I've seen a U.S. Magnet Fisher have a weight attached to a D-clip by approximately a foot of Rope. This Home-made Gear/Gadget was separate from the actual Magnet Fishing Rope. That way if the Magnet got stuck, such as Yours did, the Weight could just be clipped Onto the Fishing Rope and turned Loose to Slide Down the Rope, Hopefully pulling the Magnet Free.
D-clip may also be called carabiner.
Glad to see that You was able to retrieve your Magnet.
