    I still have an i7 from 2013 and I still do development work on it but the M1 is really impressive! If I had to purchase a computer today, I would probably go with the M1 Pro 16" base model! It is a beast!

      The most unimpressive thing is the soldered SSD which results in a dead and repair less computer in a few years

    My “vintage” MacBook Pro still does a great job. I can’t help but feel that the M1 chip is “cheating” somehow. How could this be ? Tiny little chip, runs cool and fast , no fans needed ... was the intel chip so really terrible in comparison ? I have trouble accepting this. What’s the “secret sauce” ?

    • @AZisk
      @AZisk  4 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      The M1 a different architecture that’s more efficient (ARM), and it also has an integrated system of cores and memory. The “cheating” part is that you can’t upgrade anything

    The 13" MacBook Pro with Intel Core i5-4258U CPU @ 2.40Ghz is actually Late 2013 model. Not 2015. The Early 2015 13" MacBook Pro (the last one before Apple dropped the SD slot) has i5 5257U @ 2.7GHz or i5 5287U @ 2.9GHz.

    How good is the old MacBook pro for a Computer science student?

  • @lovemadeinjapan
    @lovemadeinjapan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Luckily only very few people need building XCode on a cramped 13 inch screen.
    For normal 13 inch on-the-go work, the difference is not so big. 80% of the power consumption is for the screen, and the old one has a 50% larger battery. Also the 400 nit P3 display has potentially more power consumption than sRGB 300 nits. Combine that with better ports, a much cleaner and sturdier built, a better range of OS-selection (incl. Linux and Windows, but also the best OSX Mojave) and above all the stellar price, a nice kept 2015 is only 300 bucks today, and feels every bit as modern as the M1. The 2015 even boots faster!

  • @The_RedVIII

    Appreciate the comparison. I'm still using an early 2015 Macbook, but man, the retina screen is broken (seeing green dots all over it when under natural light, although you can't see it at all when using the Macbook indoors, so it works there), the battery is broken (usable for maybe 3 to 4 hours max until it has to be charged again), and bluetooth doesn't work anymore. I would like to hold off for a Macbook Air with Mini LED and no bezels, but that probably won't happen until late 2022, so I don't know. I'm probably going to wait at least until the next Apple event.

    The price difference of MACs in the US vs in Central Europe is ridiculous. A nice 256Gb 2015 MacBook Pro costs in Hungary (where I live) about 700 US dollars worth of money. Maybe 600 if not in perfect condition. Adding that the American wages are usually about 3 times higher means a used mac may be15! times cheaper for a US buyer than for a central-eastern European one.15! Now, If I wanna add a 1TB SSD, then I am talking 800$. Straight appalling. You guys not only have a great economy but freaken' low prices. Wtf. I guess what we get is free healthcare, cheap housing, and cheap booze, clubs and services. I will need to add this up sometime. Sorry, got a bit carried away.

      Wasn't Hungary about female aesthetics? USA has no answer to that.... Be easy on the booze and enjoy looking at someone or touching your own body, depending on your gender and preference. Here it is literally in the middle. Used MBP in good condition 300-350€, wages decent, expensive-but-solid healthcare and most important, time to enjoy short/few working days and being a bakfietsmom part-time.

    One very interest and let's say important point on this topic: I think ( like me) a lot of people noticed that a computer getting tired in years.
    As an example: "8GB Ram + i5 CPU computer" after 4-5 years of intensive usage, does not have the same performance as before.
    If I'm not right, and this issue related only to old HDDs, please correct me.
    Thank you !

      This is not true. Next time you get a new computer, run a benchmark. Run the benchmark again several years later. Unless something is really really wrong with your computer, the benchmark result will be the same.
      I know that the performance of the main program I'm working on has not changed by a single percent during the 5 years and a half I have been using my mid-2015 15 inch Macbook Pro (Core i7).

    2015 MacBook Pro, 500gb ssd, only 169 battery cycles on original battery. I use it only for investing, trades (no day trading), charting, etc. It seems very good and speedy still to me. But we all know that that means nothing!!!! I want a m2 MacBook Air with 16gb, 556 ssd...I feel guilty about it. And I can get it reasonably cheap with Apple refurbished and the military discount.
