- According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than one person dies every day on average in the U.S. due to a police pursuit, with innocent bystanders making up more than one-third of those deaths. Now police departments are starting to use darts with GPS technology to make pursuits safer. NBC News' Steven Romo has more.

ASP: There’s too much dust, the DART won’t stick, we got TVI. XD
This isn’t new. It’s been used by multiple police departments for years.
Never heard of it
😂 exactly
Almost 2 decades 😂
even this demo by the mass state police is months old
I've never heard of this, been in law enforcement for 17 years, but this is wonderful technology
then they just take it off
I imagine cops will just follow from a far away enough that there's no pursuit. Plus I bet there's some heavy duty glue on it that prevents easy removal. Gorilla glue only takes 10--45 seconds to dry.
@@DominusDionysos- The glue is attached to the foam pad. The glue may hold like a gorilla, but the foam will tear away easily.
The entire hope is that once they slow down enough to even attempt to take it off, the cops are already caught up with them.
Hello? 2013? Here's your old news back!
So you're chasing a stolen car or a violent armed suspect. What did that accomplish? Car gets dumped or they carjack/hurt/take hostages. The whole point of pursuit is to apprehend the offending party, not to hopefully find the car they were in at some point.
Makes it easier to track them via a helicopter
@DavidDomke if you have a helicopter, no need for this
@leok7193 redundancy. That way, when something fails, you have an alternative
can place spike strips or stop sticks further ahead because the tracker is on
I have a removable tailgate on the back of my truck. All I have to do is hit a button and BOOM my tailgate falls off the back of my truck! Good luck cops
Law enforcement can adapt and foil strategies like that.
Imagine what a missile would do. 🚀
This isn’t even close to being new. It’s been around for several years
The GPS darts are easily fooled. #1 you can have Vaseline or any sort of oil on the rear and the darts won't stick well. #2 you can stop and knock them off with a tire iron, bat, crowbar, or pretty much anything else will blunt force. The Grappler Police Bumper is the tool that LE depts should be using.
Don't forget to oil the rear of your car.
simple measure yeah
Prices on motorcycles is about to go through the roof in bad neighbourhoods. 👀😂
Just get a spackle scraper and 2 pairs of rubber gloves then bye bye gps tracker.
this is because Grappler Police Bumper is NOT safe for them
Time to get Zimmerit back on our Vehicles XD
Why is this news this is not new technology it's been around for a while now
They still haven’t developed the electric hook from Fast and furious?
No good no good no good it's no good waste of taxpayer money
Police means TEAM!!!
If You can't work as a TEAM..... You're better off at Home!!!
Half of the so called TEAM doesn't know what Spike Strips are for!!
Last video I watched......Attempted to PIT an 8 Wheel Bus and Shot the Tires on a "Train track" 🤦🤦♂️
What about people on motorcycles?
in a dark dystopia of the year 2000 and beyond,,, everyone knows all the information your toilet told them
I've wondered how long it would take to release something like this. In the early 2010s, I'd posted comments on TH-cam chase videos about the police tagging vehicles with trackers and stopping the high-speed pursuit. The only issue with this tracker is that it's too big. It needs to be smaller so criminals don't just speed off, stop, and remove it.
Its been a thing since 2013. And the suspect likely won't have enough time to "speed off and stop" considering that they're already tracking him. So by the time he stops they're probably close enough to blitz him.
Deployed 76 times But What's the success rate?
Bingo!
From an article dated December 17th, 2024:
The pilot program in Massachusetts, launched in May 2024, equipped 30 cruisers with the technology and procured 2 handheld units, according to state police.
There were 60 StarChase deployments through the month of October, with a 73.33% vehicle tagging success rate.
I have my doubts about it at high speeds and I think the person inside the car wouldn't hear it hit the car and could probably stop and remove it
It likely isn’t too noticeable, but eventually most criminals will realize what’s going on once the cops stop chasing them, “stop, get out and check to see if you’ve been tracked”
@HiThisIsMine the device has some significant mass if you are one of those completely unaware people you might not hear it hit your car but I would hear it
@@markdi2 - You “would hear it”? You seem to know everything about the device, its weight and the overall experience, while also knowing nothing about it to have your “doubts”, all at the same time.
The sample fact is that in most chases, people aren’t quietly driving down the road at normal freeway speeds while also being in their normal state of mind. Adrenaline, takes over and you get tunnel vision. A clunk on the back of your car could be anything at that moment.
@HiThisIsMine of course I would hear it I'm not deaf and I am a electronics engineer at a company that has its own ZIP code
@HiThisIsMine well you seem pretty ignorant too
This has been around for years. Lol yall must be bored
Almost 2 decades 😂
Whatever happened to the Grappler? That makes way more sense.
The grappler is much more effective. Clearly, the maker of this product paid for this to be a news story. Look for grappler videos. All of the chases ended safely after deployment.
😂😂 this is old technology
I don’t wanna say that video showed it at low speed deployment, but show me that device working at 100 mph. My concern is that you can fire that device and it might have a relatively high rate of speed once fired, but if it’s chasing a vehicle moving at even higher rate of speed, it won’t work because it can’t catch up. Once the device is fired, it’s no longer going at the speed of the vehicle. It was fired from it has to carry itself forward And it has to make contact with that other speeding vehicle off of its own inertia its own momentum. is that possible under truly high rates of speed. Not 40 mph not 50 mph but when you hit 80 or 90 mph will this work?
Simple physics.
what 🤦🏻♂️ exit velocity is that of the vehicle plus that of it when fired standing still
I think every department and every vehicle should have this feature I think Ford needs to come out automatically equipping these on their vehicles from factory make it to where it’s a button you press on your steering wheel to fire it
Waste of money. It can probably be pulled off judging by the video failing to mention that possibility, and its not actually stopping anything. Grappler is better.
very old c mon
Abolish starchase because I don't care about the lives
Deployed 76 times, but what's the success rate of catching the criminal later?
Let us know!
@@Kitty8791tagging the vehicle is easy, how often are they actually able to apprehend the suspect?
Arizona Highway Patrol has had these for nearly 5 years lol
So, criminals won't figure this out, since it's been seen in a video and, when a police officer who was chasing them suddenly stops, they won't suspect it's been deployed, stop their vehicle, rip it off and possibly toss it into the back of a pickup truck in a parking lot or in another lane that's stopped at a traffic light? Heh. Why is it that nobody ever thinks these things through?
That's neat. I wish police would use this instead of EMPs or tire busting road spikes.
un, dos, tres, cuatro! 2:02
Star Chase technology has been around for over 10 years this isn’t new NBC.
What a super invention! I'll be interested to hear a follow-up to see how effective it is.
Look up the grappler. That's a super invention. Fun to watch in action too.
73% success rate out of 60 deployments.
@@DominusDionysos That's effective. I'm only a layman, but that sounds like it's definitely worth it.
Old tech that been out, and wait until you get a car covered in mud, dirt or some sort of oil and that's make it defective
the classic PIT/TVI is just better anyways
Wow
I know a fear departments near me that use it
Stop high speed chases. Sounds simple
Amazon RF blocking bag😅😅
Brian O’Connor would roll in his grave if he saw this nerf crap!
If you ever played need for speed hot pursuit (2010) or remastered. In the games, the cop cars are equipped with spike strips and EMP’s to try to bring the racers to a stop. The spike strips would be released from the back of the cop car and causes the racers to take damage and spin out and while emps can be fired from front and can damage the racers car and immobilize them a bit. The cops in real life should probably consider EMP’s for police chases that can override and overpower the suspects car as well.
I love that game. But i always wondered if EMPs aren't used because of unintentional harm they might cause
emp's would be defective on classic/older cars or a vehicle equipped with this thing called EMP Shield
American invented, American made, American American!
cover back in veg oil wnt stick
So now if you're out of luck getting stopped and they feel like firinf this, you'll have to remove extra tough stickt glue residue from your car
This is a good thing
Put starchase out of business
This is cheating

That good.
