- The first in a series of videos following my exploits into the world of digital. In this first video I give a straightforward introduction of my set-up and show how I work WSPR mode with the Yaesu FTDX5000MP Limited along with the Yaesu SCU-17 interface unit.
This is one of many amateur/ham radio related videos on my channel. Please feel free to browse 👀, like 👍🏻 and subscribe 🔔, remembering to hit the bell so you’re notified of new videos.
Thanks.
Ian.
Thanks Ian. I have a Yaesu Ft1000MP MK5 so the use of the SCU interface is of particular interest. Thanks for taking the time to share.
Peggie Glad it was of use! More to come 👍🏻
Great video
Thanks!
Very helpful video. Many thanks.
Great Alan!
That's it!!! now I'm going to have to try WSPR........ Great upload Mate.. :)
Mike-M0MSN More to come Mike! Welcome to the dark side....😮
Nicely done Ian! 73
Tim G5TM Thanks Tim! You’re catching up on your backlog 👍🏻
Thanks for the video Ian. I enjoyed the WSPR part the most as I haven't done that yet.
Also congratulations on 1k subscribers. Well deserved.

VK4KK Thanks Kevin! Been a slow climb, but got there in the end! In theory, 1k allows me to live steam from a mobile phone, so may put that to good use shortly. There’s three videos so far in this series. FT8 to come soon 👍🏻
Good job Ian. Don’t forget to use split operation ‘rig’ or ‘fake it’ on FTx (settings). Great stuff!
Sometimes I have a dabble with FT8 for DXCC hunting (or keeping it quiet when XYL has gone to bed) but I find FT8/4 all rather bland. Love RTTY/PSK chatting and contesting. Thanks again.
Nick M1DDD
NICKGAR7 Thanks and yes Nick, lots to learn and find my way around. RTTY etc all to come! 😀
Nice video Ian... I will be looking for you on 20mtrs and 40mts FT8 😎
Thanks Roly! I’ll need to keep my ears open or arrange a sked 👍🏻
Hello Ian, where should the Rx/Tx dials be on the front of this please?
Hi John. Mine are: RX 9 o’clock and TX adjusted to keep ALC at zero. Tiny tiny taps of the knob can take a bouncing needle to nothing. Adjust if you move about the FT8 frequency band too, as it can change. Good luck 👍🏻
@@ianxfsThank you so much!
Thanks for the insight I’m currently looking at purchasing the 5K but not sure what cables I would need for pc and digital modes ? If you could kindly let me know that would be great I just need to get away from the virtual com port nightmare cheers 73
Hi Daniel. The SCU-17 has an RS232 that goes to the rig for CAT and also a data lead that splits in two for the Packet & RTTY sockets on the back of the rig. A third lead (USB) goes to your PC. If I recall correctly, before I had the SCU-17, I had a RS232 to USB conversion lead that allowed CAT to the rig from a PC. If you buy an SCU-17, check to see which cables it comes supplied with. There’s a brief view of the rear of my 5000 in a more recent video relating to OLED replacement if you look (3m53s). Good luck getting sorted 👍🏻
Thank you so much really appreciate the reply and that’s helped me a lot 73 Dan
Thank you for this explanation. Did you get the PKT to work? If so, which changes did you make?
Thanks. No sorry, I’ve not gone down the PKT route as of yet… good luck if you suss 👍🏻
i have my ft 5000mp set with the ft1200 selected in the list works fine in RX and TX
Great.
Hello Ian,
I have now bought one of the last new FTDX5000MP in the UK. I have fallen in love with it instantly - such a beauty! I am trying to sort out CAT Control so my N3FJP logger can switch frequency on the rig if I select a band spot - does the SCU-17 offer CAT Control? Does it come with all of the needed cables?
Many Thanks,
John

Good one John! A conversion lead to USB will give you CAT. You only need the SCU-17 if you want a sound card for digital modes. It comes with all the leads so you don’t need the former if you go down this route first. I didn’t get my 17 ‘til later….Have Fun!
@@ianxfs All sorted Ian. I tried two different RS232>USB cables. The one using the Prolific USB chip didn't work, there is some compatibility issue there. The one with the FTDI USB chip worked instantly. So we are now cooking on gas 😊
Hi Every time i key up the rig goes onto PKt any ideas.
Not sure for certain Kelvin? There’s the USB setting in Mode on the WSJT Settings screen and there’s also menu 103 in the rig (if you’re using a 5000). Have you got those set right?
Have to watch ⌚ few more times. 73 years old all this technology gives me a headache. My FTDX-1200 new radio, trying to learn
