My "back-up plan" was a distant relative... the grandson of my maternal great aunt. Only our agreement was; "If we are alone when we are 60, we will live together and take care of each other". Life happened. He married, had a step-child, divorced, and lived with his grandmother in rural WV (I don't think he ever traveled more than 100 miles from where he grew up! ). I lived all over the country, joined the Navy, traveled the world, married (happily), had two sons. Unfortunately when we were in our late 30's, he died of Aids (late 1980's). I always knew he was a HEAVILY closeted gay person but where he lived was definitely NOT LGBTQ friendly. He was heavily religious, I was an atheist. He was a staunch conservative, I was a radical liberal. I became a widow at 62 yrs old. I know in my heart that there is no way we could have co-habituated and remained friends. But I wish he could have been around and found some happiness in his life... He had so little during his short time one earth!

I am the back up plan. My GF was still in love with her ex boyfriend when we met. I expected her to dump me and go back to him the whole five years we dated. Then, I was surprised when one day, she asked me to marry her. We've been married 34 years.

@@christianordonez6675 - I've been trained to be second fiddle all my dating life. You just get used to being dumped for somebody else. One day she can't get enough of me and the next day she can't see me anymore. I think it was her mother forbidding her to see me but we never went out again. Oh well, I'm doing well today.

Why marry someone who has been with you since the beginning, knows more about you, and truly cares about you when you can waste years on a emotionally charged dating crusade just to reminisce about what you should of had?
Marriage isn't something I considered or felt I needed. Just happened to meet the person who explained it in such a way that made sense.
Had a pact with friend who I had a huge crush on and she knew it in high school, She friend zoned me but said if we're still single by 30 we should get married (I didn't take her words serious). Spent my 20s focusing on my business while still keeping in touch, she ended up having a kid with another guy who didn't stick around, we still kept in touch but by the time 30 was coming up we started casually dating, by 30 she asked to get married but I was already seeing someone else casually that was 23 and got her pregnant so now 6 years later happily married with my younger wife 😄😄😄 life is funny ps I heard she's still single but has another baby daddy

I didn't marry mybback up plan, he was never in my plans, I turned him down the first time he asked me out, a year later we met again and started hanging out a friends, joked about trying to date just for the heck of it, been married a year now and it's the best decision I ever made, I love him and he loves me and we are best friends
I'm 31 and divorced at the beginning of the year. I have a fwb from before I met my ex husband that I'm on friendly terms with. He doesn't want kids, I do. We made a pact after my divorce-- if I'm not happily married by 40, I will marry him and get cute fur babies instead of human babies. We otherwise get along together great, but he thinks I'd be a great mom and wants me to have that chance, so we'll see what happens.
Instead of saying first, I'm going to answer the question (kinda, not married yet but it still applies). Almost 2 years ago my best friend and I decided that if neither of us found a person through college, we would just get together. That agreement lasted about a week because we then started dating lol.

just remember that it’s okay if you don’t find the one by your 40s. people can find someone in their teens and get married in their 20s, then divorce a year later. you could find someone in your 30s or 40s and spend the rest of your life with them. love

We are both "back up plans" but aren't married yet. The.. 'wait for someone to surprise you' is exactly what happened. It's like we are made for each other. I couldn't even imagine this was possible
I have a pact with my best friend that if we are 35 and dont have anyone nor any kids we will have a kid together , and each of us live close by but have our own dating life.
We know we are perfect parenting couple for eachother but have no sexual attraction.
I sincerely think that this is the best way to have a kid , with someone you would trust your life without doubting it , and not restricting your dating life , why force a relationship that has no way of working out just to have a kid

Does it count if we only made it "official" for business reasons? Together four years, neither of us looking to get married but making it legal was a solution to a lot of practical business things we were trying to do. Without a lot of financial and legal complications, especially insurance, we'd have continued on as we were: solidly together but not married.
Edit to clarify: together four years before we got married; married now for six years.

I know someone who married (well, wedding would've been in May, but it's been postponed due to the pandemic, so still engaged-ish) her college roommate because her number 1 choice was taken by her younger sister (their wedding also postponed from April). And... the four of them live together now. Oh, yeah, while she does have a spark between her and her wife-to-be, both of them still prefer her sister's wife-to-be, so it's more of a polyamorous/harem situation.
Edit: oh, right, I forgot another friend (male this time), who made such a pact with one girl (Lyn, let's say) in early high school, maybe 15 years old, that they'd get married if they were single when the both turned 30. They'd known one another for a few years at that point, btw. Well, fast-forward six years, and Lyn got a husband and a little baby daughter. As such, he goes to a different friend (Mary) who'd given him the plan-b pact a year or so earlier, which he'd refused because he already had one. Then Mary came out as bi, okay, whatever. Twice as many people to choose from for her, lowering his chances. Then Lyn gets a divorce. Abusive husband, the works. So, they were all mid-late 20s, he's 27, they're 28.
He calls both of them in for a meeting, opens with "I have no idea what to do here, I didn't actually expect that I'd end up as the 30 year old virgin. Now, two pacts are in front of me, and I can only fulfill one at most" Lyn responded with "uhh... you know why I got a divorce, right? My ex was abusive, but it started when I came out as a lesbian. Sorry, not really interested. Go for it with Mary"
Then, two weeks later, Mary announced that she'd found a partner she just clicked with. Lyn. A bit over a year later, on HIS birthday, they got married.

@9:19 She only held you up 6 months. You got off easy. I went almost two years. She thought I had money since I was a "1/3 owner in a retail store". She wanted half of my third. I finally told the attorney to offer her my stock as it was not marketable to anyone but my brother or father. She didn't want that. The straw that broke the camel's back was that she needed to renew the tags on her car which was in my name. I refused to do it until we were divorced. Game set match and that is how the deed was done. She did sneak over to the house and take a $500 microwave back when microwaves were just coming on the market. That was a long time ago.
I was engaged rather briefly before the age of 18 to my first serious bf. Ended it rather quickly due to parental pressure. Didn’t find current/first actual hubby until 14 years later. Found out first bf has gotten in tons of trouble and went down a life path that makes me shudder, so better that never happened.
This video is like a train engineer school for the blind. Sooooo many train wrecks getting set up & just waiting to happen.... and they don't even see them coming.

If you are having second thoughts about committing yourself to your best friend, the only person in the world that you could literally spend every single day with and still enjoy their company even on the bad days. Don't think they will stick around forever while you decide if you'll find someone better or more attractive. You spoil that person because you will ALWAY have the regret of losing your best friend, no matter how unbelievable you might end with. You WILL miss your best friend for the rest of your life
Is it really that important to get married?
It depends who you ask.
Some people that make a back up plan do it for different reasons.
Some do not want to grow old.
Some do it because of what society will think of them.
And depending where you live, so do it because financially it makes sense to do certain things as a married couple.
It sounds like when you're not hopelessly I love with the person you actually make it work(?) The stories that people just "choose" their partner sound happier and more mature.

Don’t like the idea of marriage pacts. Never have. However, my best friend and old college roommate have joked about us buying a house together if anything ever happens to her husband. We’re both used to rooming together plus it would help ease any financial strain if we split the cost of utilities. But I hope I don’t have to think about any of that for a long long time as her husband is also my friend too. 😬

Fundamentalist. It has a negative connotation, especially with a religion in front of it. Christian fundamentalist, Islamic fundamentalist, etc. Think, like, David Koresh Christian cults with their own compound and militia trying to overthrow the government, or those weird culty towns out in the middle of nowhere in Utah. Or even the movie "Carrie"... think of Carrie's mother.

it seems like a lot of people make those marriage pacts. I made one with this girl on the agreement that we are both single at 30. we're both in relationships right now and I'm not romantically interested in her, but I think it would still work out if we ended up getting married at 30
