And the way he casually says "give him another month to think about it" is just so soulless. The things he does are very subtle and "tame" compared to typical movie villains but he's gotta be one of the most despicable characters in a film, when you take all of the context into consideration. A very underrated performance.

This scene shows how evil Norton is. One could imagine a better man agreeing to help Andy get a retrial and regain freedom, and perhaps after they can work as equals running the same scams and laundering money as before. Andy said himself he would be just as indictable for the crimes. Instead what Norton does shows he has no interest in treating Andy as a human being, let alone a partner in crime. He basically wants a slave to run his scams and polish his boots.

    • @missyadams

+Xiran Wang You missed the point.
If the warden had treated Andy better, they would have been partners, the reason why Andy rebelled away was because he was just a tool, a slave. Outcomes of the story would be different.

+Lord Void Andy wouldn't have a reason to hate norton if Andy was treated "equal" and if norton was actually a good person, he would have helped Andy get out of prison and would have continued helping norton making big bucks.

Casting is definitely a HUGE part in whether or not a movie will be successful, and every part in 'The Shawshank Redemption' is perfectly cast.

In this scene, Norton gifted Andy the best gift someone in Andy's position could receive; desperation. When Andy learnt the true nature of the Warden and how far he was going to go, to prevent Andy ever from leaving Shawshank. Andy at that moment knew he was a Deadman. If he stays working under the thumb of the Warden, he'd die in Shawshank (never being allowed to leave, while he was alive) or once The Warden no longer needed Andy, he'd kill him just to tie up the loose end (just as he killed the kid to silence him). I think that's when Andy found his motivation to make his daring escape, and that he had no intention of being recaptured or taken alive. To get busy living or get busy dying.

    • @mphlohi
      @mphlohi ปีที่แล้ว +14

He already his escape plan in motion from the beginning, but what this did was give him his motivation to bury the warden, drag him down to perish in the pit he tried to throw Andy into, and at the same time take the financial means he needs to start a new life.

Andy outsmarts the warden. Andy says it ends, knowing the warden would demand the opposite, keeping the money laundering going, continuing on with Andy's plan for escape. A pivitol scene of the battle of wits that no one seems to notice. It also makes Andy appear to be completely beaten, lowering the wardens guard and awareness even further, while Andy brilliantly plots his escape as well as revenge.

I first watched this movie in my second year of college and I gotta say... Frank Darabont wrote this movie perfectly. I love how Norton starts off somewhat generous in the beginning, but as the film progresses, his evil side starts to unfold. In the scene where Tommy gets shot, Norton's eyes are literally black. But this scene really shows his true colors. "Or you will do the hardest time there is." The way he softly delivers that line so softly makes it so threatful. And the fact is, he was being obtuse before Andy got put in solitary. I don't think there's any bad thing about this movie at all.

This was the moment that sealed Warden Norton’s fate. Had he just let Andy stop helping with the scams, Norton could have taken what money he had and retired. Instead, he pushed Andy, threatening him. For Andy, this was the last straw. The Warden was dead, he just didn’t know it yet.

And threatens him to confess to his crime[s] - thinking Tommy was gonna escape, when in fact, he was just telling what could have been the truth, which could have proved Andy's innocence.
Sadly, there are still a bunch of Sammy Nortons walking out there - who I must say, don't give a rat's ass about justice.

That obtuse line really got under The Warden’s skin lol. I remember when I saw this movie as a kid I had to look the word up to see exactly why it got him rattled lol.

Norton is my favorite movie villain. He is not some megalomaniac like the Joker, or a jealous creature like Scar. Rather he is a manipulative psychopath who uses his persona as a kind religious man to get what he wants while at the sametime not afraid to show the prisoners his true colors once their in his prison. There actual people like Norton who do exist who do manipulate others for their own needs, and politicians who will use their power to hurt others.

I really love the line “we’ll dance around the fire like dark angels”. It’s such a weirdly dark line you can tell norton has a screw loose.

I've never seen a version with the line changed, but I'm guessing "wild lnjuns" was dubbed as "dark angels" for network broadcasts. The original probably considered as a racist slur.

I completely agree. In fact, while I (as well as everyone) loves Freeman and Robbins - I actually think Norton is my favorite character in the film. It's just so fascinating to watch someone create and pull off evil that well. You almost find yourself rooting for the bad guy after watching this scene.
