    Thanks for doing these posts. I went to fully digital mixer using a laptop as a control surface. Love the plug-ins and the many outputs. It used to take racks of processing gear this does it simply, efx and eq's can be routed to all inputs/outputs- amazing. Keep doing these secret tricks, I've tried them and they actually work. Thanks again.

    Thank-you! Obvious once it's explained. I use an X32 Producer and can easily spare some higher numbered channels for sidechain EQ.

      Works like a charm on my XR18, I am not pro on this mixer yet and maybe you can guide me for an overall good delay, because I can’t sync it to midi and don’t have someone to do the tap to get timing good, what would be an all around delay fx and settings to work with most tempos?

    • @danielkharrat
      @danielkharrat  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can do the tap tempo yourself on the control app on your ipad or smartphone. The tap button is on the page of the delay effect. There's no magic number that works for everything but in most cases it doesn't matter if the delay is perfectly synced to the tempo as long as it's close enough it works. If the delay is too fast or too slow compared to the song you will notice that because it feels wrong. What i can tell you is that the average person can start to notice delay when it's more than 10 milliseconds so for the delay effect anything less than 10ms is pretty much useless
      Somewhere between 300 and 500 ms is the short answer

    Well done. Thank you, I’m trying to cure this issue for our live mix with an X32 and this is great.

    As opposed to just using the key filter section which is already right there on the stock compressor? It's designed specifically for this whole trick without ever leaving the compressor section and avoids the need for user setups and extra channels

    • @danielkharrat
      @danielkharrat  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In the case of this console, you are right. But i mentioned in the beginning of the video that this method always works regardless of type of mixer or if it has a key filter feature or not. It's a more general method that doesn't rely on a specific feature of a certain console

    • @yhamgtt
      @yhamgtt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@danielkharrat good point. At the same time, the mixer _does_ need to have a key source feature for this to work either way

      the difference with this trick is that you have much greater EQ control over the sidechained signal. For de-essing purposes, this method is a little redundant. But let's say you have a vocalist who has a really pronounced midrange honk around 1.6k on certain vowels--you don't want to cut that frequency on the channel EQ to the point where it sounds scooped, but boosting 1.6k considerably with a bell curve on the key signal will cause your normal channel compressor to clamp down harder on those vowels.

    I feel like this goes without saying, but now you're unable to use "normal" compression on that vocal channel as you've tied it up with the de-essing trick, right?

    • @danielkharrat
      @danielkharrat  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You can still insert a compressor from the effects

    • @ChinchillaWafers
      @ChinchillaWafers 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You could route the vocal to a sub group and compress the sub group. It can sound nice compressing vocals together rather than individually.

    It's all well and good, but I am confused as to why you use a second channel just for this? If you entered the second page of the compressor settings there ought to be a key filter that you can change the Q value and the target frequency of...let it listen to itself but only the frequency you need, adjust the compressor accordingly, and voila, no?

    • @danielkharrat
      @danielkharrat  ปีที่แล้ว

      Does it show up as an interface on your mac? Do you see the Xusb as an option in reaper? If yes, i have a step by step tutorial on how to setup reaper with x32 for multitrack recording. However if you don't see the interface on your mac you probably need to install a driver from the behringer website so that your mac can recognize the console interface

    Hi, I was wondering why didn't you side-chain to self with filter at 8k (and insert an fx compressor post-EQ)? Was there a specific reason?

    • @danielkharrat
      @danielkharrat  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No not really, i was showing the general method regardless if the mixer has a filter in the side chain or not. Since this mixer does have a filter, yes you can absolutely side chain to self with the filter

    Hello, is there any way to prevent some letters from exploding during recording (to avoid de-essing)? I mean, what can the vocalist do about it? Can you give a hint in terms of miking or posture? I would be grateful if you could give me some ideas on this. Thanks for the video.

    • @danielkharrat
      @danielkharrat  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's different for every person but bringing the tongue slightly back further away from the teeth while pronouncing the s and t sounds will help reduce the harshness and make it sound more gentle but the singer has to make a conscious effort of doing that

    • @unalarslanofficial
      @unalarslanofficial ปีที่แล้ว

      @@danielkharrat thanks, but I think this conscious effort seems to damage the spirit of the song as well. But despite everything worth a try.

      You just need to plug your microphone into one XLR input on the back of the console then in the routing menu give that XLR input to 2 different channels as i explained in the video

      @@just.decide_platforms. you can use the XLR outputs on the back of the console. Go to the routing menu and in the "OUT" section you can assign any of the 16 xlr outputs to anything you want. So just plug a cable into an output on the back of the console and give it to whoever needs to listen
