Very nice looking bowl Gary 👍. Turning wet wood is a pleasure, and you never know what the end result will be. Betty is going to love it. Thanks for sharing and take care friend 😊.
I didn't realize that it was green wood when you started, but I was thinking you were getting some very healthy shavings off of that. nd who expected it to warp that far? What a great distortion and no cracking. Well done, Gary!
Thank you Jay. Yes she had just had the tree cut down so it was about as wet as it could get. Funny thing it did not spray me like most wet wood do. Sure was fun to turn though. Thanks for watching, Gary
Well, you never can tell what will happen! Warping adds to the character and authenticity of the bowl in my opinion; it showcases the 'handmade' element, each one is different. Lovely job, Gary.
Thank you David. Many people would not realize the bowl can change it shape a lot when turned green. Even a dry piece of wood can move around some. I find it fun to see what it will do. Thanks for watching, Gary
Every once in a while you just have to turn a piece of wood that still has moisture in it. It's definitely fun to watch them warp into something different than what you expected. Happy turning my friend 😊
Absolutely brilliant Gary, I just love your attention to detail and the thrill you received when it warped. Thank you for making this for Nurse Betty (aka Mom), much appreciated. 🙂

As you were working on it, something about the way the light hit the wood made me think it was going to warp. I'm glad you got what you were going for. Very nice.
Garry, that turned out really nice buddy, I do like to turn Oak I think it is a nice wood and you can get a really lovely finish to it as well, well done.
I once turn almost everything green, since all of my bowl blanks are from trees cut during the last year or so. I’m not even really sure what turning dry wood would feel like. Frankly I love the warping like you got, it’s fun to see how the wood reacts. As long as it doesn’t destroy itself….😂
Thank you Jim. I enjoy turning fresh cut wood as well. I guess I enjoy turning about anything. I had a piece of Madrone that tore itself in half and it seemed as dry as can be. You just never know. Thanks for watching, Gary
Well, I finally got to watch this all the way through. Watching this video was interrupted by one of my granddaughters bringing me a birthday present. LOL. Love the bowl. That is neat how it warped. Haave a good week.
Turned out very interesting Gary. It's always interesting to see how green wood will move, this one really came out nicely. I'm sure your friend will appreciate it.
Thanks Mark. We are planning on getting it to her this Monday. When I got the wood from her I told it can take a long long time for this wood to dry. All the time planning on doing this one. Sure happy it worked out. Gary
That's a really cool bowl. I love the way it dried into an oval. Lucky it didn't crack! I saw saw the face and to me it looks like some sort of reptilian dragon! Great work and I'm sure your friend will cherish it.
Yup Gary there's definitely someone looking at me from inside the bowl. It's a cracking big bowl & the natural warping gave it a neat shape. A perfect big salad or fruit bowl in my opinion. Hope your well on your way to full fitness by now but just take it easy. Keep well & stay safe 👍🏴
It's so much fun watching the curls come off of green wood and seeing them pile up on your arms. You did a really nice job preparing and turning this piece, Gary! Hard to predict or imagine a better shape than the oval you got from this one, through consistent thickness and patience. Really cool! A food safe finish and this piece is ready to make Betty a very happy lady! Well done, my friend, keep'em coming! 😀 Phil
Thank you very much Phil. I was not sure how oak would react but I was happy to see the warp the next morning. Was hoping to get it to her this weekend. We have been swamped with other things. All good things. Tonight is graduation for our grandson who went to the same high school I did. Problem is it is outside and it is raining. But it is Portland where we do not tan. We rust lol. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thanks Carl. Green wood is fun to turn. As long as I do a once turned. I do not like turning one and putting it away for months. Thanks for watching, Gary
How cool is it that it dried and warped so proportionately. I could see the face in it very clearly. Pareidololia is the name for seeing faces in inanimate objects. If you google it it explains it out better. Keep on keeping on your work is awesome.
Thank you very much Dale. And thanks for telling me about . Pareidololia . I like learning something new and you just helped me with todays new thing. Thanks for watching, Gary
Great little bowl Gary i figured it would elongate on the grain but i think it makes for a more interesting piece, i cored some oak bowls a while back and they have warped beyond saving.
Could never turn a bowl like that. It is really unique. It would be hard to explain to a novice how it was turned. I really like it. Thanks for showing
Gary, I’m sure Betty will love this beautiful bowl. The way it warped and the grain pattern shimmer is awesome. I enjoyed seeing the long ribbons coming off the wet oak
Thank you Skip. Looking forward to getting it to her. Wanted to be sure it was stable and it is. I enjoyed those long ribbons myself. Lots of fun. Gary
Good morning, Gary. Wow, 58%. I was holding my breath thinking it may crack. The warp is very cool and adds to the hand made original character. Very nice. See ya next time, Brother.
Thank you Ray. I just did not want to wait to make our friend something from her tree. I told her it can take years for a blank to dry. I did not tell here there is other ways to get it done LOL! So with everything going on wth me I lost a lot of weight. Enough that I actuall was able to put my uniform on and helped bring the flag into church for Memorial Day in memory of all my brothers we lost. Take care my Brother!

Thanks Scott. It sure was a surprise to me. I figured it might keep on going but it stopped where it was. That was a good thing for sure. Thanks for watching, Gary
Awesome wavy bowl Gary ! A real fine job . I sure wish I could get my hands on more Oak as I am almost out . I do have Maple and lots of Cherry . In fact I have a Cherry trunk that is about 3' long and a good 20-24" across . Great job Gary . We hope you have a grand weekend .
Thank you very much Jon. The neighbors lost 2 oak trees in the ice and wind storm we had earlier this year We will be very busy tomorrow and Sunday. Better get out in the shop and work on what I started LOL Gary
I bought some of that firewood they sell at grocery stores , an made a bowl out of it , made a pretty bowl but it really warped . Everybody liked it because it was different.
That blank had some awesome looking grain at the begining of the video. The fruit bearing trees, like oak, pecan or hickory are very unstable, I have found out. I've tried to make a few matched grain doors for cabinets. It always moves on me. You did a great job on the bowl, Gary. Note that I didn't call you Phil this time. Lol.
Well thank you very much Pete LOL...Paul. I have built a lot of furniture from Oak. All from kiln dried lumber. I have an Oak dining table and an Oak Roll Top Desk I made about 50 years ago. Both still in use. We are burned out on Oak furniture. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you Andy! Always nice when the wood helps you get a shape. Sure happy it did because I was hoping for something like this. Take care my friend, Gary
That turned out nice Gary. Larry "The Wood Whirler" had a video a while back on using a food dehydrator to speed up the drying process and I tried it maybe 4-5 times now and it seems to work pretty well.
Thank David. When I saw Larry do it he got a lot of cracking. I used Rick from Rick Turns card board box and computer fan. Works like a charm. But for turning something thin like this you do not need anything . Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you Billy. The fact it did not start going out of round on the lathe I was guessing I would not get much if any warp. I guessed wrong which made me happy. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thanks Josh. I think you can have some control over warping but never tried. I bet if you wrapped rubber bands around it but then again it might just blow up. Thanks for watching, Gary
I love the way it turned out. I have access to a lot of oak. I like turning it but have to sharpen the tools so many times during the turning. Thanks for sharing Gary
Nice turning from green wood. I look forward to getting g back to my lathe turning wood. I was thinking if I turned some green wood, I might try using a combination of wood shavings and using paper from shredded documents to dry the wood. I don't know if that will work or not, but will give it a try.
Thanks John. Yes a paper bag filled with the shavings will help it dry without cracking. Most of the time you would be doing a 10% walls for using the sawdust and the bag. In my case I wanted it to warp.
I’ve seen a Vicmarc lathe designed so that you can sit down and turn 🤣. What a great turning with a really even warping. I’ve always been sceptical of turning wet wood due to the uneven warping that can happen. Intentionally or not what you created has given me food for thought . I’ve access to quite a lot of freshly cut logs next week. You cut with the pith line directly in the midddle of the log and went fairly thin. Then covered bowl with shavings o’nite. I wish you had shown more of your sanding and finishing with more detailed descriptions. Thank you very much for sharing Gary. A truly inspiring and amazing turning.
Thank you Greg. I have a stool in back of me. Used it when my ankle was healing. But not when I was turning it was just for a short rest. Sanding surprised me so I decided to sand it the whole way to 400. I will show the buffing off the lathe the next time I do it. But it is the same other than holding the piece down by hand. Happy you enjoyed the video. Gary
Hi Gary. I like turning wet wood. I think the shapes you end up with often are very interesting. If I can get the wood sealed and finished quickly while on the lathe, the movement is minimized and the shapes are a lot more subtle. I’m always surprised when I get very little movement for some reason. We don’t seem to have many oak trees around here, so I’ve never had a chance to turn it. Yours looks like a fun bowl….popcorn for sure!! Cheers,Rick
Thank you Rick. During the ice and wind storm we had the neighbors had on Oak tree fall on their house and then cut another on down. Years ago we took one down because it was lifting our driveway. I got burned out making a lot of oak furniture and cabinets years ago when it was the rage. Turning a piece was fun. Thanks for watching, Gary
Football bowl: Snack/popcorn bowl for watching TV/Videos, especially if there is a sports enthusiast in Betty’s house! Pretty sure she will be thrilled with the unique shape. Great combination of you working with the wood (not against) to make it happen.
Great Bowl. I was wondering all through the video why you were not going to rough turn the bowl ,and then let it sit until it was dry enough to finish turn. Got my answer you wanted it to warp. That warping added to the bowls character!! Great choice !!!
Thank you very much John. I have only rough turned. It also tends to break up my interest in the bowl to have to come back months later. I suppose if I was selling it might be another story. Happy you liked this one. Gary
Well Papa that did warp didn't it, great finish as always, yes long neck , mouth eyes. Amazing what we see in the grain at times. How's the leg bearing up now.
Thank you Gary. It is cool seeing those faces. The leg is doing good but had a few other things slow me down but doing pretty good right now. Thanks for asking, Gary
Very nice! It did not warp as much as I thought it would. Had I done that, I would had done a twice turned bowl. (Turn a thick heavy bowl, dry it out and then a finished bowl) but the way you did it was awesome. Thank you and keep the videos coming.
That looks great. A perfect example of letting nature give you something better. This looked deep enough that you could've gotten a smaller bowl from this. Did you think about it?
Thank you John. Give nature a chance and you can get some nice surprises. I do not have a coring system and very seldom have a use for one. I suppose I would use one if one of those companies wanted me to test one out LOL. At least I save this piece from being firewood is how I look at it. And the shavings go on my wife's flower garden.
What a special piece of oak to have 58 percent moisture, and warp so little. Also, there does seem to be a correlation between age and tiredness 😅. Pace yourself, and let your body tell you when it’s time to call it a day.
THANK YOU GARY.. Seem like not to many folks turn green wood? It is nice to see some Oak with zero cracks (I guess the benefits of green turning?) I like this technique of making an oval bowl on your lathe. So now thinking how would this technique work if you made a dizzy bowl out of all green wood?... Gary I had trouble seeing the face but I guess that's because I do not have your imagination (I also can't see the man in the moon either, ha) Until next time Gary... TM
Thanks TM. The main problem with warping a dizzy bowl is the glue would not hold very good on wet wood but I like the idea. I very seldom see the faces till I pick it up to show at the end. Then they seem to pop right out. See ya later, Gary
@@ThePapa1947 Gee Gary, I am still thinking about that. Having a warped dizzy bowl would create a double dizzy, ha??? That would really take the dizzy bowl to it's next level of craziness creating a 3-D dizzy?... Oh My Gosh... What if a small experimental greenwood dizzy bowl using super glue? (I know "calm it down Tuffy")
Gary, when you get a piece of wood that’s that moist once you cut it down like you’re doing and get the bowl where you like it how much does that reduce the water content in the bowl after it is done spinning?
Hi Ken. I find when I get it that thin it sands like a dry piece of wood. I am sure there is a little moister in it but not very much. With Apple I like to make them even thinner. They really warp. I have a real cool one that my wife claimed so I may have to find some fresh cut Apple so I can have one LOL. Thanks for watching, Gary
No rush at all. The plan was to get it to warp and it did. I have done a few twice turned bowls. I just do not like turning something and going back to it months later. I suppose if I was into selling I would do twice turned a lot. Thanks for watching, Gary

Thank you Billy. The fact it did not start going out of round on the lathe I was guessing I would not get much if any warp.
I guessed wrong which made me happy.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Cool warping! Nicely done, Gary
Thanks Josh. I think you can have some control over warping but never tried. I bet if you wrapped rubber bands around it but then again it might just blow up.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Hi Gary. Beautiful bowl. 😊😊
Thanks so much Rob!
That's a beautiful oak bowl.
Thank you James happy you liked it.
Gary
I love the way it turned out. I have access to a lot of oak. I like turning it but have to sharpen the tools so many times during the turning. Thanks for sharing Gary
Thank you Charles. Well one thing about turning it wet it turns pretty easy.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Its beautiful i would like to its shape in 6 months , i purposely turn wet wood to see the rresults when dried 👏👏👏👏
Thank you Vini!
I appreciate you watching,
Gary
Gary
I can smell the popcorn now! Nice piece, Gary.
Thanks so much. Just about the right amount of popcorn as well.
Gary
Looks fantastic Gary.
Thank you Arthur I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Very cool bowl. I was very surprised how much it moved. Looks awesome. Keep up the amazing work. 👽
Thank you very much. I was surprised as well. It had not really moved much while turning it. Nice surprise the next morning.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Great little bowl.
Thank you Doug I appreciate you watching.
Gary
Football bowl: Snack/popcorn bowl for watching TV/Videos, especially if there is a sports enthusiast in Betty’s house! Pretty sure she will be thrilled with the unique shape. Great combination of you working with the wood (not against) to make it happen.
Thanks Valerie. Not sure if she likes sports or popcorn. But heck eveyone loves popcorn.
Thanks for watching and commenting,
Gary
@ThePapa1947 I think it's illegal in several states to not like popcorn lol.
@@williamellis8993 well it sure should be ,🙃🤣
very interesting exact process Ive been doing lately with Cherry, let it dry finish the bottom.
Cool Rodney. Lots of fun to see how it turns out.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That turned out very nice Gary Lady Betty will be over the moon with it thankyou for sharing Gary it was a pleasure to watch
Thank you Ronnie. I am looking forward to getting it to her. Busy this weekend up hope we can this coming Monday.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Great looking bowl
Thank you Bobby I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Hi Gary. I love your work and appreciate you taking the time to share your expertise 🌞
Thanks so much Ray.. And I enjoy turning and sharing.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Thanks for asking,
Gary
looks really nice
Thank you Lynda. Our friend Betty really loves it.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Very nice! It did not warp as much as I thought it would. Had I done that, I would had done a twice turned bowl. (Turn a thick heavy bowl, dry it out and then a finished bowl) but the way you did it was awesome. Thank you and keep the videos coming.
Thanks Randy. Twice turn is another option but I wanted it to warp. Our friend will like the looks of this one.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That looks amazing.
Thank you very much Mark.
Take care,
Gary
Love it. Great job.
Thank you Doug!
Good work
Thanks Curtis. I appreciate you watching.
Gary
Really pretty
Thank you Joann and thanks for watching,
Gary
Nice bowl...love the warping!
Thanks Carol! I actually did not expect it to warp like it did. Normally I can see it happening before I am done turning it.
Sure happy it did!
Gary
What a special piece of oak to have 58 percent moisture, and warp so little. Also, there does seem to be a correlation between age and tiredness 😅.
Pace yourself, and let your body tell you when it’s time to call it a day.
Thanks Bob. Have not had a chance to get it to our friend but will soon,
For sure takes awhile to get back to full speed.
Take care my friend,
Gary
Not bad
Thank you Frank and thanks for watching,
Gary
It's amazing
Thanks so much grambear8!
Gary
I love it!
Thank you Louis!
Gary
See ya later,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 Gee Gary, I am still thinking about that. Having a warped dizzy bowl would create a double dizzy, ha??? That would really take the dizzy bowl to it's next level of craziness creating a 3-D dizzy?... Oh My Gosh... What if a small experimental greenwood dizzy bowl using super glue? (I know "calm it down Tuffy")
not bad l like it
Thank you Delbert and thanks for watching,
Gary
Gary, when you get a piece of wood that’s that moist once you cut it down like you’re doing and get the bowl where you like it how much does that reduce the water content in the bowl after it is done spinning?
Hi Ken. I find when I get it that thin it sands like a dry piece of wood.
I am sure there is a little moister in it but not very much. With Apple I like to make them even thinner. They really warp. I have a real cool one that my wife claimed so I may have to find some fresh cut Apple so I can have one LOL.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Why you don’t turn the bowl twice ? What is the rush?
No rush at all. The plan was to get it to warp and it did.
I have done a few twice turned bowls. I just do not like turning something and going back to it months later. I suppose if I was into selling I would do twice turned a lot.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Hi Gary very beautiful and that face is creepy
Thank you Mike! I know the face I saw was very creepy.
Happy you liked the bowl and thanks for watching,
Gary
1st
Bingo!
The shape is chunky- sorry. There is a lot to have look at yt, books, Pinterest. The work is great though
Thanks. Not sure there are any books to let you know how much a green turning will warp. I like how this one warped.
Thanks for watching.
