  • Join Ren Baron on an IFR flight from Albuquerque (KABQ) to Centennial Airport (KAPA) In Denver Colorado to see a concert at the world famous Red Rocks Amphitheater. On this day the winds were gusting across the runway at 22kts which made for a challenging landing.

I was checking out some of your older videos and came across this one. It caught my eye because I went to high school just a few miles from Red Rocks. Back when I was learning to fly (early 1970s) KAPA was Arapahoe County Airport (hence the APA designation). I flew out of Rocky Mountain Airport, then known as Jeffco, KBJC. Crosswinds can indeed be pretty fierce in this part of the country, and can change in a matter of minutes, as you discovered. Another thumbs up from me.

Steve- I discovered your channel yesterday and have binge watched all your vids. I really appreciate your showing how to work Garmin Perspective. I got my PPL in 1972 but have not flown in 20 years. I am buying myself a Cirrus SR22t for my birthday on November 18. Perfect timing.

Thanks for joining. I'm glad you are finding the videos helpful. There's alot to learn with that Garmin Perspective. I recommend you spend an extra $600 when you buy that Cirrus and get a ground power unit and spend some time on the ground going through all the screens to get comfortable. I've probably spent 75 to 100 hours on the ground doing that and it makes a huge difference! Cheers-Ren

Ren I appreciate your TH-cams and the time you put into them.
In this case, I would have let the tower know it is time to turn the airport around and not have a trailing tailwind, Remember they work for you.

Ren..another great video. Your co-pilot is getting really good !! You flew right past my house on the ABQ departure, nestled up against the foothills of the Sandia Mountains !! Super landing at KAPA !

Just another typical day at Centennial, other than it being so unusually quiet- it was my home base for 20 years. Those kinds of winds are common, so BTDT :). You did a great job with that landing. One other way of dealing with it would have been to ask for runway 28 - the one with the winds right down the runway.

Thanks for commenting! One of the things that I've learned in my short time as a pilot is that where ever you call your 'home' airport you get used to it and learn how to handle its nuances. When you travel away from 'home' its a whole new ballgame because you do not have the advantage of local knowledge. BTDT becomes N (ever) BTDT which makes it more challenging. But it also makes you a better pilot when you have to take what you've learned and apply it in an unfamiliar environment. It feels really good when you can pull it off! Cheers-Ren

Nice job, I just recently went out and practiced some strong crosswind landings, seems like when the winds are “Sporty” we tend to concentrate more and at times do a better job on our landings, when their calm, we “tend” to relax a bit, I need to stop that and treat all landing with the same amount of concentration... Again nice job on that slight tail I wind landing too, come on out to Kansas if you want to practice - HA!

I'm putting together a list of the best golf courses in each state. My goal is to fly to each state in the continental US and play the best course in each of those states. So you just might see me in Kansas next Spring. Cheers-Ren

"Wish You Were" here is one of my favorite Incubus anthems as well. I can still remember the first time I heard it. Last song recorded on Morning View. That song helped pay for my Cirrus!

@@TheRenBaron I remember listening to that album as I did chores around the house as a teenager. One of my favorites on the album is "Are You In." Such a great groove. Now, Dirk Lance has started a new group with one of my friends. It's a small world...

@@TheRenBaron That is such a complex and beautiful melody. So much better than the predictable pedestrian crap that is permeating the airwaves.

KAPA is where I learned to fly and got my PPL at age 17. But to tell you how long ago that was it was not called Centennial, it was Arapaho County Airport and it was uncontrolled at that time...LOL That was a while back! And whats GPS? LOL...Great flight. ;-)

95 knots ground speed at touchdown, that will turn some of your tires into smoke, nice job.

Thanks. I went back and I took a look at the 'game film' for the instruments and at the exact moment by main gear touches down I was showing 64 kias and 73 knots ground speed! Not bad all things considered. Thanks for your comments. Cheers-Ren
