The lyrics address the concerns of a young man reconsidering his decision of joining the British Army. From verse to verse, examples are given as to why the young man wants to leave the British Army. The song is of Irish origin and has circulated both inside and outside the army since Victorian times. Singers would insert the names of those British soldiers they disliked.

The 6 counties in the North were arbitrarily chosen to be partitioned from Ireland to retain a loyalist majority, there's nothing democratic about disregarding a vote and just taking the part that likes you.

You’d be surprised how many men from the Irish Republic still serve the ranks of the British Army. A tradition that has no signs of ending anytime soon. I’m a reservist, my MT Staff Sergeant’s great grandfather served with the Irish volunteers in the GPO in Dublin 1916. I’ve just come off deployment with the UN, a lad in my platoon is from Dublin. Another in my unit is from County Kerry. When I was in basic we had numerous Northern and Republic of Ireland recruits. We were ordered to call them ‘Paddy’.

It is unfortunate that Northern Ireland isn’t Irish but the population has been fully anglicised and even in proper Ireland only 40% speak Irish.
Unfortunately not. 40% *can* speak it, but the vast majority of those can speak it because of and only used it while in education. the amount of people that actually use it as their language of choice is far smaller, usually constrained to a few specific areas of Ireland, even in the Gaeltacht only 66% of people use it as their primary langauge. So about 2% of the population overall.

A lot of the protestant population of Northern Ireland (so a large part of the population) can trace their roots back to Scotland and to an extent northern England. the Ulster-Scots language which is relatively common in Northern Ireland has its roots in the Scottish language Scots. There is also a reason the oldest recorded record of Irish writing was found in south Wales, cause of the Irish coming over and forming a kingdom that lastest many many years. Now I ain't supporting all the horrific stuff the British establishment did in Ireland but you yourself needs to read a history book.
