf all looked fairly common as well. PS - If you ever get a chance - you and Andrew should check out the annual Mid-Ohio Insulator Show held every November in Springfield, Ohio (at the Fairgrounds which are across the Interstate from the huge Antique Mall you went to a while back!) There you'll see a huge variety of rare, unusual, colorful insulators - purple, amber, milkglass, true greens, cobalt blues, etc.... Not usually seen!

    Jocelyn, I was wondering if the yucky bottom on the amber colored basket made in Italy, was simply some kind of glue, put there (to grip felt or?) to keep it from sliding.

      The ones near me in NC barely have a hardware section. If they do, it's cheap stuff and most of the time chipped. My son, who's 8 and loves thrifting, and I usually go to the ones in tourist towns near us but in another state.
