  • Autism has become a widely-discussed topic in todays media, with many sources positing different causes for the disorder. In this SciCafe, associate professor of neuroscience and molecular biology at Princeton University Samuel Wang discusses how to decipher the risks associated with causing autism, as well as its neurology, and genetics.

The connection between autism and science interest is really interesting. What if, since people in either group tend to be very observant and intensely, sometimes narrowly interested in patterns, those genes affect the parts of the brain involved in attention scheduling and pattern detection?

My mom actually was in a major hurricane strike zone. I was supposed to be born in January . I was 4 or 5 weeks early. I was born in December. Hurricane Hugo was in September. I was born in 1989. I might have autism. I did some screening tests. Autism canada said I got 38 and 30 to 50 is high risk. I also was barely underweight. My mom's amniotic fluid sac was leaking so she was induced with pitocin.

I forgot to say my sister was born on February the 7th , and there was no birth spacing, then I was born 4 or 5 weeks early on December the 11th. It was after a major hurricane , named Hugo.

Have you tested people whose genes are closely related. 25 percent of my genes are originally from St Bart's in the Caribbean. I was told that for at least 200 years 7 families (white) continue to have children with each other. I know after was around 1910, 1920, some people from other islands came and vice versa. Anyway, I read new people from other French areas moved in which is great. For years Wikipedia said St Bart's was just incest. I was half sure they were wrong. Anyway, I was just told info at like 1 and never wanted to know more again. (I'm talking about from family members not from Wikipedia). Anyway, when my father was 40 or around there he had a baby with someone near the same age, and I'm half sure he has autism. (And I know he uses glasses) I didnt know my father when he was born so I didn't pay attention to the information. Anyway , he's 19 now I think

I'd love to know where this work is going. It is an anomaly amongst most autism science, not because it is wrong, but because it is not the status quo of autism science. Outstanding he has an autistic sister, it helps him to relate, and to see without prejudice, I'm sure. Has a bit of a tie in to Teitlebaums' work www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC25000/

anyone who declares himself a scientist will never understand the true nature of reality

      science does not mean logic

Science is just the most efficient process that we humans have come up with to distinguish between truth and falsehoods.

      science is the new religion

Science is the polar opposite of religion. Science is based on evidence whereas religions base their beliefs on faith which is the absence of evidence.
