  • Footage from the Midland Railway Centre Butterley's Ale & Rail Day 20/7/24. This BR Blue Class 44 diesel locomotive was the most entertaining performer on the day in my opinion, as you can see from some of the footage. Best of all, the driver kindly allowed me a cab ride, plus a walk through the engine compartment which were both amazing experiences. I've included some of the footage from the cab ride towards the start of the video. The diesel electric locomotive is named Great Gable after the peak in the Lake District, which incidentally I climbed last year and will be doing again in a couple of weeks time.
    Segments include:
    - D4 arriving from Swanwick junction.
    - Cab ride from Hammersmith, running around the coaches there and coupling up to the stock for the return working down the line, then the run from Hammersmith to Butterley over the most scenic section of the line through the fishing lakes giving a drivers eye view.
    - Full line run from Riddings up the gradient to Swanwick Junction which provides an entertaining run once we're out of the temporary speed restriction, then running express through Butterley to Hammersmith.
    - D4 impressively departing Butterley towards the end of the day
    - A segment with a bit of thrash and clag as the loco works light engine at Swanwick Junction.

Footage of a Jinty steam locomotive working on the line from the same weekend can be found here:

I'd recommend a visit as the line and museums have a lot to offer.
Massive thanks to the loco crew and the gentleman who was instrumental in making this cab ride and engine compartment walk through happen, it really did make my weekend!
Enjoy! Please like and subscribe for future railway content!
