1. He rap. He was never an actual rapper. 2. His album went platinum thanks to the wrestling fans not because it was actually a good rap album. 3. He only dressed like that for his gimmick.
Cena was a full on rapper from 2002-2006. He rapped both his entrance themes and released a full rap album in 2005. Rapping Cena was what made him popular
John Cena recalled the moment that changed his career while traveling with his WWE co-stars, including Stephanie McMahon, in October 2002. He heard Rikishi and Rey Mysterio freestyling on the bus and joined in. "I remember just being like, let's go try this. Just dove right in, and it was like it resonated with me," he said on Ruthless Aggression documentary, which is where the infamous tuna came in. McMahon was so impressed she asked him to make up a few lines on the spot, and he did. "In two seconds I made a small rap about the tuna fish, the jetway, the plane we were about to go on, the destination. And then kinda closed it with a comment about Stephanie. She was like, 'Would you like to do this on television?', I said, 'Absolutely,'" Cena remembered.
John Cena is actually a rapper IRL. As a matter of fact, his rapping saved his career. John debuted in June 2002, but by October, his career was dead in the water. He was bland and had no personality. During a tour bus, John joined a few wrestlers at the back in a rap battle, and John destroyed them with his free-style. Stephanie McMahon heard it and asked if he was willing to rap on TV, and well... the rest is history.
Yeah. He also had a full ass album with other underground rappers and that album did well to the point where Vince and WWE asked him to perform the songs from his album on Monday night raw in the early 2000s.
When John Cena started in WWE in the early 2000's, that was his gimmick. Being a Marky Mark-esque white rapper, that was his "Dr. of Thuganomics" gimmick and he even had a different theme music. But later on he became what we all know him for. Have you seen him in The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker? If not, watch it, Cena is incredible in them!
Eminem was huge at the time Cena started the rapper gimmick. He went from bland babyface who was about to get released to being so good of a heel and the good freestyle raps about his opponents that fans started to like him and WWE had to turn him back to a babyface, but when he started his current version in 2005 is when some fans started to hate him for going away from the rapper gimmick.
LOL how have yall not seen his Dr of Thuganomics character. thats what he did he rapped, battel rapped other wrestlers, freestyled. He actually can rap, he actually pretty good too, both of his into music themes were written and performed by Cena btw. Cena was a legit rapper from 2002-2006. Its actually what got him a spot on the show bc Stephanie heard him battle rapping some other people in the back stage and she loved it and asked him if he would rap on TV, and the character of John Cena the Dr. of Thuganomics was born, he was a heel and the rest is history. This character and his last couple years wrestling were my 2 fav eras of his career.
I’ve seen John give so many savage moments in his time in WWE but I’ll NEVER forget 3 scorching hot promos he hit us with involving AJ Styles, Roman Reigns & The Rock, where he “lit up” the ring, our ears & our minds & left those 3 guys absolutely speechless 🤭🤭🤭. The Rock especially was PISSED OFF at him 👍😂
I personally enjoyed and love Cena's thugonomics gimmick because he was hilarious/funny with that gimmick which is my favorite gimmick of his entire WWE career regardless of who thinks it's corny/lame. Like Cena said' half of the people hate him for being loyal to the WWE and want him to go but they can't get rid of him which i like that statement of his. If i were i pro wrestler with a gimmick that some fans hate me for' i would use that as fuel to piss them off harder with my promos. I think one of the reasons why he got away with his earlier gimmicks is because people back then weren't so easily offended like today's society. Also, It's a free country so fans have the right to wear corny/lame hats and sweat suits that they want.
The two best eras of Cena were back when he was doing the heel Doctor of Thuganomics bit, and then last year when he played Peacemaker. He had a few gems between, though. He was the only guy to ever throw Rock off his game in a promo battle, and that's saying a hell of a lot.
John Cena actually has two songs with Wiz Khalifa believe it or not and he's rapped both of his theme songs. Edit: he also made a rap album (that included his current theme, "my time is now") and it went platinum within a week I believe.
One missing on here was when he was rapping about Kenzo Suzuki. Kenzo had woman with him that had white makeup around her face. Cena got to her and told her "I don't do makeup, but I can sure help with the white face." Yep, Cena went there. Parents of kids who where fans of later John Cena would have been mortified if they knew their kids liked the guy who use to make raps like that.
John was an actual rapper. He had a full album that went platinum in the early 2000s. His songs did so well that Vince McMahon asked him to perform the songs from his album on Monday night raw which he did with some of the features on his album. the guy was really good at rapping. He stopped rapping in like 2006 and focused on his wrestling and acting but he did do some of the theme songs for some of the WWE 2k games.
John Cena is actually quite a really good rapper and raps his theme songs. If you haven’t had a chance to go listen to his song basic Thugonomics or his current song my time is now or he even had a song that he did with somebody called bad bad man
His rapper character is what got him over. He was a heel at first but got over and became babyface. Over the years the rapper gimmick evolved as John got more famous and it evolved into the boy scout John Cena. He still dressed like the rapper but he was WWE's golden boy so he had to be a goody two shoes
Fun Fact: Cena was almost fired but then someone (I believe Stephanie Mcmahon) heard him freestyling in the back of the wrestler's bus. then they tried that out on TV and everyone loved it. So, that's the reason he stayed with the company and became one of the greatest of all times.
Actually loved the rapper gimmick, and before that he was fire in the ring when he first showed up on TV. Everything from "the marine" and after just killed the character for me.

Yes that was real! It was his Dr. of Thuginomics gimmick. John not only used to a rapper (he made a rap album a while back) but he was also born and raised in the hood of west newberry, Mass. Yes Cena is from the hood
In case no one mentioned it before here in the comments , when Cena made the comments about "hanging with a marine" he was referring to the movie he starred in called "The Marine".
Well, if it wasn't for Stephanie McMahon hearing Cena rhyme backstage back in 2002, you wouldn't even have a John Cena's Most Savage Moments, nor would he have been able to carry the WWE flag for over 10 yrs! Plus, it's WWE, you know good and damn well he wasn't gonna be able to rap rap... though, he did challenge Jay Z to a freestyle battle at WrestleMania XIX back in 2003... nothing became of it though, as Hov didn't take Cena seriously! That rappin gimmick was his ticket to becoming the WWE Champion at WrestleMania 21, and he's been legendary ever since! Also, John Cena dropped his rap album way back in 2005... it went Platinum! An he raps his own theme song... BOTH of them 'Basic Thugganomics' & 'My Time Is Now' #CeNation
This is how Cena got over in the first place. That whole rapper character - the doctor of thuganomics, he was a heel and he got over with fans for being funny. Similar with Austin and The Rock, they were heels and got over with fans massively. This video doesnt show a lot of his good lines or pieces, there's a lot. 2003 and 2004 especially. Oh and that rapper character was cause of the movie 8 mile was so popular that they used it as a gimmick with John Cena.
Stephanie McMahon told him that he would be fired if he didn't change his image when he first entered the WWF. John Cena's brother died in Afghanistan. His whole salute to the military is in honor of his late brother, who was a Marine.
Those raps actually saved his career because he about to be let go so Stephanie McMahon actually heard him free-styling on the bus and said keep doing it
John Cena would’ve been fired if he didn’t do that rapper act. It’s what made him popular. Also, the Marine thing is because he was in a movie called “The Marine” that came out around that time.
Not to be disrespectful towards y’all, but you guys no nothing about John Cena. You do realize he started of his career with raps; it’s what jump-started his career. Not to mention the fact that he had a successful album (one of which is his popular theme song). Just saying. John is one of the GOATS!
John Cena, he's the 16th time world heavyweight WWE champion 🏆, proven himself that he has been the greatest of them all he was a rapper doing his incredible lines as the doctor of thuganomics and he has been proving himself that he is and still the greatest WWE Superstar of all time throughout his career. And I don't care what nobody says or fixed John Cena is proofing that he is still the best.
Rapping is what made Cena. Who started growing away from it in 2006 or late 2005, but if it wasn't for rapping, he would have been fired. Some of his stuff was corny, but it was entertaining, and that was the point. Regardless, he was a beast on the mic.
cena was on the verge of gettin fired in 2002 and when he was freestylin on the plane stephanie mcmahon took notice nd instead used it for his gimmick so basically that freestying gimmick saved his entire career
John Cena was saved, because he could rap. His character was called "The Gangster of Thuganomics", and without this, he would've been fired. He talks about hanging out with Marines, because he was in a movie called the Marine(decent movie). John also has his own rap albums out, and his theme song is one of his own raps, called "My Time is Now", or "You Can't See Me"
The doctor of thug economics AKA the "marky mark" you guys are referring to actually skyrocketed John's career and got him over with the fans that lead to main event level rivalries and storylines. Then he became something totally different. He didn't need to rap on his opponents and now is one of, if not the best of all time. In order to appreciate the savagery of his raps you actually have to go back and watch The Ruthless aggression Era from 2003 to 2007. you can't truly understand them by looking at cut off clips. No, I'm not even a fan of John Cena's not anymore.
This was John Cena as the dr of thuganomics which is the character that I want WWE to brink back for John cenas last run in the company I get why you think it’s corny because you just don’t get it
John Cena was in a movie called “The Marine”. His brother I believe was a Marine . When he got his start he had no personality, his gimmick was a Cyborg in OVW. That was horrible. Stephanie McMahon heard his freestyle on the bus and boom he was Marky mark.
When he first came to wwe he was bringing those thugnamonics lol he was hilarious at free styling lol b rad was hilarious too lol plus that chick he ended up with dam lol
Some lines hit, some don't. Since the Doctor of Thuganomics rap gimmick was done in 2002-2006 it was a different time plus a lot of those clips were cut up and not in context so it wasn't as funny or savage.
Bruh, them corny ass freestyle raps you guys were flaming him for is what saved his career in the first place. Talkin bout how John got away with it? C'mon man have you seen y'alls reactions, you found it ridiculous and hilarious at the same time fans at that time reacted the same and resonated with him. At the time John was pulling this gimmick in 03-05 Eminem was popular in the market and his hilarious raps were being played all around which is why John also gets a pass and benefited from his hilarious "bars." Right now, you won't catch John spitting no rhymes but I guarantee you back in those days he'd find a way to flame you.
