@Caedmon Kline You indeed reflect deeply. I can share this that follows. I go the way of the Zen Master Dogen Zenji which in brief goes like this. To study the Buddha way is to study the self. To study the self is to forget the self ✨ Dogen does not mean forgetting in the sense of getting high on some drugs or drinks, or having medical problems in our brain. Rather one just sits in zazen meditation letting thoughts ✨ come and go with no expectations of gaining anything. Philosophy is questions that may never be answered. Religion is answers that may never be questioned. Take your pick: Freedom or shackles? Inquiry or dogma?
False. But don't talk about the secular dogmatism of today... that cannot be questioned! _S-s-h-h!_ Freedom (Judeo-Christian principles) or shackles (secular regimes, communism, socialism, tyranny, dictatorships, etc.) Inquiry (the reasonableness and internal consistency of Christianity and timelessness of those principles) or dogma (the atheists naturalistic philosophy that is accepted, not questioned and undermines equality, intrinsic human worth, liberty, and even science).

Religion has played a major role in human history as it has provided people with both meaning and morality. Since humans have evolved to survive and reproduce, an essential mechanism of human psychology is the desire to search for purpose, something that gives us a reason to keep on living. The morality point is also very significant because moral disagreements and searching for a basis of morality is hard and these questions have been debated for a really long time, but when you're simply told that what god says is right and that's it, it's a lot easier to maintain social cohesion.
Thx for this video. These insights are definitely helpful when comparing the work of other philosophers. If you want to understand Nietchze's eventual breaking away from his " great teacher", this is a strong example of some of those disagreements. Schopenhaur made a stronger case for the importance of pity and human compassion.

Ecclesiastes 12:13 Now, everything has been heard, so I give my final advice: Honor God and obey his commands, because this is all people must do.
Don't forget Feuerbach when talking about Schopenhauer criticism on religion. He followed a long-established tradition since the "philosophes" and Enlightenment.
This is a School. We are here living this life to learn and grow. The lessons we are to be taught are already prepared and where some of them may be pleasant experiences many of them may be hard and painful as well.
This has been a very cruel and unproductive ‘school system’ for the majority of the ‘students’ on this planet. The large majority of human beings throughout history have suffered horrifically and learnt absolutely nothing of value before their own inevitable deaths.
Not to mention all of the other non-human sentient beings on this planet that are completely incapable of even comprehending that they are nothing more than survival machines
The Bible is written on 3 different (but simultaneous) levels. The first level is “literal”, the second level is pertaining to “types or foreshadowings” of Christ, and the third is “allegorical” for each person’s individual (spiritual) journey through life. Even though I believe that the third level may be the most meaningful to me personally, that does not invalidate the other two. - As I’ve studied, I’ve found very good evidence that the more recent stories in the Bible are true. There is even significant archeological evidence for the flood and for the exodus. Therefore, I have no reason to doubt the literal story of creation either. Just because I have no reason to doubt the literal accounts, does not mean that I think that the literal stories are “the point” that we need to take away. - The literal accounts are to express the allegorical meaning for your life and mine, which is expressed in the life of Jesus the Christ.
True kingdom "christianity" isn't pessimistic at all. I find views like this guy a way to escape accountability for their own choices. Of course those who hate the truth won't tell you why they REALLY don't believe... anything to put the responsibility on others
@@megancrager4397 - I struggled with Schopenhauer’s definitions of “optimism and pessimism”, but I think the narrator meant that he was talking about pessimism of our current “physical” world. When the Bible says “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” this is that “negative” view of the World that we find in Christianity…. Whereas, in the book of Genesis, God looked at His creation and said that it was “very good”.
Well let's look at the creation story of the bible. Maybe school children may take it as a literal thing but by adolescence it seems preposterous to be so. Yet it is a great creation myth and just ones amonst thousands around the world. How would a wise elder of a tribe explain to the rest the nature of man and his propensity towards selfishness and violence but also very selfless and giving and kind. To explain that in literal terms would fall so short. Talking snakes, burning bushes, magic tricks, super heroes can't be best for story telling. Don't believe me just look at the comic book heroe movies box office dollar amounts. They probably sell more copies than bible, Quran, Bhgadvita combined.
Just a note that the same antagonisms exist between Judaism and Christianity in their esoteric versions. For the most part Christian Gnosticism cannot be reconciled with Yaldabaoth’s material creation.
Very good video but more emphasis should be placed on what really distinguishes Schopenhauer and Buddhism from the rest: the illusory nature not only of the material world but of the ego itself, and salvation as transcendence of the self rather than as entrance of the ego into some heavenly kingdom.
This is what Christ taught also but it was never understood by the Western church. The Ethiopian church preserved the transcendental teachings of the Messiah of Israel.

What is das fundamental law of Buddhism ? This is because that is; This is not because that is not. This and that: You are in me because I am in you; We are 1! Das one who knows das one becomes das one. Oneness within oneself brings oneness with das whole universe. Man is a god in ruin. 1. Illness exists because of 2. Illinterbeing. 3. Wellness exists because of 4. Wellinterbeing. Das fundamental law of Buddhism gives rise to 4 noble truths: 1. Life is suffering 2. People suffer because of attachment to impermanent things. 3. Suffering can be liberated=happiness by 4. Right path. There is only 2 mistakes on de Dao to nirvana: 1. Not starting 2. Not going all de Dao.
To be honest is very dangerous. To be autonomic under any dogma and misbeliefs is a death-penalted sin. We have deard an excellent narration. Thanks, you are not so fast and did articulation!!!
In Christianity, the ‘world’ and the ‘kingdom’ are both within, and one can die in the flesh or live in the light of eternity. This way of living requires very little vocabulary to be expressed and practiced; it’s a choice we are forced daily to make, fairytales or not. Personally, I’m attracted to Hinduism/Buddhism because it attempts to use reasoning as a basis to belief. But any honest monk will encourage worship and renunciation, however unreasonable, if it helps attain unworldly endearment. Thank you for what you do here, conveying so much clarity in such a short amount of time.
I don't see how metaphysical one has to be to get the idea of loving your neighbor as you love yourself to treat people the way you would want to be treated and not to treat people the way you would not want to be treated. Maybe difficult to do all the time but not all that deep.
Humanity is always searching for a hero - religion was inevitable ..... the challenge is that not all agree with this defined hero and therefore search for alternatives!

@@WeltgeistYT Don't worry about it. Schopehauer's so difficult and profound that 99% of the people wouldn't really understand if they listened to the same sentence a hundred times, so "speed-reading Schopenhauer" sounds like a Woody Allent joke.
The series "Midnight Mass" currently streaming on Netflix actually is built around the dangers of literal interpretation of Scripture; and some of the scenes match up with the horrifying images being shown here. The series is terrifying on a number of levels.
Omg yes. I had a teacher explain the inner and outer court. So interesting to see the people in my society that hold their faiths in absolutes and literal interpretation of allegory are not the types to be concerned or inspired by any philosophical texts. They are also deeply judgemental and simultaneously fearful of others religious practices.
If its masked it's because the people within it are arrogant and ignorant, I've met plenty of religious people that like to question things and ponder/review their own religion but the majority like to choose a team and follow it blindly rather than have to do any work for themselves and truly know what they believe
As a pagan, I find Schopenhauer's distinction between pessimism and optimism compelling, though I would argue for a middle ground, one of neutrality. This is where I think he is unfair to Judaism, which has idealistic elements (in the Talmud, and also influences from Neoplatonism, e.g., from Philo). There is also Judah HaLevy and Maimonides, who argue that (contra Aristotle) the world is not eternal. And on to Buddhism, there is not an emphasis on the complete denial of the material world (asceticism), since that itself is a form of striving, and a life of moderation is generally recommended (similar, interestingly, to Aristotle's ethics). So Schopenhauer does simplify a bit, either from incomplete understanding of particular religions, or from trying to fit them into his greater narrative. In this sense, he commits some of the same errors as his philosophical (and personal) nemesis, Hegel.
And to think that veds were written by one of the first human civilizations. Amazing. Another thing to add, Buddhism emerged as a reaction to Hinduism ( specifically brhaman hegemony in Hinduism and the prevalence of rituals )
Having dived into Nietzsche, it's a fun trip to browse Schopenhauer... Lots of "Aha! They agree, once again!" Schopenhauer: Religion is the metaphysics of the masses... Nietzsche: Christianty is Platonism for the people. Edit:typo
Emanuel swedenborg exsplains all the allegory, ive been useing it in my regeneration guided threw the word repentance and prayer , all the bible has inner meaning and it refers to our regeneration
Judaism is the history of a tribe, and its narrative is aspirational, so 'optimistic' in that sense. Christianity is dualistic and world-denying, Who was it called it 'Plato for the masses' ? I have read some Schopenhauer, and he admires Buddhism for directly addressing the problem of pain and suffering. Christianity does too, by inviting the worshipper to identify with Christ's suffering. Buddha instead gives a recipe to escape suffering, by avoiding 'attachment' to material things.
Of course, conspicuous by its absence here is Islam, which has its mystical aspects, as well as offering a solid structure of everyday life and a strong resonance with the Old Testament. Schopenhauer said of the Koran " Perhaps it suffers in the translation, but I cannot find a single original idea in the whole thing!" Which misses the point that in rejecting Christianity Islam refers back to the Old Testament.
Samsara and nirvana are not external realities in Buddhism, rather they are the ways by which beings experience reality. That is, man's projection of a reality onto things is what makes them what they are and is what makes them liberating or enslaving. Reality itself cannot be considered independent from the mind that experiences it and is neither intrinsically good nor bad.
The statement that the story of Adam and Eve "works as an allegory" is highly debatable. An all-knowing God would have known before even creating the world what would happen if he set his first man and woman in a garden with a tree whose fruit they weren't supposed to eat and a silver-tongued talking snake he knew would talk them into it. Adam and Eve were set up. The blame for the suffering characteristic of life on earth still falls on God.
@@asdf1991asdf If a human parent put their children into a situation they knew in advance would be disastrous for them, and would lead to suffering not just for them but for all their descendants, you would find that justifiable because the parents were letting their children "learn"?
@@asdf1991asdf To paraphrase an old expression, "With all power comes all responsibility." An all-powerful and all-knowing god, who obviously knew beforehand what would happen if he set things up in the Garden of Eden as he did, bears sole blame for what happened. Not only did all creation suffer the consequences of "the fall", but the vast majority of humans who ever lived were condemned after they died to eternal torture in the hell god created as well, because they'd never heard of, or accepted, in just the right way, god's son. Thankfully, all of this is just mythology, but it's a rather ugly mythology, and the "free will" excuse doesn't cut it.
@@c.a.t.732 “Rather ugly mythology” All myths have a darker element that is “ugly” but these darker metaphors and allegory are used as a learning tool and a warning to convey a universal truth regarding humanities potential for committing great evil if they don’t have self control and don’t use they’re free will for the good of their fellow man. Even evolution contains myths and metaphors which if taken literally have the potential to lead to harmful ideologies. For example misleading metaphors such as “survival of the fittest” and “selfish genes” are also very “ugly” if taken literally and have actually been misunderstood by the general public and used by dictators to justify all kinds of atrocities leading to nihilistic ideologies and ideas about a supreme race of Humanity that is above values such as morals and ethics. But anyone who’s taken a basic course in philosophy knows that… “Genes can not be selfish or unselfish, anymore than atoms can be jealous, elephants abstract or biscuits teleological” (Mary Midgley). Equally, Herbert Spencer who coined the “survival of the fittest” phrase later said he regretted the metaphor as it was completely misunderstood. Even Richard Dawkins later stated he regretted the “selfish gene” metaphor after much criticism from the brilliant Humanist and philosopher Mary Midgley. According to the Auschwitz survivor Viktor Frankl who was a psychiatrist and scientist (and survivor of two Nazi death camps) those who perceive humanity as nothing more than biological and chemical robots and machines are a danger to our families and our children. In Frankl's classic book, (The Doctor and the Soul) he stated : "When we present man as an automaton of reflexes, as a mind-machine, as a bundle of instincts, as a pawn of drives and reactions, ... we feed the nihilism to which modern man is, in any case, prone. I became acquainted with the last stage of that corruption in my second concentration camp, Auschwitz. The gas chambers of Auschwitz the ultimate consequence of the theory that man is nothing but the product of heredity and environment--or, as the Nazis liked to say, "Blood and Soil." I am absolutely convinced that the gas chambers of Auschwitz, Treblinka, and Maidanek were ultimately prepared not in some ministry or other in Berlin, but rather at the desks and lecture halls of nihilistic scientists and philosophers." (Victor Frankl).
@@c.a.t.732 “Eternal torture in hell” Fair points but it depends on whether you are a fanatical young Earth creationist who takes the metaphors and allegory written during the Bronze Age literally or whether your a liberal Christian and universalist who believes that these ancient texts convey a deeper universal truth that requires hermeneutics to be understood within their true social, cultural and historical context. Universalists also believe that everyone will find reconciliation eventually and liberal Christians move with the times in the same way Jesus accepted Romans, Samaritans, drunks, tax collectors and prostitutes by seeing the dignity and search for love in all people and all relationships no matter how misguided. No offence intended but this claim that “Hell” is an enforced punishment and a physical place is a straw man argument and a version of “Hell” that is often used by militant atheists using appeals to emotion. But the fact is that for many theists “Hell” is not a place as such but a metaphor to describe our state of being and free will. I thought this was common knowledge to be honest because just a peripheral search on the internet demonstrates that most theists view “Hell” as the state of freely choosing to reject love, truth, morality and goodness. So it’s a bit disingenuous to say the least to criticise a concept of “Hell” if you know this concept of Hell isn’t held by most believers because it can’t logically exist, not to mention the fact that it is clearly irrational, unfair and unjust which is why most intelligent theists don’t believe in this straw man version of “Hell” either. Nevertheless, it’s still a valid topic for discussion as this version of “Hell” is still promoted by too many fanatics possibly young Earth creationists. However, where do you even get the benchmark from for claiming its immoral to send rapists, murderers and dictators who committed genocide to this imaginary and straw man version of “Hell” in the first place because this is a value judgement, that is a metaphysical presupposition that can not be grounded in the materialistic/atheistic paradigm as materialism clearly excludes metaphysical realities so everything is arbitrary and ad hoc under this world view. Morals and ethics including knowledge and science it’s all just the by product of a blind, mindless, merciless, pitiless, meaningless process and the random motion of atoms and brain chemicals creating the illusion of stable patterns and regularities under the materialistic/atheistic paradigm. Nevertheless, no one sends anyone to “Hell” because aren’t child rapists and child murderers already in a state of (Hell) the moment they decided to commit such a depraved and horrific act against a child or an adult. ? They are willingly self deceived and have put themselves in this state of (being) known as “Hell”. It is their own free will and depravity that has put them in a state of “Hell”. Dostoyevsky illustrates this point really well in his book (Crime and Punishment) Ironically prominent militant atheists such as Richard Dawkins even though they insist morality is “arbitrary” and not real they dishonestly appeal to emotion and morality to promote the idea that it’s the people who believe in justice/“Hell” that are evil, immoral and depraved in some way. I think the bereaved parents of children who have been raped and murdered would beg to differ that they are “immoral and evil” for teaching their children who are still alive that these depraved individuals who remorselessly took their sister or brothers life have gone to some kind of “Hell”. People are very complex and come in shades of grey not black and white. Dawkins stereotyping clearly leads to prejudice and hatred against moderate religious believers but also the victims of crime and evil because it cherry picks the concept of Justice/karma (Hell) out of context and clearly turns it on the victims of depraved crimes such as rape and murder victims. If I had a young daughter who was horrifically attacked and raped but the perpetrator got off Scot free and I told my daughter that person will suffer Karma and some kind of “Hell” for what they did as this is an inevitable outcome for evil depraved people does that make me “immoral and evil” ? Clearly not! Would my daughter also be “immoral and evil” if she taught this to her own children as an adult. ? The answer is no because that would be an unbelievably callous and insensitive thing to say to a victim of rape. No one really gets comfort from revenge as anyone who’s been the victim of an horrific crime will tell you. However, is it wrong for parents to take comfort in the fact that the person who raped and murdered their child has been caught and put in prison and might also be punished in some way in some kind of afterlife. ?What about the holocaust victims some of the Nazis were never caught. ? Is prison even a fair punishment for what these kind of people did ? If an afterlife is real would it be right that these kind of people are punished in some way ? The fact is that many Christians don’t believe that people who are capable of doing even the kinds of things the Nazis and child murderers and child rapists did are forced into Hell for ever but are actually there by their own free will and choice in some paradoxical way. C.S. Lewis describes the inevitable outcome of the slippery slope to depravity and evil as a continuous act of free will that takes an individual into the regions of the state of being known as “Hell” when he states“ all get what they want they do not always like it” (C.S.Lewis). Nevertheless, many Christians don’t even believe in “Hell” as a place as such but view it as more of a metaphor for the ontological and teleological state of our free will, existence, being and consciousness in the afterlife. Also a lot of Christians believe that the metaphorical gates of “Hell” are locked from the inside and everyone in there has their own personal Key which they carry on a chain around their neck like it’s some great weight but in reality it’s actually a tiny petty, controlling, cunning, deceitful, narcissistic little thing that tells lies and wants nothing but revenge and for everyone else to suffer “Hell”. Christianity is about love not controlling people’s free will through fear. Free will, that is freedom to doubt and question gives us the only joy, virtue, love and happiness worth having. No one goes to “Hell” just for having doubts or being an atheist just as no one reaches heaven purely through the fear of Hell. We are all atheists, theists and agnostics to a degree. No offence intended all the best to you and your family and keep safe during this Corona virus crisis ❤️ According to the prominent militant atheist and scientific populariser Richard Dawkins...... “The belief that the rape and murder of a child is immoral and evil is as arbitrary as the fact that we evolved five fingers instead of six. “ Most people naturally recoil in disgust from Dawkins callous and cold logic. Similarly, I find his response repulsive and I just don’t have enough faith to be gullible enough to believe that the belief that raping and murdering a child is as “arbitrary as the fact that we evolved five fingers instead of six”. This is why so many people find objective morality so compelling. Which is why I take the default position that is the belief in the qualitative subjective experience of reality and existence, that is the belief in the fundamental nature of mind and consciousness/theism. So the belief in the fundamental nature of mind and consciousness/theism is just a default position and a (non belief) in materialism/atheism until dogmatic pragmatists, materialists, atheists or “Skeptics” who ironically appeal to falsificationism to undermine metaphysics can demonstrate that “matter” is all there is to reality and existence not mind and consciousness. There’s nothing wrong with just saying “we don’t know” and adopting the hypothesis that is most coherent and has the greatest explanatory power and is the most parsimonious hypothesis, that is mind and consciousness/theism. The theory of coherence trumps materialistic foundationalism, utilitarianism and dogmatic pragmatism/relativism.
@@georgedoyle7971 The Nazis were hardly as irreligious and nihilistic as you're making them out. Hitler believed in God, and Christianity, both Catholic and Protestant, was a common denominator in the party. The German wehrmacht in WW 2 wore the slogan "gott mit uns" ("God with us") on their belt-buckles. To cast what happened in Auschwitz and elsewhere as the product of people who "perceive humanity as nothing more than biological chemical robots" is absurd. And of course for centuries atrocities were carried out, from torturing and burning people alive to the entire western slave trade, based on justification from the Bible, by people who were deeply religious and had a grand concept of an afterlife and a soul, and who felt that the awful deeds they were carrying out were God's work. And as far a "free will" goes... God repeatedly "hardens peoples hearts", most notably Pharaoh (repeatedly) and his entire army in the service of His malignant games in the Bible. The Old Testament has a lot of stuff in it. It is more of a library than a single book. But I am not sure where he gets the idea of its optimism from. Did he not read the book of Ecclesiastics? No smart person who has been paying attention can miss the flaws in the material world. The Greeks noticed it too and talked about it in their tragedies. But, it is the only world that we know for sure exists. So we have to try to make the best of it.

There is no evidence of god and morality in the Bible is contradictory and infantile

If you want to understand Nietchze's eventual breaking away from his " great teacher", this is a strong example of some of those disagreements.
School? Do you mean that literally or allegorically? 😉

Whereas, in the book of Genesis, God looked at His creation and said that it was “very good”.
there was no exodus thus invalidating both first and second testament. the hyksos were the israelies ousted from egypt to judea.

Judaism is the history of a tribe, and its narrative is aspirational, so 'optimistic' in that sense.
Christianity is dualistic and world-denying, Who was it called it 'Plato for the masses' ?
I have read some Schopenhauer, and he admires Buddhism for directly addressing the problem
of pain and suffering. Christianity does too, by inviting the worshipper to identify with Christ's
suffering. Buddha instead gives a recipe to escape suffering, by avoiding 'attachment' to material things.
Of course, conspicuous by its absence here is Islam, which has its mystical aspects, as well as
offering a solid structure of everyday life and a strong resonance with the Old Testament.
No samsara and nirvana are clearing external realities
There is no external reality. Reality is empty and it’s arising is dependent on your realization.

@@c.a.t.732
“Rather ugly mythology”
All myths have a darker element that is “ugly” but these darker metaphors and allegory are used as a learning tool and a warning to convey a universal truth regarding humanities potential for committing great evil if they don’t have self control and don’t use they’re free will for the good of their fellow man. But anyone who’s taken a basic course in philosophy knows that…
“Genes can not be selfish or unselfish, anymore than atoms can be jealous, elephants abstract or biscuits teleological” (Mary Midgley).
@@c.a.t.732
“Eternal torture in hell”
Fair points but it depends on whether you are a fanatical young Earth creationist who takes the metaphors and allegory written during the Bronze Age literally or whether your a liberal Christian and universalist who believes that these ancient texts convey a deeper universal truth that requires hermeneutics to be understood within their true social, cultural and historical context.
Dostoyevsky illustrates this point really well in his book (Crime and Punishment)
Ironically prominent militant atheists such as Richard Dawkins even though they insist morality is “arbitrary” and not real they dishonestly appeal to emotion and morality to promote the idea that it’s the people who believe in justice/“Hell” that are evil, immoral and depraved in some way.
No offence intended all the best to you and your family and keep safe during this Corona virus crisis ❤️
According to the prominent militant atheist and scientific populariser Richard Dawkins......
“The belief that the rape and murder of a child is immoral and evil is as arbitrary as the fact that we evolved five fingers instead of six. “
Most people naturally recoil in disgust from Dawkins callous and cold logic.
The German wehrmacht in WW 2 wore the slogan "gott mit uns" ("God with us") on their belt-buckles.
