Ya I found out some things too. Like if you hold a copper sulfate crystal in your hand for longer than 20 seconds it starts burning your skin. Also, if you accidentally drop a crystal on the floor, it will shatter. Hope you clean that really well, before the dog licks it, or missing pieces are injested by children.
Actually, the crystals formed are pure CuSO4, which will absorb water from the air and the surface will become CuSO4 - 5H2O which is crumbly. Also Copper(II) Sulfate is classed as a corrosive agent at high molarity. therefore the varnish is to protect it from the moisture in the air and protect your hands too.
@@Deviance190 Close but wrong, the crystals formed are CuSO4*5H2O (visible by its blue color), if you leave it in dry air, it can dry out and form CuSO4 (without the water), which will make a white crumbly solid on the surface.
Hi I'm trying to make the CuSO4 crystal now, but I have a question: How do you remove the thread (used to hang the cystal seed) from the grown crystal?Looks like it's contained in the growing crystal, and I think i'll destroy the crystal if I pull it out.
If the crystal contacts with heat, the heat will disolve the water, and the crystal starts to turn white, but then you can make it blue again with several methods
Say you get a big tray instead of a beaker and a lot more solution, will the crystals that form at the bottom of the tray keep growing as long as you keep reviving the solution?
Unfortunately, it isn't possible as crystallization is highly unpredictable, even with a mold there would always be unfilled empty spaces which would ruin the molded shape in the first place.
Does ambient temperature of the solution affectvthevrate of crystal growth? Can you manipulate the shape of crystal by introducing a strong magnetic field? Thanks, cool video.
Theoretically a magnetic field can affect the Cu2+(copper) and SO42- (sulfate) ions in the solution, but to make visible manipulations to the shape you'd need an extremely strong magnetic field, if it does work at all.
Yes but it's not nearly as beautiful. Plus ferrous sulfate oxidizes in air, so after a while your solution would contain a high concentration of iron (III) ion, and ferric sulfate would start to crystallize instead of ferrous sulfate, thus ruining the crystal.
If you dissolve more solute into a hot saturated solution of copper sulfate then put the crystal back into the super saturated solution it will grow much faster. Mine got to the size of my hand just in 2-3 weeks, and I am still growing it in a large pickle jar
@spencer6104 I wouldn’t recommend making pure copper sulfate from scratch for a newbie if that’s what you’re asking, if you choose to buy the premade chemical already from specific products then I say go for it as it’s easy and fun.
@@DIYbama Nope, absolutely not. I mean ya you could, but again, horrible idea. Its soluble in water, which means any rain or even moisture (ie humidity) would cause it dissolve. Which then releases the copper and causes copper poisoning. These crystals are on a list of the 9 most dangerous minerals because of their toxicity. You would not want to be wearing it at all (or even touching it alot for that matter, without gloves).
What kind of filter does he use? All I've used in my HS chemistry lab before is coffee filters. Any suggestions for a cheap but effective addition to my lab?
I buy a brand called zepp I believe it is. Its like a pond cleaner or something its been a long while since ive used copper sulfate but in the USA a quick google search will yield this product. Ive found it in menards and Lowes but I'm sure home depot probably carries it. The zepp brand copper sulfate is the purest. Nice chunky blue crystals. Other brands are a lighter blue which maybe lower purity but it could be different amount of water of crystallization idk.
I'm not gonna be that braggy one... what I do is instead of filtering off the crystals at the bottom, I just re-heat the solution every two or sometimes everyday, I have several solutions without crystals & a lid on, to prevent water evaporating. Then I just switch solutions once I re-heat the other one, and so on.
I'm sure any agricultural shop sells it. If there's some winery around you, you will definitely find it around because it is used as a spray against diseases of grapes. No license is needed.
wow that polycrystal was so amazing
- "Mom i am going to play with toxic crystals!"
- "Sure honey just come back for dinner"
PitsuMiwus rip kid
LOL
Lol
My mom lets me play with them. Also they aren’t toxic
Just opposite will happen😂😂😂
I literally stole some of my school’s material to do this xD
So do i, my copper sulfate are stien from my school, haha
You can buy it in gardening stores (root killer), it's cheap AF, no need to steal from your poor school :q
Go to battery shop and buy some H2So4 and make some that's easy.. 😂

Better to save money than spend it right?
I still love this video. I realllly love the ones you made. They're so beautiful.

What difference is there between the processes needed to make single crystals and polycrystals? Need to know thx
I’m pretty sure you just use a higher concentration of copper sulfate making it want to grow faster in other directions
Instructions unclear, house exploded.
wait why do we need to paint it with nail polish? and is it still toxic when crystallized?
For protection , you can touch it with bare hand then
I think this will help my daughter alot with her crystal project thnk u
The polycrystal looks cool
Thx soooo much. This was amazing!
Is there any difference between sulfate and sulphate?
No it’s the same thing . Some countries just spell it differently
Is there a way to some how determine its shape?
no it is due to the atomic structure
GFDE
Some sandpaper and time to let it grow.
In which wire they got seed to grow was that copper wire??
When you fiilter the solution each week do you need to add more copper sulphate to the solution or just carry on as it is
Wonderful video, I really like its colour and shape, just one question, is copper sulfate flammable?
No. It is not.
Aisha Kuri I’m scared to know why you are asking
Nope but corrosive when mixed w other chemicals
From the videos you like I thought this might interest you, I went to their internet site and found some pretty fantastic things.

Is it safe to make jewelery out of these singel crystals??
I know it’s 3 years later, but I wouldn’t cause you really shouldn’t be having it on your skin all of the time
Beautiful, the poly crystal looks like a Christmas tree kind of!!
I have a question. Do we get a larger crystal with a single crystal or with a polycrystalline? 🤔
when u finish using a crystal seed can u use another one n the same solution?
Yes
Don't think so cos the dissolved copper sulphate is crystalised on the string so there is less in the solution
What kind of store sells these kinds of materials?!
A pharmacy
does the water need to be distilled or just tap water
+suh suh you have asked a very good question, i always use distilled water to grow the crystal, especially the colourless crystal
@@DIYbama Does it have to be though???
@@teresahanna9631 no, it is not a must, but I suggest to use
do they grow into molds? like fill a test tube?
Will Cooper 2+ Sulphate on its own still work?
Yes
What's the purpose of the nail polish? Can I use spray varnish or even resin to lock in and protect it?
As the crystals have water in them, nail polish prevents it from drying out. Without it, it will dry up and be crumbly.

Can we use normal string for tying crystal seed
I am not suggested
That means we cannot use it???
Do you have to reheat the solution after filtering?
No
Can I use only copper sulfate?
Hi I'm trying to make the CuSO4 crystal now, but I have a question: How do you remove the thread (used to hang the cystal seed) from the grown crystal?Looks like it's contained in the growing crystal, and I think i'll destroy the crystal if I pull it out.
you should use a very thin fishing line as the thread, so that you no need to pull it out
I didn't understand.....how will fishing thread help
So you can cut it off and it wont be seen inside the crystal
I suppose you can try burning off the string if you have a stub, but I’m not sure how it will affect the crystal itself
If the crystal contacts with heat, the heat will disolve the water, and the crystal starts to turn white, but then you can make it blue again with several methods
I love it such a beautiful blue crystal
+Archana Sen me too, i have grow some red crystal and green crystal as well, i will share the video later
At the start of the video, you mentioned something about the copper sulfate being moderately toxic. Once they crystal is grown, is it still toxic?
Yes, if you don't eat the crystal, it is still very safe
@@DIYbama dont eat it lmao
*proceeds to eat crystal*
What happens if you dont paint them afterwards? Do they just wear away?
It’s to protect from moisture
3:08, Is the same procedure if I wait 3-4 months ?
Evidently, the longer you repeat the process, the bigger your useless, toxic, fragile crystals will be
@@redeyestones3738
Oh.. I didn't know
Thank you for this precision
Why nail polish? Does it melt if you touch it or is it toxic?
hey dude, what kind of cloth you use to filter the solution?
Say you get a big tray instead of a beaker and a lot more solution, will the crystals that form at the bottom of the tray keep growing as long as you keep reviving the solution?
How long can you leave this in its solution? How big can they grow?
Where do you get the filter from
Could we use regular table salt?
Why does it have to be filtered? Do you filter and then pour the liquid back into the original Crystal growing jar? Thx
Filter it to make sure the solution do not have any undissolved crystal, otherwise, they will grow in unwanted way at the bottom
would it be possible for these to grab a shape? like if i put the seed in some kind of mold?
Unfortunately, it isn't possible as crystallization is highly unpredictable, even with a mold there would always be unfilled empty spaces which would ruin the molded shape in the first place.
That would be dope af girl.
Is there a way to prevent it from dissolving after the crystals come in contact with water?
thats why we use nail polish to make it water proof
I am goin to try this but do you have to cut the fishing line off when it is ready??
yes, but no. The fishing line will still be on the inside of the crystal, no matter. But yes, because otherwise you'd have a crystal on a line
You said the crystal can be kept for a long time...please explain what happens and how long a long time is?
Hello, I'm totally new with making crystal. Can I reheat instead of filter the solution once a week?
After you have created a crystal, will it dissolve again? I want to make several large ones to put into my aquarium.
Bro the crystal is hazardous to fish
Do I HAVE TO filter it ?....
Poly crystal looks great
Clear nail polish, right?
Yea
Could it be copper sulfate with factory purity ? Or it has to be analytic purity ?
Saul Henandez 96% purity or higher at least, but the higher it is the clearer your crystals get.
omg its so beautiful
I'm new to the chemestry, but I like it.And I wonder if I need gloves to make this and if I need what type of glove.... leather or rubber?
+Nex0N glove is better, but if you do not touch the solution, it is no need, rubber is ok
It should be fine without gloves, just wash your hands afterwards.
Does ambient temperature of the solution affectvthevrate of crystal growth? Can you manipulate the shape of crystal by introducing a strong magnetic field? Thanks, cool video.

Can aluminum seed use this way to make?
I don't think so
Then how to raise Al seed?
Will be trying this right now (but with 100ml instead of 200ml) could any complications form?
You can also use 100ml
do you have to resaturate the solution before/after each filtering?

Can u use an coffee filter to filter the cipper sulfate water

Is it possible for the salt to be a different color or can you die the water?
Next question if you leave it out for longer will it get bigger?
No its not. Its not the water that gives it its color. Its the copper sulfate. Copper sulfate crystals are blue. You cant just die it another color.
