- Despite a superb goal by Glenn Hoddle, England are beaten 2-1 at home by Spain in an entertaining friendly at Wembley in March 1981. England go into the game having beaten Spain twice in the previous year but goals from Satrustegui and Zamora give the away side victory, as they continue their preparations for hosting the following year's World Cup finals.

The build up for both the Spanish goals was light years ahead of anything England were capable of in this game.
Spain were totally abysmal at the WC the following year, in their home country.

them 7 games in a row since then, including 2 European qualifiers and a 2 to 1 win
in the 1980 European Cup the year before. Spain was the number 1 big bottle jobs in
Europe back then even worse than England. sure they had that golden generation
and became a top European nation statistically and England has stayed the same.
But they haven't always been a great footballing nation they underachieved massively.

Juanito era eléctrico, rapidez y visión de juego... los pases que daba siempre generaban peligro.
Arconada era un figura hasta en el suelo gracias a el llegaron a la final en francia y por un mierda fallo le dieron hasta en el cielo de la boca que deporte mas injusto
Y que conste que a pesar de esa jugada maldita, hizo un buen partido el resto. Si pasa en un entrenamiento no tiene importancia. Fue la fatídica suerte de que era la final, y cualquier error se paga caro, y a él le tocó pagarlo. Ningún portero ha llegado a igualar su calidad ni se ha hecho respetar tanto como él.
Qué uniforme tan bonito España debe jugar siempre así .camiseta roja con numero blanco , pabatlon azul y medias negras cin la bandera de españa arriba y bueno si el escudo es la con el aguila de San Juan ya seria 12 sobre 10.

La constitución no la modificaron, lo que el escudo del Aguila de San Juan, en la Carta Magna, consta como escudo oficial de España hasta 1981. Por eso aquellos que lo tachan de "anticonstitucional" o "precostitucional" lo hacen desde la ignorancia. O peor, desde la mala leche.

Phil Neal was all over the fucking place for the two Spanish goals. How he got as many caps as he did is a mystery to me.
Because he played for Liverpool. To be fair to him no English full back at that time came up against the sort of running off the ball and one touch passing that the Spanish produced in this game.

@@BrendonChase2012 Hoddle didn't have the athleticism or stamina to dominate at international level if you compare him with someone like Paulo Roberto Falcao.
spain were really dynamic in this game. everyone had thought they would have gone on to lord over all of the other teams in the next year's world cup as the hosts. it was really surprising how poorly they performed. they played all of 5 games and were utterly unconvincing in all of them

Yes they looked really good here, running off the ball, creating gaps and playing the ball into feet.
They did their pre World Cup training in the Perynees at 2000 metres altitude with temperatures of 10 degrees in the evening; their 1st match in Valencia at sea level was at 35 degrees celsius. Total disaster for them.

Arconada y Casillas, dos porteros de un estilo muy similar. Grandes reflejos y algunas lagunas, sobre todo en el juego aéreo. Capaces de hacer paradas imposibles y luego pifiar en jugadas sencillas.

yo he visto unos cuantos partidos en Atotxa en los 80 sobre todo 86-87 quedamos segundos y ganamos la copa. LA real metio 6-0 a cuatro o cinco equipos en casa, y a partir del tercer gol, la grada se animaba mas cuandi se la robaban a la real y atacaban la porteria de Arconada que al contrario. El publico preferia ver un paradon de Arconada a otro gol. Eso no lo he vuelto a ver jamas en mi vida.

However, Spain: one world cup and three Euros. England: one world cup and that was so long ago that the trophy was different.

Era uno de los mejores centrocampistas de España. Estuvo en la selección hasta la eurocopa 88 que ganó Holanda.

Tras el fracaso mundialista se extendió, a modo de leyenda urbana, que Arconada se dejó marcar goles porque había recibido amenazas de ETA. Se asume que los jugadores de una selección han de ser los mejores de su país, pero ello no significa que tengan que ser mártires.

Lo de las presuntas amenazas de ETA lo apunté, tal como ya dije, a manera de leyenda urbana, lo cual quería decir que era un pensamiento que estaba ahí, en las cabezas de algunos, pero que no llegó a demostrarse probadamente..... De hecho, en los años posteriores no ha vuelto a tocarse ese tema, por lo que cabe pensar que no pasó de ser, justamente, una leyenda urbana.
Además, con independencia de que fuera o no abertzale, me mantengo en lo que dije, que era que, en caso de haber recibido esas amenazas, no estaba obligado a aceptar convertirse en un mártir.

Había calidad en los jugadores. Dicen que hubo problemas en el vestuario entre jugadores de unos clubes y otros. Del Madrid con los jugadores vascos. Y esto se trasladó al terreno de juego.

If Phil Neal had been doing his job properly, Clemence wouldn't have been so exposed. Neal had an awful game.
