    Hall's was the biggest jump from one record to the next, by almost 35 kilos. In that sense, it's the most impressive.

      He also completely changed people’s perception on what was physically possible in terms of max deadlift. Very few people believed that he could do it and gave him a lot of sh*t about it. Afterwards, no one was challenging Eddie’s capabilities and everyone now knew that 500kg was possible.

    Some people doubted Jon Pall Sigmarsson's refereeing of the 501 kg deadlift by Thor, but considering Jon has been dead for 30 years I would say he did a pretty good job for his personal situation.

    Just to note this, a lot of sumo pullers have shot up in PRs recently cause the kabuki bar has started being used in more competitions. It's a much more whippier bar which provides an even better leverage. Also using a combination of a bendy bar, sumo and straps (which allows a grip width that wouldn't be used raw) gives an even larger bend and even larger biomechanical advantage.

  • @IsaacMorgan98
    @IsaacMorgan98 2 ปีที่แล้ว +38

    I still considers Eddie's to be the most impressive. The same as people talk about Roger Banister whenever talking about the fastest mile run because he was the insane man to do it first when no one else thought it was possible.
    Also with the sumo vs conventional debate, they say there's not much different but they still pull sumo... Like the deadlift suit, they say it doesn't make a difference but they still use it.

    • @kblkbl
      @kblkbl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They who? The heaviest deadlifts are still conventional. On a broader scale most WRs are also still conventional. Sumo isn't easier, it's easier for some very specific athletes.
      The RoM argument misses a very obvious point. We're not moving in a 2d world. The amount of hip external rotation required to perform an actual sumo deadlift instead of "conventional pull in a sumo stance" is very noticeable for anyone who tries it. Same consideration about the hip greater hip abduction requirement when you're in the end range of your hip external rotation. There's less vertical movement but there's a lot more moving transversally.

    • @IsaacMorgan98
      @IsaacMorgan98 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@kblkbl It's just that the numbers that surround sumo don't make any sense?? How are they comparable when it allows men literally half the size of others to be pulling the same numbers? Has the human race evolved passed weight effecting our performance? And if so then why does Jamal Browner or Cailer Woolam or insert any other top sumo puller fall horribly short on just about every other strength event when compared to a prime Hafthor or Eddie?

  • @ZeUbinator
    @ZeUbinator 2 ปีที่แล้ว +83

    As far as I know Eddie actually used his own bar. It also seems the deadlift championships were very much organized around him that year and he was allowed to take whatever amount of rest he desired. Given that I think the circumstances were comparable to Thor's 500 (Thor still had to prep for and perform on a specific day). That being said, Eddie deserves a lot of credit for being the one to break the barrier.

    • @BuJammy
      @BuJammy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      The rest was more determined by the event / livestream, I think, which, yes, was set up for Hall. Two bars were made, Hall trained with one and on the night the other one was used. Hall got the same rest as everyone else. (Jerry Pritchet claimed that he personally "had to wait 45 minutes", when in fact the longest he had to wait was 29 minutes.). In spite of all that, I still think calling it "in competition" (as opposed to Thor's lift) is a bit silly.

The lengths at which he went to in his mind and body were insane, and to think like this, imagine going for your heaviest deadlift yet and then right before you pull put 40lbs a side. I think 20 kilos may be a good rule of thumb for how much you get out of a deadlift suit. It fits what little I've seen for the heavy guys as far as comparisons go and it's the same number I got out of suits myself. It's also what I see my fellow lightweights get out of theirs, roughly. Interestingly enough, a super tight suit ain't better either, it just kills your positioning.
    The straps are a much bigger deal though. By far. Seems like around 390-410 kilos, a lot of the fatties (I use that word lovingly) just lose their grip (with very rare exceptions).

    I disagree on the part about strongmen and suits. Many strongman contest do NOT allow suits of any kind, like the Arnold Classic or the Shaw Classic. When athletes do the elephant bar deadlift or the hummer tire deadlift they have to go raw, a belt is all they're allowed.
    In fact, last year they included a squat for the very first time at the Arnold and they allowed squat suits, which was a very controversial decision.
    But for every other event, like frame carries, yoke carries, clean and press, stone lifting, etc. they do not weak any type of suit.

    Eddie definitely would have died if he'd kept going as he was. He was very smart to get out when he did.
    Thor's "in competition" is fine for me. It was o ersaw by WUS, plates and bar were weighed on the stream, and Magnus Ver Magnusson (not Jon Pall, may be RIP!) is a very impartial referee. It was during the height of covid lockdown and Thor could waste such a massive peak. Eddie is long known as the Giant's Live golden boy, the comp was ran more or less specifically for him. I think either Jerry Pritchett of Benni Magnusson (the other two to attempt 500kg) said they were definitely treated as second fiddle and the comp timings were done to suit Eddie as much as possible. Long winded way of saying I think the comp standards were actually pretty close between both.
    Dan Grigsby may do it raw in a powerlifitng comp soon enough.

    • @BuJammy
      @BuJammy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it was created for Hall, because he said 10 months before that, if the money was right, they should set up an event, and he would pull 500k. Pritchett said he and Benni were kept waiting ''for 45 mins between lifts'', when, in fact, the longest he waited was 29 mins (the average wait was around 25 mins for everyone). Either he is mistaken, or there's some sour grapes there. I think the Thor lift was more than good enough in terms of standards, but the fact that Hall leapt the record so much higher than it was, and nearly killed himself to do it, is what makes it the best for me.

  • @MellonVegan

    15:00 Comparing it to their bench or squat doesn't tell you much. They may just be built to deadlift. I knew someone like that. He did 322.5 at 86-ish bw sumo in training but his squat was at 245 and his bench only at 142.5. And he wasn't even better sumo, dude was stronger conventional but hurt his back, so had to make the switch. Just built to deadlift. Same height seated as a squatty mutual friend who is 13 cm shorter. Wingspan 15 cm in excess of his height, too. Some people are built like that.

    Krzysztof is the only one of those who was ever competing tested. He surely isn't drug free, but maybe he has taken less overall, than the others. He's also the lightest and his lifted weight is the highest. So I say he's most impressive. Jamal might still lift more in the future, he has huge potential and he's good at other movements as well. Thors was his own gym, most of the same for Eddie applied.
    Bennis 460kg was a one off event and apparently he wanted 480kg but they didn’t get it on the bar. Supposedly he did 460kg in the warm up room. But at least it wasn’t his own bar like the other two had and he had to travel across the Atlantic to do it.

    For sumo its another game ! If a man do 500kg 1100lbs in Sumo .... for valid him like a great athlete i discharge my self bar of 100kg (220 pounds) .... and i ask him to do a traditional DL with 880lbs (400kg) .... if he can do it HE IS A REAL SPORTMAN EVEN IF HIS TECHNIC FOR 25 LAST PERCENT IS NOT MINE...... BUT IF HE CANNOT PAST KNEES ...STAND UP AND LOCK BAR ON HIS BALLS AT 400KG , HIS 500 ARE JUST BARNUM TECH... A TRICK FOR LOOK STRONG ... its like you ask me my squats data for 2022 and i give you datae... of my Calfs extension or leg press machine exercises. You cannot evaluate my thigs strenght correctly.. when i see a Sumo DL ...i cannot perceive knees passing..sorry... its my feeling.

    Imagine Eddie or Thor slimming down 100kg, half their peak bodyweights. Allowing them to pull sumo, no deadlift suit, then comparing their deads to Krystoff. It's a different league, they would be nowhere near.

    Ban the sumo and add the weighted chin up to the powerlifting comps.

    Eddie can be a prick but he was and always will be the pioneer. There was something kind of pathetic about Thor pulling 501kg several years later in his little incubator of sycophancy. He'd have done 500.001 just to spite Eddie if he could.

      Eddie himself broke the record by just a kilo or a few, several times. Breaking records by a kilo is the norm, not the exception.

    Sumo is not valid for me. A pure Heresy. Deadlift bar.27mm . Elephant bar etc rtc for me is not a problem even i i prefer see use a 29 powerbar STRAPS IS NOW BEST METHOD FOR AVOID BICEPS INJURIES... but on a 29mm bar please . For comparison with me and my entourage . How can do Hall on a 29 rigid bar ???? 480 ?? Less ??

      He did 480 on an axle in wsm. Much stiffer than even a 29 mm bar
