- In this video I bring you 5 writing tips by Ernest Hemingway (author of The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms) from two separate works, Monologue to the Maestro: A High Seas Letter and With Hemingway: A Year in Key West and Cuba.
I rarely ever like youtube videos due to just forgetting about it. however, i never forget to do so when it comes to your content. It is short, very informative, and is perfectly balanced. that's a skill to be admired and acknowledged.
Glad you’re back.
1. Writers are readers.
This one is widely understood but I first learned it in Stephen King’s, “On Writing.” It’s important to immerse yourself in more elegant language than you witness in day to day life.
2. I took many writing courses in college and the very best piece of advice I received was, “you have to get your ass in the writing chair.”
Thinking about your story is not writing. Getting ready to write is not writing. Carving out time to write is not writing. Only writing is writing. And for a story to be written, writing needs to be done.
Love this bro. That first point is brilliant. I've yet to read that one from Stephen King.
I would never touch Stephen King‘s genre with a 10 foot pole. However, after reading his critiques on writing, I too agree that that is a good body of work.
Bruh this video is so straight and to the point. I love it.
Such great videos from this channel! You really got something special going:)
PS. I freakin love The old man and the sea by Hemingway. That book reads like a river, you flow with every detail, it´s a real pleasure.
Thank you, @wiseturtule. I appreciate the support.
I needed this, thank you
Meanwhile: entire sites on copying his style lol
I had an interesting revelation while watching this video, but I think my comment was deleted.
There is no doubt your videos are good, but i think your titles sometimes dont keep up with the same quality, thus extreemly low viewcount for such a great video, i have a few tips if you care
Thank you. And for sure, how do you think it could be improved?
@@TurtleneckPhilosophy For starters i think theyre too long. Try to make them shorter, and while doing that make them more intriguing, leaving the viewer more curious, forcing them to click. 2nd, dont repeat title and thumbnail. I see you do this mostly for names, where you have ernest hemingway in both the title and thumbnail. Have the name only in the thumbnail, making the title even shorter and easier to read. Some people dont care about the person, and only the writing tips, others care abput the person more than the tips. Having the name in the title will make it too long for people that dont care about him to read. 3rd, make the titles more interesting. This is a bad example, but instead of writing "5 writing tips from Ernest Hemingway", write "The 5 Rules Of Writing", this ones bat, but "God of writing spoils the 5 writing rules", or "Change this to write like the pros". 4th, dont have "writing advice" in the thumbnail, people dont want advice, people want a big change or something that will evolve them, not something simple like advice. So maybe write instead "Writing exploits" or some shit idk. Although, your channel is a bit more philosofical and stuff, maybe you dont want to become that typa channel thats like "NEVER do THIS or SPONGEBOB WILL COME AT YOU AT 3AM". Cuz the stuff im telling you is more on that side, if that doesnt feel like you then ignore what im saying. Anyways, great video, and also title and thumbnail!
Made some changes that (I think) reflect your feedback. Thank you :) @@ninopino12
@@TurtleneckPhilosophy im very glad you found value in my tips! The thumbnail in my opinion got a big improvement, and title looks short and clean! Although, the title is bugging me a little. I personally would do "The 5 Writing Rules | Ernest Hemingway". This because people will think "hmm so theres 5 rules, how could i have missed this! What if i am not following these rules?". Since saying "The" makes it seem like "The Rules", instead of just some rules. And saying "Rules" makes them seem more important and more like writing pillars that everyone should know, cuz theyre rules after all. Saying tips for me doesnt have the same pulling force. If you feel like people will say its clickbait, cuz you say "tips" in the video, but "rules" in the title, dont worry. Noone will notice, and noone will find it odd either. Because this miniscule level of clickbait is in every single video, and is unfortunately almost necessary. Here i go yapping again! You probably know more about youtube than me, so follow your heart and take my tips with a pinch of salt. If you like your title, thumbnail, or video (which are all amazing), then all power to you, dont let me change that opinion!
@@ninopino12 We'll give it a go. Thanks for all the input :)
