I'm not a gun owner, but before I retired I was in the woodworking business for years. Sometimes folks would ask for a better price than I proposed, and the answer was always the same: I offer my work at the best price I can, so there's no room to go any lower. It makes perfect sense to me. Best luck, and cheers.

Been there and done that. The markup on new firearms is downright pitiful. The only way to make any sort of real profit is on used firearms, accessories and service.

    • @onionhead5780
      @onionhead5780 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

Yep. Retired now. But when I was in business, our inexpensive firearms got customers in the door and then we made the majority of our profits from the retail priced accessories.

I simply contact a few gun shops and ask them their best price for a certain firearm. Whoever can give me the best price shipped to my FFL wins. I totally understand you are in business to make a profit but I go to work everyday to earn a living. My dollar means just as much as yours so don't ask me not to shop around for the best deal I can find.

This person here IS the FFL, who does a bit of legwork to find the best deals for her clients. Since she's not a manufacturer, she's probably not in your supply chain unless you move to the state and start buying from her directly.

General rule is only 10% mark up on most firearms. No one is going to get rich selling guns. People are also cheap and don’t care about your business, don’t waste your time educating them.

SUGGESTION: Charge a ‘finders and pricing fee’ of $50 or more for quote requests. If they end up buying you can apply a percentage of the fee towards the purchase. NO business owner should work for free.

I recently bought a new handgun and a rifle. I asked what they cost to see if my wallet could afford it. That was the end of that when I said I'll take them. I'm just doing my part to keep these businesses local before there aren't any around. I used to wholesale on the side before, but these are much different times today.

    I support my local guy.
Ive bought maybe 13 guns off him in the past year. I always ask, hey im looking for X, ive found it for Y online, can you get close?
If hes within $200 of it, im happy. Example - Looked for a Zastava AK, online i could buy it for 1100, he said he could get it for me for 1200. Told him to do it.
It came in within 2 days. I gave him $100 tip for his service. We sit down, he helps me put on the optics, find whatever ammo i want, we talk about it, learn tricks and tips about it together, then i go show off my new toy for you getting him more buisness.
Some people need to stop looking at just the price of the gun, but understand that you are also paying for a service, and relationship with your local seller.

I'm a self employed plumber and simply stopped taking phone calls and doing free site visits a year and a half ago or so. And that's made me money. By saving me from wasting time on dead end leads. I respond to all texts and emails by finding out if the potential new customer wants a mutually beneficial relationship or is a time sink parasite.
Granted I'm in a service based industry ( I instruct my customers to purchase their own bug ticket items in order to avoid the necessary markup I'd tack on) but there must be a strategy you brick and mortar guys could implement to cut out those types. Overhead and in this case inventory makes or breaks most businesses and the "something for nothing" crowd must be made to realize that. Otherwise it's a parasitic relationship not a symbiotic one. And that's how you get bled dry.
No, the customer isn't always right and no you don't need every customer. Good luck!

When you support a business and you want to barter away the price. Don’t be surprised if they act the same way with you if you have any issues with the product. If price is the biggest and the foremost important factor when purchasing a product. Then you are a shopper not a customer. Btw with regards to the price of guns, freedom isn’t free or cheap.
Remember the big box stores was to eliminate the small independent gun dealers. And the powers that be want this also because they can control the box stores.

I work hard for my money, and I look for the best deal. Everyone does FFL transfers, but do you go to the shop that want's $100 or the one that want's $20. Me I go to the one that wants $20. Your in business to support yourself and I'm in business to support myself. Just like you don't go with the highest price vendor on everything you buy for your store, or you would be out of bossines

Way back in the day I worked in inventory control and in purchasing for a small hardware chain. People don't understand variable pricing, some items you can put a 2.1 markup on and then offer incentive pricing, certain tool accessories come to mind. People thought that same thing about the tool itself, we used to sell a popular brand of cordless drill for $5.00 over cost. What we called the "Gingerbread" were the accessories, if you weren't making add-on sales then you were cutting yourself short. Stationary power tools like table saws weren't much different, minimal markup on them, but the $100 blade made you $50 or more. The firearms industry is even less forgiving, and it's regulated far more than retail/commercial tool sales.

It's all about how the dealer buys. If the dealer doesn't have the right connection for the absolute best price, guess what, the other dealer does. Buds guns is paying way less than this young lady and she cannot compete with that. She has to know this. The internet has exposed the price differences. I've had small dealers tell me "I cannot buy that gun for that price".
That said, the small dealer doesn't have the buying power the huge dealer does. It's that simple.
I always try and buy local unless I'm getting royally hosed. That's with anything.

Support your local gun store. The government is doing their best to drive them out of business so all transactions will be online with a "government approved" vendor. When you go to your local gun store, you can hold it and feel it and get advice from someone who knows their stuff. If you want something they don't have in stock, order it through them instead of buying it online. It may be a little bit more, but it's worth it. It is really hard to run a gun store nowadays with all the stupid regulations. And don't be a Fudd. Join the NRA or GOA. They are fighting for our rights. Feed the tree that feeds you.

The price on GunBroker for a new rifle was less than the distributor price my local shop could order it from. Why ask for a discount. Maybe because there might be one. Maybe it's a manufacturer discount that can be applied. Or like when I had a business, I gave military and senior discount, I gave discount for referrals and repeat customers.
Personally I like it when a business does like I did and asks if the customer qualifies for a military or senior discount. or any discount that may be had. So I don't have to ask if there are any. A business that offers without me asking is a business that I'm more likely to purchase from again and again. Even if that discount is only $5 it makes me happy. I can buy my gun, and my ammo then take my $5 savings and go buy an ice-cream cone with a smile on my face.

But there is a lot of time involved in earning that $100 besides the time to research, order, receive, and stock, there is time to answer questions and complaints. There are costs of having a business place and insurance... and income tax. It's not really even $100. Lucky if you get to keep $50. Let the discount shoppers walk and hang in there.

I got tired of shopping for customers, never having the exact gun in stock, then to make $50 on a $500 gun. All while FedEx makes $100.

33% markup is considered the break even point for most physical stores in most industries. Meaning at that markup they make ZERO profit after overhead.
Gun stores face regulatory and legal issues no other industry does. I wouldn't hold a 40% or even 50% markup against them knowing that.
Online stores are cheaper in most industries, especially large volume ones, because they don't have the same costs a physical store would.
Online gun stores also get to skip some of the regulatory things physical gun stores deal with since they don't do the background check and don't have to keep records of it. The cheapest price will always be online unless the physical store is having a going out of business sale.

It's the ammo and other items that have the much larger percentage of mark up.

People aren't in business to give things away, it doesn't matter what business you are in. You can't go to Walmart and dicker on the price. If you don't like the price, shop around.

Glad you're a 2 a supporter - but there's very little profit margin in gun stores once all the overhead is subtracted.

Gun sales are like commercial passenger airlines selling tickets. The airline doesn't make much profit from ticket sales. Their profit is in the cargo the airline carries. A gun store doesn't make much profit selling guns, but makes a good profit from accessories and ammunition they sell. This is why it's very important to stop buying online what a local store sells; only buy online what they don't.

I can just order it off-line cheaper than you can get it and just pay you a $20 transfer fee. I do that all the time.

Feel your pain, I was in fishing tackle and bait there was almost zero profit in rods and reels any money we made was in all the ancillaries like bait line and terminal tackle 🤦🏼‍♂️ to make things worse you would always get the people that trolled around saying I can get it $5 cheaper down the road etc, just hard work making ends meet.

I went to look at a high end AR that the store wanted $2000, I found it online for $1600, I don't mind paying a little more to a local, but $400 is too much. Daniel Defense DDM4 V7. I did pay a little more and got 1600 rounds from that store that I could have got cheaper online, but we need to support out locals when we can.

If you can't afford a Ruger or Smith & Wesson, just buy a Charter, RIA, or Taurus. They work just as good, but with less fit and finish. There are also budget ARs like PSA for just $500 and they are good quality, also the Maverick 88 is only about $200. If you can't afford that, pick up some overtime or cut back on visits to the jiggle room.

Where I work the mark up is the same, either new or used. Other products are marked up from what we have pay for them slightly more. People think we can order them straight from the manufacturer at a deal. In reality we have to order through a distributor
