      Nothing. Material things can
always be replaced if you really
need it again. But I prefer less.

I have enough clothes to clothe 10 people beautifully.some of them are over 15 years old. I don’t wear them. I don’t know why. I lose hours every week trying to organize my room.

Vanessa Green same. Accept I had to put my things in storage as there wasn’t room in my new place and I’m so worried that all my clothes may have been moth eaten and it’s causing me so much anxiety, so I’m trying to prepare myself for that.

Some family friends gave me an angel figurine at my grandmother's wake when I was 10. She was like a mom to me in many ways and losing her devistated me. Even as a child I went into a pretty deep depression. It still hurts badly and I'm 34. Before she died, she gave me a necklace which is actually more meaningful to me than the figurine. I contemplate getting rid of the figurine, but I don't know what to do with it. It has so much sadness attached to it that I can't imagine donating it and I can't imagine throwing it out either. It's significant, but I don't like it a ton and wish I knew what to do with it. Our family friends were very kind and saw how sad I was and I think they were trying to comfort me, so I feel bad getting rid of it for that reason too. Advise?

I agree with what you said about how the less you own, the less you want to own. That’s me!!! But It gets tough sometimes with certain items. Like ones that don’t serve a purpose but you want the because they look “cute” 😩

Where I get most stuck is: once I have decided what to let go of, I do not want to just throw it in the trash. Somehow I get overwhelmed by all the steps of figuring out new homes for things, taking a special trip to the electronics recycling center etc. In the past, I have ended up with the stuff to get rid of in piles in a closet waiting to go somewhere. It pains me how much as a U.S. cultural we mindlessly throw things away and mindlessly accumulate and I don't want to be contributing to that. My desire to be thoughtful and consider the impact of our garbage ends of paralyzing me from taking action at times.

This is what my family did: gently used clothes/shoes/toys and home goods to local shelter, decor to non-profit thrift shops. Trying to sell these items are not worth our time.

When I was 10, my great-grandmother this doll that wears a beautiful knit dress and hat. I wasn't ever very close with her, I only visited her once but she was nice to me. I always loved the doll and her dress. I used to pretend she had Lumpy Space Princess's voice and when my little sister and I were in the car on road trips I would pretend the doll was calling my sister and I would talk in her voice. We made up this whole personality for her and I even wrote out a complex story based on the doll that's good enough that I'm now considering turning into a book.
I still have the doll. It's not a glass doll or anything fancy, just a plastic fashion doll you can get at a craft store. Her dress is unique though, it was handmade. It was probably made with a pattern, but my great-grandmother made sure it included my favorite color, green. I always thought the doll was very pretty. Including the bulk of the dress, it's about the size of a baby doll, so it isn't very small.
I never "use" it, but it has been a decoration in my room for years and I stare at it all the time, praying that it isn't alive as it stares back at me with its shiny eyes.

My books. I go into convulsions just thinking about getting rid of them. Oh, and I still have some of my son's items, things he left when he died - deep-seated memories of happier times. But, I know there are so many other 'things' that I can let go of, so I will start with them Thank you for this inspiring video. I'll give it an honest go.

You are one of my inspirations for my new lifestyle. I got rid of everything. Just two bags. I’m typing this from a gorgeous airbandb, the idea of having to buy a bed or a cupboard fills me with sadness. Being brave to get rid our crap really is freeing. The media is strong though. They constantly push you to buy, every now and then I slip into brain space where I want a fancy car ...I don’t, my awful car works perfectly.ranted on a bit there. I blame the media telling us we need stuff,

Really good video content here !! as a minimalist I feel that kind of freedom and peacefulness that is derived from a life that is not full of clutter. The idea is to use all things that are owned, and be liberated to actually enjoy life itself. Thanks so much for sharing your experiences and journey :-)

Books. Photographs. Things other family members shoved onto me bec they were indecisive, to hold onto it to honor--them. (Messed up of ME I know. I've been changing--but it's taken yrs to break the habit of accepting responsibility for their items.). Literally 2500+ books from my mom-in-law (2005-06), some in poor condition, plus our fam of 5 had about 2800-3000 of our own books. Total in 2009= 5500-5800? Bookcases in almost every room & hallway. We do love and read books. I was too protective of mom-in-law's feelings, at the expense of my own, I couldn't let go of her books. I wasted hours buying bookcases, painting them, organizing shelves of books. In 2006, we were broke & I sold 2 bags of her books that she hadn't looked at or asked about in yrs and sold a series. She got very angry at me. Very, scary, angry. So I made a decision 2009, to "read through" the library, starting w/our books, not hers. She had kept 2 huge storage units for 10 yrs and one in her basement--some of these books came from the units when my husband closed them w/her (2005), in addition to books all over her apt. I tackled our books first, but learned by 2014, she never, ever asked about hers since the anger outburst (2005), so out went the moldy ones, water damaged ones and I dropped off bags to her apt of the ones in good condition (very few actually). By 2022, I de-cluttered down to @325, including cook-books and yearbooks. It was hard, but my fam and I LOVE the result. And we still read! Every day/night.

I lived in Montréal, Canada with my family for four years (2006-2010, I was 10-14 years old). This was a very emotional and intense time and it is hard for me to let go of material memories from this time. Something else are some leftover toys and lots of stuffed animals from my childhood. They remind me of the security I had back then and I‘ve been keeping them for years. I am now almost 23 years old and I still feel like I can‘t let go of them.
Amazing video by the way, I am feeling that I am starting to share this mindset of minimalism and owning less more and more.

Thank you for this! I feel overwhelmed about the amount of stuff that I have accumulated. I once really loved these items but that I can no longer take care of them. I know I need to let go but I feel sad because I’ve spent so much money accumulating all these things. I guess I’m afraid my home will feel empty. I have always lived in a full home. Every drawer, closet cabinet, refrigerator was always full. I love all my things but it’s become so burdensome to keep taking care of them. I feel guilty if my home doesn’t look perfectly clean and neat all the time which I can’t do because I have more stuff then my home can fit right now.

Making shadow boxes of the small memory items along with photo of the person, a description of the person and the items can be put in a place of honor. The shadow box can be handed down to future generations. Families honor their military family member with a shadow box. You can also do a shadow box to remember a family pet with name, photo, a favorite toy, collar with tags.

But I feel what I need is to stop buying things I think I will need. I don't think I want to reduce my clothes yet. I still love and wear around 70% of them hanging in the warode. But I do know I want to get rid of all the lotions, face creams, masks.. maybe with just olive oil or coconut oil.
I hope I can really buy less things and do more mediation as well using insight timer.

I’m letting go with as much as I can (possessions). Partly to simplify my life and partly to push back against the system. Modern society in the western world just doesn’t fit with me anymore

Hm...I don't need (as in: I wouldn't die or starve or be cold etc. without them) my books, but frankly: No, I am not giving those up! I am already limiting "mindless" consumption (I don't by useless nicknacks, hell I don't have much in the way of decorations etc. to catch dust!), but I don't want to live out of bag either :) - I admire people who can, but I myself can not!
Altsheimers! Dementia! etc. - I know that my grandmother who has that is sometimes reminded of events she can not normally remember by the things in her home...so yeah, I'd rather have some things ;)
Note: I am not saying this to attack you, but:
You sure your minimalism isn't an Ersatzreligion? - I get reducing your consumption (don't buy Starbucks-Coffee, bring your own instead or go without...or don't by stuff that is only decorative and thus only gathering dust), but living out of a bag sounds horrible (we aren't on the run god damned!) :(

We love to hoard stuff to dress our false sense of self and a fear of freedom. We have been condoned all our lives to be under control and live in fear. Can be liberating to learn about impermanence. Learn who you really are by undressing your ego.

I can't throw away books and sheet music. I sold and donated a lot. But theres some voice in the back of my head - maybe my education? - that tells me, that it's "improper" to throw away books... that you're not supposed to throw away something, which holds knowledge and the work of other persons... 🤷‍♂️

Forgot to mention. Oh damnnit im out of dish rags. I shouldn't have thrown them out cause now I have to waste gas to go tonthe store to get more. Should I stock up on food? Or waste my money even further by taking small trips to the store? Or .aybe I should just sell my home & move I to a box behind the store. Then I won't have to worry about any of it cause the store has all the "things & the stuff" in 1 place. Instead of my garage? Absurd

Do it. It's so freeing. Almost anything you want to listen to you can more readily on your phone. It's a weight off you unlike anything.

The thing is this: Minimalism is easier if you few hobbies or interests which don't require things. Example: I like photography= camera, lenses, bags, tripods, printers, etc... I like cooking= numerous pots, pans, knives, blenders, bowls, utensils, etc. I like to fix things= every type of tool needed to fix things. I like the outdoors= mountain bike, tent, camping gear, etc.. you get the picture... The solution is to have few interests and be a sort of simple individual... To me, that's boring.... I love having varied interests and skills to do many things, but I have no place to keep all the stuff.....

No. Reason is why would you throw away a $600- 5th wheel hitch for $20 scrap metal when you could get your money back. I
& why the fuck would youncontribute to making the dump worse than it is when you could recycle it tso other people can make use of it.
