    The auger doesn't need to be run at full 540 rpm - you'll have better control at about half that speed. When finishing the hole, it can be effective to auger down to depth, stop PTO and extract. A lot more of the dirt will stay on the auger instead of falling back in.

  • @TheSledgeNZ
    @TheSledgeNZ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    Though I’ve not seen the whole video and may have missed it, I also used a post hole borer to dig holes for trees, 97% of which died as a result. I learned afterwards that if you use a tree auger (a conical shape vs a cylinder) there was little risk of 'glazing' the walls of the hole, which prevent root penetration. For what it’s worth...

    • @SparkyMcBiff
      @SparkyMcBiff 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Actually they did mention that in this video that it is important to realize that you have to break up the side walls of an auger made hole in order for the roots to make penetration.

    I never got to plant young trees with bare roots as a landscaper, and it's fascinating to see how different it is from planting big root ball trees. For instance, you never dig the hole for a root ball tree deeper than you want it to sit, because the disturbed soil will cause it to sink, and the trunk will rot from contact with the wet soil. Thanks so much for filming all this for us!

    Cody, I have been subscribed for years. I love your faith, I love your content. You're a lot like me. If I had a channel, it would be much like yours. I have a gripe/suggestion/knowledge tidbit for you, and hope you don't take offense sir. I mentioned it when you got the tractor, but maybe you didn't see it, and I do understand why. I grew up on a large dairy farm, we had many, many tractors of all sizes. We used them for everyday chores, but mainly for harvesting hundreds of acres of crops for feed for the herd. I worked on other farms with my family and also with neighbors for tobacco, corn, soybeans, etc. What I mentioned before is that you shouldn't use throttle and RPMs so much on your tractor. My bosses would have killed me if I ran an engine so fast all the time. That diesel has enough torque to work through most anything at about an idle engine speed. Use gears, not RPMs. Respectfully submitted Sir.

  • @saltydawg5489

    way to complicate a pretty simple thing! couldnt actually watch the whole thing. basics of planting a tree are, dig your hole wider than deep, plant the tree at the same depth as it was before, look for the soil stain on the base of the trunk and dont put it any deeper than that. put the tree in along with a couple of sturdy stakes, half fill with soil then water to settle the soil, fill the rest of the hole and water again. I dont ever recommend pruning at this time because the plant will use the nutrient stored in the stems to grow roots, the tips may die back as the nutrient is redirected to the roots. dead branches can be pruned off at any time otherwise care for your tree according to its needs then prune in the second winter. hint pruning in winter promotes lots of growth (suckers) that can be used to build up your tree, and summer pruning will dwarf your tree, so after your tree is the size you want, stop winter pruning . take some time and learn how pruning of mature apples and pears is different than mature plums cherries and peaches

    • @StarLight-yk6es
      @StarLight-yk6es 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've believe pruning the roots , especially the tap root , effects the growth of the tree , stunting it.
      This is done purposely , when miniaturising a tree for Bonsi ,thus evedential proof of what I'm here sharing :)
      I'd leave the tap root alone , the ones in this vid are very much cut back !!!

    • @matthemberry
      @matthemberry 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The pruning was done right. I was always taught to bury the tree to the graft and to prune them to nothing. This tree is really short. You need to prune fruit trees every winter to maintain them. I don’t think he did anything wrong but it is a pretty simple process.

    All trees are born with their root flare level at grade. Thus bare root tree in video installed too deeply, and suffocated roots need to grow up toward surface now. Most B&B stock arrives too deep in rootball from Nursery, and requires root flare excavation before installing.
