  • The second in a series of videos following my exploits into the world of digital modes. In this follow-up video I show how I work FT8 with the Yaesu FTDX5000MP Limited along with the Yaesu SCU-17 interface unit. Learning as I go 😀
This is one of many amateur/ham radio related videos on my channel. Please feel free to browse 👀, like 👍🏻 and subscribe 🔔, remembering to hit the bell so you’re notified of new videos.

You’re doomed Ian! It’s bloody addictive 😂 I use all modes available and ft8 certainly does well for me on 80m and I’ve managed a lot of dx with 50w

    Hi Ian,
I had been dabbling with FT8 for a little while and made several contacts with Roly earlier this month, but just this week started getting more serious about it's use. One technique I found that works quite well is if a station I started to call is seen contacting another, I hit the Halt button and then hit Enable when I see the RRR or RR73. Usually get a quick response and also use your tip about selecting a clear transmit frequency. Some times will try for the weaker ones at about -18 to -20, but mosrtly stay wiith -10 or stronger stations. Stay safe. 73 WJ3U

Good points Don! Thanks, I’ll try that. Will see if I can nab Roly at some point too 👍🏻

Nice video Ian, Seeing a waterfall like that explains why it is difficult to make myself seen/heard on 2omtrs from ZL.
One VERY good tip is to work only stations that are NOY calling on my transmit slot. I normally transmit very low on the waterfall and those who come back to me at the top end of the waterfall always get better success..........Cheers
p.s. I am hoping to break through 500 subs this weekend all going well, congrats on the +1000.

Ian, I have bought the SCU17 and it's connected to my FTDX5000MP. The speaker and mic codecs are set per your pervious video. Where should the TX dial be set on the SCU17?

      @ianxfs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi John. It’s very very sensitive. I think mine’s around 9 o’clock? If you transmit some FT8, switch the rig meter between power and ALC with one hand, while adjusting the SCU17 TX knob with the other. With very tiny adjustments on the SCU17 you can get full power, say set at 50w, while the ALC is on zero, or incredibly close, with the needle moving slightly….you’ll soon get the nack 👍🏻(If you reduce the TX knob too far, you can see the power fall back. It’s a case of juggling to get full chosen power and zero ALC)

@@ianxfs I shall have another go later on. TX dial currently set to 0, which might explain why no-one replies! 🤣
      I appreciate you! 🍻

@@ianxfs Goodness me, you weren't lying Ian! Super sensitive. Per your instructions, I now have 49.5w out (LP700 Station Monitor) with zero ALC needle movement. Thank you.

I just setup the same setup as you have.
I have the scu-21 interface cable.
on 80m do you use usb ?
For some reason i seem to receive and transmit but , start conversations automatically but it doesn't seem to finish them with a 73..
So i guess i am wondering do you put it on the exact freq or up for usb?
Any settings or help would great ka1jbe

Hi! Yes USB mode. The sequence of messages sent is semi-fixed in WSJT-X. It should auto-sequence as the QSO progresses. Not all are used in this auto-mode though. If you’re replying to someone else’s call, then messages 1,3&5 are used. If you’re the one calling CQ and then someone replies to you, a sequence of 6,3&5 are used. You can manually select as well if you like by pressing the buttons next to each message. Hope this helps 👍🏻

The SCU-17 is most useful and with it’s separate TX and RX level pots

Yes Rob. It just needs little white markers for the pointers as it’s tricky to see where they been left or knocked to…especially in the shadow of the rig if underneath like mine 🙄
