Ethics monitors our actions even before the act is committed or as a call of conscience, after the action is committed. It helps us understand the consequences of an action, while it is still a thought. Ethics shape the thought process, behavioural patterns by dictating values, virtues, right and wrong behaviour. It helps one to become a better human being.
While laws, inhibits unethical action and punishes it. It doesn’t shape the personality or behaviour directly. It monitors, keeps a check and punishes. Not every unethical act comes under the scrutiny of law unless/until it is noticed and reported.
Secondly, not every unethical act has a law framed to punish it.
There might be situations/systems which don’t have laws framed to monitor them, but universal values and ethics can act as a guide in making the right choices and course of action.
Eg: Social media is a very recent tool for which society didn’t have the rules framed readily. Lack of ethical and moral responsibility in designing it has made it an addictive platform leading to consequences like teenage suicides, mental health issues etc. If the designer had been morally responsible the scenario would have been different.
So, there is need for ethics even when there is law, to acts as a tool for self introspection, while the action is still a thought. And to guide us in areas where law doesn’t have a say.

    I've a doubt.
On the 3rd of July there was this article on the Hindu about challenges and proposed solutions for regulating Generative AI.
Can I quote this as an example in law vs ethics?
Indian copyright act protects human generated works/content on the internet and not AI generated work.
This is a debate that was mentioned in the article if existing copyright laws should be updated.
Also Internet governance often protects intermediaries and not AI like chatGPT. There should be similar protections.
ethical implication being: there’s a question of fairness in recognizing and rewarding the creative contributions of AI systems. Should there be some form of acknowledgment or benefit to the creators of the AI or the organizations using it?
    Also,
not recognizing AI-generated works might stifle innovation in the field of generative AI and its potential benefits.
Just wanted to confirm if I'm thinking in the right direction.

It is an issue on which scholars and academicians differ quite a lot. Some use them interchangeably while others distinguish between the two.
Explaining it here will not be possible…so I am giving you a link to read
      www.britannica.com/story/whats-the-difference-between-morality-and-ethics
If you need more you can the entry on Ethics by Peter Singer (one of the best philosophers and ethicist)

I have a question regarding the evolution of ethics over time. For instance, consider a war-mongering tribe that regards killing in war or looting a city as sacred and morally justified. If this tribe undergoes a transformation over time and begins to view killing as wrong, does this indicate that their ethical framework has changed? How do ethics evolve in such contexts over time? If the same change happens in future in the name of differences like race religion and so on. will that make ethics wrong overtime?

    • @ethics101
      @ethics101  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Ethics evolves with time and as social norms and cultural paradigms change our collective sense of right and wrong also undergoes a change. That’s why some ethicists consider ethics to be relative. And, this school is called ethical relativism.
Thanks for the thoughtful and interesting question.

Why do we need ethics when there is law ?
We need ethics in law beacuse in India there is many areas where ethics is requires.
Ex . In Nata pratha , girls from certain communities are sold by their families , often documented on stamp papers.
Internationally, there is issue of ethics with law . Ex burkha is compulsory for Muslim women in Saudi Arabia while in France it is an illegal.

Laws cannot guide or punish each and every action, the lacuna should be filled with ethics. ie. Both should complement each other.
Sometimes, there are many loopholes in the law and most of the time there are many ways out of legal scrutiny. There comes the role of ethics..
