This series of you trying some writer's routine must never end! I just love it! I feel like your videos are so important cause they show that literature is a way of living, something we can incorporate in every part of life. it makes it glorious! And melancholic...
You know you’ve hit on something grand when everyone who comments is clearly inspired, or clearly wants to be just like you, or to reveal that they are already. I sense a habit coming on.
i love the whole "building excitement for the next day" part of this process. i'd never thought of it before but if you write that early in the morning, i'm sure you not only have lots of time to build excitement for the next day, but you also have a whole day to organically brainstorm/daydream about what happens next
9:35 it's so interesting hearing you talk about being a morning person like this because i say the same thing about being a night owl, i love how everyone is asleep and at peace and i'm awake, it's like i'm the only one there
I agree. In the morning, the world is waking up, cars, people with dogs. Maybe in the old world, the one Hemingway inhabited, this would work, but at night, the world is descending into quiet which will go on for hours. This is better for me.
everytime Lady Dakota posts, the sun shines brighter and the air becomes more breathable. her videos are really just so refreshing I look forward to them every week!
Why don’t we run away as soulmates must? the chugging of our chests with every leap; the jolting muscles make our clothes untucked. The judging wedding guests too shocked to speak. Isn’t that what we’re made for anyway? Thy Kathy at the shattered window haunts; a hair you’d hate to push back into place because in flight was when it came undone. Before forced vows are through, stand, “I object!” Beyond this chapel barn, the world unrolls. I’d say we’re what the moors were meant to catch. The bride is shocked she’s freed; it’s time to go. Let’s storm the aisle ‘s lane prematurely. Why should we both forever hold our peace? .. a sonnet that I wrote, dedicated to a man who reached out to me after a breakup, and it's also inspired by Wuthering Heights.
lady dakota, i recently received your book for my birthday, as I’ve been wanting it ever since I first heard about it on your channel. You’ve undoubtedly heard this many times but it is so beautifully and meaningfully written and it almost makes me tear up. I am an avid young reader and writer, and have been on and off my whole short life. Your videos and book inspire me so much, and I don’t know if you’ll read this, but thank you. you are wonderful.
This was a wonderful video, so informative -- I learned to stop right before I know what I'm going to write next -- thank you, Dakota! With regard to your desire to grow with your art and not know really when to stop a piece, a professor I had last semester in a writing workshop/ seminar told us that you'll never "feel done/ready" and so to publish once you have a full piece all together that you think is pretty right on. You'll grow with your art as a whole, each novel or poem reflects a point or set of points along your journey and the next reflects those after. I love you, beautiful soul!
I magically found your channel today and I have to say I am in awe. I could have just simply not looked up your name; it was a matter of seconds, but I am so glad I did. The beauty you possess is unquantifiable, not only in the physical aspect (in which of course we all see how pretty you are) but also in the way you speak, your soft and comforting words, your bright smile, your taste in decoration, your clothing style, and even the music you choose for your videos. It truly feels like watching some movie set. This form of art of yours (the video production but also the art of life, at least what we see on the other side of the screen) is impeccable, in the visual matter but most importantly, in the quality of your being. I truly don´t know how to explain everything that I´m feeling... I am sure half of what I said didn´t even make sense, so a good summary of it would be: you are stunningly captivating
I've been hitting a lull on my thesis towards the end of writing it but this got me so inspired I ran upstairs to start writing for the day! I think that morning writing may help me get over the lull of bed rotting and scrolling in the morning and help me get started on the day
As a writer aspiring to get my work out, it would be so interesting to see the publishing process. Would you ever do a video about how you go about it?
I used to be a morning writer... and then I had kids. They're great, but wow do they sap you of energy. Now I write at the end of the day. Somehow, that's when I have my creative juices at their peak, but I recently went back to prose after about an eighteen year hiatus. Screenwriting is great, but it's also not as expressive, and it's really a blueprint for someone else to make into a work of art. At some point you will have to let your love (manuscript) go out into the world, but I do get that whole coming back and finding something new that you must change in the story. It's a blessing and a curse. Well, I'm off to try and wrap up draft 4 of my sci-fi novella. Good hunting, Dakota.
You could also try a completely different routine. Jack London was, in his day, the highest paid, most prolific author in the US and his most famous works were international sellers. For context, London grew up in poverty, lived a life of adventures from a young age, and mined those adventures for his stories. He made his living writing and had numerous rather expensive projects to support. As one who has always made a living writing, often for others as a journalist and non-fiction writer - not always getting to write my own projects - I understand London's context. His routine, like Hemingway's, was an early start on the day. He worked until he had written 1,000 words. That would be about 5 double-spaced typewritten pages. This routine probably won't suit your particular writing projects and lifestyle, but it would be a very different viewpoint for your writing day and might exercise completely different writing muscles.
Odd question, the black spined book on the left at 3:18 - Byzantine to Renaissance. Is that this book 'Byzantine to Renaissance: Chalkokondyles' Classical Odyssey Janet R Ollie'?
"An interviewer once asked ERNEST HEMINGWAY, "Isn't there any one essential ingredient you can identify which makes a great writer?" Hemingway replied, "Yes, there is. In order to be a great writer, A PERSON MUST HAVE A BUILT-IN SHOCK-PROOF, CRAP DETECTOR." And that's what my idea of true education is. THE CHILDREN SHOULD BE TRAINED, DISCIPLINED, SO THAT THEY CAN DETECT CRAP. A really intelligent person is a CRAP DETECTOR. He immediately knows, the moment he says something, whether it is significant or just holy cow dung."
Thanks for this video and love the chat around editing methods as that is one part of writing I don't like but is essential and I always struggle with.
This was excellent. Have you read much Katherine Anne Porter? She is my favorite. Specifically Ship Of Fools. Would love to see a good video on Porter if you ever have the time! Cheers Dakota
Dakota I watch a lot of videos with writing advice etc, but I really really enjoyed yours. I love the jazz music in the background, it takes it to a whole other level. I notice you have a Vitruvian Man by Da Vinci above your desk. Very cool. I look forward to seeing more of your TH-cams and hope that perhaps one day we can work together or even have coffee.
I'm the same with the morning writing thing. I love getting up nice and early and like hemmingway said, the peace and isolation of the mornings Is something I really find so inspiring. However I only write for a few hours, might try taking advantage of that flow state for longer. ANYWAY, all this to say, it's a lovely thing to start figuiring out your creative routine and when everything just clicks and works well it's so satisfying.
thank you for sharing your beautiful experience with us dakota, i myself enjoy writing when i have freedom and not just writing because of my routine, but it sometimes makes me fall behind, and i am going to make some habits and routines to prevent this from happening.
Would you ever do a video about how you get your ideas? I have so many things I want to talk about but no story ideas to talk about those things through.
I found out just recently my great-grandpa used to go fishing with Hemingway when he lived in Cuba. They were neighbors. He even gave my grandma a nickname. I can’t imagine what kind of conversations they may have had. It’s something I think about almost every night.
My writing routine: 35 minute walk after dinner to clear my mind. Then, a low dose CBD/THC gummy (legal in 🇺🇸), I turn on an amazing playlist around 9pm and write until 1AM. Bliss.
I was expecting some of that in this! Capped off w/ a Death in the Afternoon…in the afternoon. I thought at 6 am she’d be typing standing up at a tall dresser, wearing ol timey trousers n suspenders (undershirt of course), w/ a half empty glass of whiskey, and half smoked cigar smoldering in an ashtray.
He's one of the most sincere writers you can think of not because he's the most professional or because he's got a bunch of Pulitzers. It's because he throws 120% of his authentic self into everything, including the whole "gonzo phase" that made him famous. Everybody seems to forget the "genius" part of his "manic genius", but he definitely had a self awareness that seems like he's lived a thousand lifetimes, but in reality, he's had a million experiences that shaped a more complete worldview in his journalism days than most people ever hope to have in their entire lives.
Haha. Catholicism for dummies! Love it. If you want to know more I highly recommend these podcasts: The Catechism in a year (and also The Bible in a year) with Fr. Mike Schmitz.
I love your channel, videos, and your general vibe so much. You are the one person I always come back to when I need to "feel" the world a little more. When I need inspiration and cherry. Thank you lady Dakota
For what it's worth - for this technique , I'd be up with the dawn , in a beautiful rural environment like Guatamala or Cuba or Catalan , I would write longhand not on a lap top - it's a purer energy and I'd only do it 3 or 4 times a week from 5.30 am to 11 am . That's what I would do , for what it's worth .
Yo, you should get a riser for your MacBook. That way, you don’t have to lean over it for so long. Youll get neck aches writing for long periods like that. Cheers!🎉
I’ve always found it so interesting how people’s minds work differently. I couldn’t ever imagine writing in the morning, only at night!
I don't know if it's available online, but I feel like Sylvia Plath's writing routine would be really interesting if you'd be interested in that
YESSS i adore her
How was sylvia plath's writing routine?
Lol her method is just suicide

lmaoooooooo
I've been hitting a lull on my thesis towards the end of writing it but this got me so inspired I ran upstairs to start writing for the day! I think that morning writing may help me get over the lull of bed rotting and scrolling in the morning and help me get started on the day
I just finished reading Paradise Rot, due to you repeatedly recommending it, and omg it’s so good! So glad I picked it up🙌

I love your longer hair and the way you styled it - very pretty. ❤️🩹
Odd question, the black spined book on the left at 3:18 - Byzantine to Renaissance. Is that this book 'Byzantine to Renaissance: Chalkokondyles' Classical Odyssey Janet R Ollie'?
out of topic but thank you for helping me to safely handle my vulnerability with my writing, love you & your work xxx

I write really well specifically after 9:30 at night. Just for an hour I become insanely creative.
I love your energy, it feels like you're speaking right to me.
this was amazing!!! thank you angel dakota... also i feel like this writing routine could work for academic work as well...
I am watching a lot of these writing routine videos, and yours is one of the best.
Try Flaubert or Balzac one day (they really went all out).
Enjoyable to hear your assessment of the routine. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for this video and love the chat around editing methods as that is one part of writing I don't like but is essential and I always struggle with.

Wish I could do this. Maybe on the weekends. But I'm at work by 8 a.m. each day :(

Please try Erich Maria Remarque’s routine next time 🙏
A delightful experience to join... this video.
I'm a night person. My brain doesn't function well before noon. Otherwise I would love to try Hemingway or Woolf's routines.
Try Joan Didion’s routine! I think you’ll like it!
He said “write drunk, edit sober”
"i just feel good right now. Maybe it was the coffee. Maybe it was the sun." AHHHHHH
i think it's about balance and finding what works for you.
i love you so so much

I thought this was going to involve getting on the drink early on, like the regulars at 'spoonies. Do Winston Churchill next, Dakota.
do Charles Bukowski next and dont skip the drinking and smoking
I was expecting some of that in this! Capped off w/ a Death in the Afternoon…in the afternoon.
I thought at 6 am she’d be typing standing up at a tall dresser, wearing ol timey trousers n suspenders (undershirt of course), w/ a half empty glass of whiskey, and half smoked cigar smoldering in an ashtray.
You should try Hunter S. Thompson's writing routine next x

I had many years where I had a routine. Now, I just write every day, no matter what time or where. That's what happens if you do it enough.
I know why he typed standing up: cats.
