Please explain to the guys that the buildings in Japan, where many of these quakes are, are specifically designed to sway back and forth. This ability to move with the quake, keeps the building from cracking and crumbling causing more damage and death.

That is the newer buildings. I was in the 1989 earthquake in San Francisco. Any high rise built after can withstand some earthquakes. If it is big enough, even that won't help.

@@adc2327 As I said, the buildings that were swaying, and yet not falling, were purposefully made to withstand quakes. Of course if a massive quake, beyond anything recorded in modern history were to happen, then obviously the systems could fail.

I’m rather humbled and emotional at the moment . I know they are sensitive, compassionate , humble people .
This video got to me . This is the first time I recall seeing Raeen with such gravity on his face and in his eyes and it HURT my heart . His look was so somber and heavy .
I knew Babu would be his gentle , thoughtful, prayerful and grateful self and that’s still humbling. Sarru was serious and this time more “ grown up “ but Raeens facial reactions just hammered me . He’s more sensitive than some people know . His heart runs deep .

They should see what happened in Japan of March 2011 when a Massive Earthquake hit just offshore of Japan. It also caused a devastating Tsunami after the Earthquake. This can happen often depending where the earthquake is and how strong it was.

Skyscrapers (those very tall buildings) are designed to sway like that in earthquakes and that swaying with the earthquake helps to prevent it from collapsing. They sway because they have spring suspension systems under the building's foundation. They will even sway a little bit during very strong windstorms.
EDIT: There are also rubber and hydraulic suspension systems. Maybe there are other types as well.

Admittedly I instantly go outside my single storey house but once away from the building the sensation is pretty cool to experience. If I was in a city with large buildings or my house was surrounded by mountains it would be a completely different story, I would definitely not enjoy it. It would be good for the boys to learn more about how earthquakes are caused or about 'The Ring of Fire' in the Pacific, it's really fascinating stuff and shows there is much more to it than a God being angry.

I grew up in southern california not too far from San Andreas fault line and I've been through my fair share of quakes. I remember one we had in 82'my family was at my aunts house and she had a good sized in ground pool. The earthquake almost emptied the pool. Her concrete wall broke and fell in the yard we had roads crack there was pictures of dirt and dust coming offbthe local mountains and it reminded me of a dog shaking off dirt. Whole hills were cut in half as none side dropped like 10 feet and slid down hill. It was bad but luckily there was no deaths just injuries. People in that area were used to earthquakes and knew what to do in case of one. They even taught us in grade school what to do during earthquakes.

I was on the 12th floor of a high rise building during an earthquake. There was no damage that I’m aware of. I live in earthquake prone California and in certain areas of the state, buildings have to meet earthquake codes to help prevent them from collapsing. Of course a big enough earthquake could destroy anything but having the codes makes a big difference and minimizes the destruction.

I think people laugh after an earthquake out of nervousness. I've been in a few, and once one starts, you never know how bad it's going to get. It's literally deciding every second it goes on how to react. Is it big enough that you need to get to a safer place in case things start falling? You might sit for a few seconds and wonder if it's just going to be a small one. But every second, you are trying to judge just how bad it's going to be.

In japan (which is seems like many of these videos came from) the tall buildings are designed to rock with the motion of the earth. they get so many earth quakes that they have made incredible breakthroughs in building design for earthquake safety. There are several videos showing their buildings rocking but not breaking during an earth quake because that is how they are designed.
I'm sure the people only seem careless. they are quite used to earthquakes by now. it's a regular part of their lives, but that doesn't mean they don't worry. I've found that laughing after something that intense is a pretty standard human response to the sudden relief that you are alive and well and so are the people you love.

I’ve been in some of the earthquakes shown on this video. The one I remember the most was the one in Osaka on which timestamp shows June 18th 2018. It woke me up. Than one was enough to throw quite a few things to the ground. In the one people are laughing there’s a voice in the background saying “this is not something to laugh about!” In Japan earthquakes happen so often that buildings are requires to be earthquake proof, the old ones won’t stand so well. Kids begin evacuation drills ever since they are in pre-school, and they always have a protective helmet by their chairs at school to use when it shakes and then proceed to evacuate to the school’s sports ground or to high elevation spots in case a tsunami warning is issued.

the buildings swaying are actually good. in earthquake prone countries, the building are made to have flexible foundations, because if they are solid and can't handle movement, they will fail and collapse, but if they move with the quake, there is less force being put on it, and it will survive.

  • @davidmichaelson1092
    @davidmichaelson1092 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I have experienced many earthquakes. I grew up in Los Angeles. I learned from almost birth what to do in an earthquake so it became reflex when an earthquake hit at night to be up, out of bed, and in a protected doorway before I was even awake.
I can say earthquakes below a 4 are trivial. Around a 5 I actually found them enjoyable...like a gentle swaying. In fact I should note that tall buildings that are well designed for earthquakes sway dramatically to take the force of the shaking without collapsing.
Once you get over 6 they become terrifying. I was a kid during the Sylmar quake in Los Angeles. I was terrified and helpless. I also experienced the Northridge quake when I was in graduate school. As I said, I am used to being up, out of bed, and in a doorway before I am awake when an earthquake hits. That time I was up, out of bed, and flat on my face on the floor because the shaking knocked me over.
