    Watch certain kind of brushes the bristles can come off and get into your food. Keep the good work Chef Tom. Love Yoder! Blessings 🙏

    I don't have a Yoder, I don't have a pellet grill, I don't have even a metal grill, just a masonry barbecue, but I watched because Tom is nice.

    I appreciate you doing a cleaning video - much the way I have been doing things.
    I was pretty disappointed that any spills of sauce on the front of the grill met with paint flaking off within a day or two and then rust. I was surprised how deeply the rust had pitted the metal. I sanded back with an emery wheel (paper wheel) and then used a rotary wire brush to clean the surface before spraying with the touch up paint. Within 2 weeks the rust was reappearing (and grill had not been used). Also the touch up paint that is supposed to be able to be used in patches because it is a flat black ends up looking like it has been painted in patches. It is less than a year old YS640 stored indoors (always) and has never seen rain. Great unit but that finish is nothing to be proud of! Next round I will be using an engine enamel - can't be any worse and may even give me a surface that can be wiped clean.

      Thanks for the comment, Matt. I had the same issue. I was surprised at how quickly my YS640 went south. Haven't done any touch ups to it in 3 years and I'm so annoyed at how quickly the paint flaked off and rust set in. So annoying.

      make sure you got the right paint, there is a satin and flat (depending on when your grill was made). Mine calls for flat and it blends in exceptionally well the multiple times I have coated it. If the rust came right back you may not have completely removed the rust. This video isn't great, i've been in the coatings industry for 15 years, you have to remove all rust or it will bleed back through or pop the paint off. I have taken large portions of the front of mine down to bare metal, solvent wipe (denatured alcohol is my favorite), prime it, then apply the yoder paint and it will last until i get grease on the front of it again. I like denatured alcohol to make sure it removes any oils or salts present on the surface, I don't think simple green is strong enough for this purpose. I did decide recently to invest in the grease guard though. The rusting is also heavily dependent on your local environment, I live 35 miles from the bay near Houston and the salt in the air rust everything quickly.

    • @yambor44
      @yambor44 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@griffinjiujitsu what process did you use to take it to bare metal? I've sanded/painted mine twice now and the rust keeps coming back. I finally broke down and bought the stainless grease catch for the front.

    • @griffinjiujitsu
      @griffinjiujitsu 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@yambor44 I used a gravity fed hand held blasting gun with aluminum oxide. You can get them from Amazon or your local Harbor Freight store But you could also use a angle grinder with a sanding disc, just becareful not to go too aggressive on the grit or you'll leave scratches that the paint will protect but not "cover". An orbital sander will also work, point being something more than elbow grease. But the solvent wipe is just as important, paint is not impermeable to the contaminants our grills are subject too.

      Hey guys, I has some rust issues as well. I decided to try and oil the surface and bake on the oil - much like seasoning a cast iron skillet. I used a paper towel to rub olive oil all over the grill, then had a good cook to set the oil. It has worked really well. I season the surface at the end of summer always setting the oil with a cook so it doesn't go rancid. Your mileage may vary.

    Great to see a cleaning vid when much of everything else was cooking. Though I wish you would have done a deep cleaning internally too where you use soap and water and others to clean the belly of the grill.

    I bought a YS640S from ATBBQ. I really liked it, but keeping it clean was a chore. The breaking point for me was the extremely poor paint quality. All other elements of product quality are so good. Why do they skimp on the paint? I wonder what other companies provide a can of spray paint, acknowledging in advance that you don't just have to clean but you also have to fix peeled paint. My issues was a breakout of paint bubbles after keeping it covered during the cold rainy season in California for a few months. You can sand these blemishes and apply additional paint but it makes the grill look like is has leprosy. I gave mine away and bought a Kamado Joe. I haven't had one paint issue with the KJ.
