  • When America needed him most, Seabiscuit became the working man’s hero and the most remarkable thoroughbred racehorse in history! Seabiscuit’s story played out against America’s Great Depression, when one in four breadwinners was without work. Spectator sports, radio programming and movie theaters offered an escape and created instant celebrity... even for horses. Seabiscuit made us believe in ourselves, in courage, in perseverance, and in America. Watch his journey!
    This program includes the complete archival Seabiscuit and War Admiral “Match Race,” which is considered to be the greatest horse race in history. Featuring real footage of jockey Red Pollard’s thrilling victory at the 1940 Santa Anita Handicap.

    My mother visited the Ridgewood Ranch and met Sea Biscuit, and even had the opportunity to feed this great horse. She was amazed at how small he was. This was one of her favorite memories.

    I’ve never understood why Seabiscuit was considered sort of ugly. While it was true that he was built unconventionally for a racing TB, instead more compact, perhaps more like a quarter horse. Maybe in another lifetime he would have been a champion cutting horse or barrel racing horse haha. But I think he was beautifully proportioned. Every part of his body seemed to flow perfectly from one part to another. And what a magnificently long arched neck and a very strong handsome head!

      The best racehorses have a lot of muscularity. It’s not always about perfect symmetry! I have two rabbits as pets-one is a rescued wild Cottontail, now four years old and definitely built for speed. Her companion buddy is a female mini Rex, not at all built for speed, but incredibly muscular (she is about a year old). The Cottontail chases the mini Rex relentlessly, but she can never catch her! Not only does the mini Rex have a clumsier, heavier, bulkier physique, but as a domestic rabbit, she has a more playful, relaxed personality. Not at all competitive. Yet, I watch her routinely outsmart the wild rabbit (built for speed and cunning! Go figure!) and the muscular mini Rex will put on incredible bursts of speed and unexpected maneuvers that leave the Cottontail in her dust. As a result, the Cottontail has become intensely determined to catch her, much like Captain Ahab trying to capture Moby Dick! So far, the Cottontail keeps failing. 😂

    I had a thoroughbred in 1992, I will NOT tell you her name (filly) She was a 4 year old that one of my friend's owned. He was getting out of the business, retiring to Arizona. So I bought her for $4,000 out of his barn. She lost her first five races for me. I put her in an $8,000 claiming race. She won going away on a Thursday night in the rain! And she won her next 9 out of 11 races!! I did breed her to a fine stallion; but my circumstances led me to sell her and the breeding rights to her in 1997. I see now that the colt she had- went onto win over $1.5 million. Reminds me of Seabiscuit!

    Seabiscuit actually had the pedigree. He is just portrayed as the people's horse since he did not have the look unlike Secretariat who was a freak of nature.

    • @marysueeasteregg
      @marysueeasteregg 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Seabiscuit had a promising pedigree, for sure. His dam was well bred, his sire Hard Tack, too. Hard Tack was a multiple stakes winner whose career was impeded by an extremely difficult temperament. But unlike Secretariat's parents Bold Ruler and Somethingroyal, Hard Tack and Seabiscuit's dam Swing On were *not* proven in the breeding shed, and are not remembered as otherwise successful breeding stock. Seabiscuit was from Hard Tack's first crop; he was Swing On's second foal. Neither horse went on to produce another horse of note -- Seabiscuit, in that way, was more of a genetic fluke than Secretariat. When Secretariat was conceived, Bold Ruler had been champion North American sire six years running, and Somethingroyal was already established as an outstanding broodmare, the dam of three stakes winners and three stakes-placed runners; she and Bold Ruler continued to produce well in the breeding shed after their 1969 date in which Secretariat was conceived. Bold Ruler and Somethingroyal would both be remembered as outstanding breeding stock even if Secretariat had never existed.
      Seabiscuit's pedestrian looks did have much to do with his popularity as the people's horse. So did the fact that he was owned (like Seattle Slew and California Chrome) by an upstart newbie owner, rather than by an old, established racing stable; that early in his career he had (like John Henry and Stymie) run in the claiming ranks; and also because he ran mostly in California, in an era when the old eastern racing establishment looked down upon the West Coast as the boondocks of Thoroughbred racing.

    I've watched a lot of documentaries and read Hillenbrand's book. She knows so much about Seabiscuit and equally included Charles Howard, Tom Smith and Red Pollard. Outside of racing Seabiscuit in the match with War Admiral, George Woolf wasn't that involved in the whole story (as I understand it). Great rider but this seemed like a tribute to him. Just sayin'.

    How come Iv never heard of Seabiscuit until now. Shame on me. My parents had a racehorse with their best friends called HoofHearted. Google top ten funniest racehorse names on a British talk show. They talk about all the names that were submitted but were denied but at the very end they talk about HOOF. I'm proud to be part of Hoofs history

    In the time of "CORONAVIRUS WORLD WAR - 3" in 2020 when your own life is at the hands of a invisible pandemic it's cinema and music that breaks all barriers and provides solace and entertainment in the confines of your home.Have been binge watching all sorts or documentaries of different genres and topics with the sport of "Horse racing" being one of my favourites.Have been a fan of horse racing in India since the age 19 years and later a punter for over 25 years finally quitting betting and becoming a armchair voyeur of the sport.Have seen the movie "SEABISCUIT" but still have to read the book written by Laura .Hillenbrand.. A excellent documentary with the author herself explaining the horse's amazing career and fame. .

    Out of nowheres?, no real pedigree? he actually had great pedigree on his mother's side and astoundingly great pedigree on his father's side,. His damns name was Broom Sweep, out of a famous stallion of that day, easily found out if you're looking for it. on his site side, he was the grandson of Man o War his sire was Hardtack, which was said to be the most beautiful of all Man o' Wars sons, Full of speed but highly unmanageable, so as you can tell that first comment irritated me because it's like good old Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons having a hold of Seabiscuit again and just beating him down again, so if you're going to make a documentary on something: get your history right and set the history straight. Because Seabiscuit, was belittled from the day of his birth for not having the perfect confirmation for a racehorse, she inherited from his mother large knee. Basically a disability,or as far as most of the people back in those days felt, knees,. He might not have had the best of confirmation, he was sent to one of the top trainers of the world at that time, Sunny Jiim Fritzsimmons who could not overlook his disabilities and therefore thought he was lazy and a little value,so by the time he was two or three he had already been raced and 30 36 races that blew his knees out for the rest of his life, that's the only way that he was picked up at a stakes race for $5,000.which was a lot of money back in them days so if you just didn't have much of a pedigree then something was wrong,because by then he was overused over abused and was not a happy horse he was angry, nervous, and very anxious, tending more like his father, Hardtack,
    then, true nature which was very intelligent.and throughout all of those beatings that he had to take he still won when he could and damn dog determined when he couldn't. and when he was free of Fritz Simmons and he was treated with respect and dignity and loved and taken care of and his legs were applied with salves and things to help him to get through the pain that he had to take, because he was over raced as a baby. He came out with the best attitude, willing to give his all for his next owner being appreciative of what was being done for him, he adapted himself to have the best constitution, the best heart and determination that there ever was displayed in "animal"in those days, that's why he was so well loved by the American people, that were beat down and didn't know how to get back up, not only that he was an easy when that a few dollars would pay off in big bucks for that day, and time. because he showed them, you can get back you up, be strong even with weakness, be strong, you can do whatever you want to do if he hadn't been so intelligent and given a God-given opportunity of having people who cared and loved and knew how to put him back on his feet, no one would have ever heard the name Seabiscuit, almost destroyed by a earent trainer. Once he understood what the the game was about, he was on it just the same as Secretariat. And if his owner hadn't kept him, down on his ranch, confined to just 40 mares you would be finding a lot of Seabiscuits get to this day. So althoughFitzsimmon basically disabled him by his third birthday, it was his Sires Man o Wars intelligence and speed, and Hardtacks, fight, that gave him the ability to go on for 8 years or more running in handicaps that were putting more weight on him than the 2 and 3-year-olds, he raced against, but they still couldn't stop him from breaking the records and beating those little 2-year-olds and keeping him on the track way after he probably should have been done with it, and the battle between him and him and his uncle War Admiral, was Epic!!! So to start out being the misfit, broken down horse, that nobody thought had any potential. Became one of the greatest horses that was ever born. So don't belittle is breeding, or character, or challenges it's offensive, and it's really offensive!!! If you're going to make a movie about something you really don't seem to know a whole lot about. don't start out by just saying that you know the the actor in the role is not reallywell bred, but after all!!!! It, Irritates me...

      I know I travel out so I'll make this sweet short and sweet oh when I was about 12 years old I found a book in the library called come on see the Scott and it was written by the wife of the man that bought Seabiscuit Daniel's I can't remember I'm old now but that book was basically a lot of facts put together and also the emotional side of watching that horse struggle and having to go through a lot of things and it was one of the best books I ever read she was the author of the book The wife and it really you know it didn't play games she let everybody know that Sonny Jim Fitzgerald and did not like the horse and thought that he was Lady and lazy and always ran him against some of the big ones that ends up see this can beat all their butts by the time the book ended more or less I think it a gallant Fox was one of them can't remember anyway it was well worth reading and I loved it and I had it until just recently and gave it to a young young kid not young he was 15 16 who was a lover of horses so anyway I said I am a chatter I tend to chat especially if I think I know something and I'm going to cut it short and let y'all off LOL LOL LOL...

      Getting to him and passing is 2 different stories. That horse loved the challenge. Secretariat was a great horse. I got to see him run. But the biscuit would have done to him exactly what he did to war admiral. Bye bye. I agree it sure would have been the race of all races. Ahh we can only dream. My dad saw seabiscuit run. He said when that horse hit high gear there was no catching him. My money would be on the biscuit.
