This is one of those movies that got it's fair share of attention when it came out but has since become somewhat forgotten about and never quite reached the level of cult classic status it maybe deserves.
In Germany, in addition to the “normal” Christmas films, numerous psychological thrillers, films with a horror touch and incredibly brutal action films were (and still are) shown on free TV over Christmas (in the evening from 10 p.m. and at night). I think it doesn't matter what time of year it is or what holiday it is, as many different films as possible should be shown and everyone can decide for themselves what they want to watch. 😁
I very much think of it as a christmas movie, even if not a particularly festive one. It’s not exactly a virgin birth but the symbolism is very insistent on making the comparison.
When this movie first came out i made and sold pirate DVDs and gave this one around to a few friends for free because i liked it but was always creeped out my mates mom had worked in social services for 30+ years and her reaction was yep that's this country in 50 years or so? As a teenager i just laughed but never forgotten and creepy how every year we are getting closer to this future
It's not a horror film - but it is horrifying... Absolutely brilliant piece of work, criminally underwatched, tough viewing but something I always recommend.
Well done. This movie checks alot of boxes from a technical perspective and emotional perspective. The religious motif and sifi sensibilities. Glad you had thoughtful remarks and an insightful perspective. well done.
This is a great pick. I have been thinking about this movie a lot. I feel this is a possible future for us for the way we play God here on earth. The earth is not playing with you about nothing. And yes the gypsy woman is the MVP of this movie!!👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
It’s our possible future, but in some places in the world it’s a current reality. If you consider this movie as more than entertainment, you’re confronted by the question, what are you going to do about it? What are we going to do about it? How do we resist without becoming just as bad as those we are resisting? (This movie didn’t cut the rebels any slack. They’re just as villainous as the fascists.) If enough of us had gotten off of our asses in 2015-16, we might not be this close to American Fascism (or Christian Nationalism or White Christian Nationalism or whatever you want to call it). Same deal in 2020 and this past year, 2024. Each election that we squander makes it harder the next time. Don’t get me twisted, I don’t think politics* is the answer or that politicians will solve our problems. That’s fantasy. But rule of law and democracy, such as it is, gives us breathing space to make the world better and to make society more humane, starting with our communities, starting with our neighbors. If we don’t protect our democracy, flawed as it is, everything will be worse and progress will be incredibly difficult. *particularly political dogmas, no matter how well intentioned
I recently watched the 2001 Mexican movie ‘Y tu mama tambien’ also directed by Alfonso Cuaron. It was amazing not only writing wise but also the direction is stunning. One of the best movies I’ve seen. I think you would love it
Watching this the first time years ago, I only felt the western religious undertones. The world is ending and we have an “undesirable” refugee who is bringing forth the future. Now with 2024 America eyes, I can appreciate the art of it. How many times have you seen of a shooting on the news or bombing and then go to work? Great pick for this holiday season.
I’m pretty sure that inflatable pig is a reference to one of Pink Floyd’s cover albums. “Higpnosis” is the name of the graphic designers who made many of the iconic covers for “Pink Floyd”. Hypgnosis released a giant inflatable pig into the sky, lost the rope/tether and quickly managed to snap a picture before it drifted away. There’s many other weird pics/designs they’ve made in the 70s that have stayed in British pop culture throughout the decades.
i remember seeing this in theaters. everyone in theater, it seemed to me, was totally blown away. it was a surprise to me that it didn't gain traction, and sort of left theaters rather quickly. i'm glad it got rediscovered by the internet. a remarkable film, and a remarkable director.
The inflatable pig is a shout out to a 1977 Pink Floyd album Animals. It was tethered to Battersea power station in London, for the album cover. To represent one of the songs featured on it called Pigs (three different ones) the album is based on George Orwell's Animal farm.
This is another of those movies I remember when it came out, hearing people talk about being 'too over the top' and 'unrealistic'. Similar to hearing people express disbelief that the soldiers in 28 Days Later went feral so quickly.
Excellent insight into this movie guys! The pig floating in the air outside of the wealthy guys place is a reference to the album cover of the Pink Floyd album 'Animals' which in itself is a record about the excesses of the modern world.
Just discovered this channel and you two gents are great, so I am definitely subscribing and liking! I really love this movie too and I think it is, so far the best movie of the 21st century.
Those long, uncut camera shots are a hallmark of Alfonso Cuaron's directing style. It requires meticulous planning and hours and hours of rehearsals. Cuaron would also use this filming technique in Gravity, also worth a watch. Children of Men is technically science fiction, but has some very heavy philosophical overtones. It envisions the different ways humanity copes with its own extinction, as an inevitability on a short time cycle. Then envisions a glimmer of hope and the subsequent desperation to claim it or exploit it. It's a powerful piece of cinema that film students will be studying for a century. Great reaction guys.
@dallesamllhals9161 Opening night, in the local Regal theater. Then I bought it on DVD, and now own it on Bluray. I've probably seen it at least ten times.
This movie is a top 10 for me. Idk why it’s underrated but some of the best story and filming I’ve ever seen and it never fails to do exactly what it intends. It’s not a scary movie but it’s horrifying and makes you wonder.
I watched this in the theater while I was about 7 months pregnant, Dec 2006, I think. That was pretty weird, tbh, considering the subject of the movie.
Okay, I watched this film tonight-- Christmas night, as I now know quite appropriate :) -- because I saw this posting! And YES!!! EXCELLENT choice!!!! THANKS for this!!! (Looking forward to your forthcoming react/review of the #DoctorWho #DoctorWhoChristmasSpecial #JoytotheWorld!!!) And Happy Kwanzaa, guys!!! #ChildrenofMen #CliveOwen #MichaelCaine #dystopian #AlfonsoCuaron
Great movie! - glad you guys enjoyed it and sorry to see you got a cold dude!.. really odd but from watching you struggle I feel like I have a runny nose too now!!.. is that even possible? Add Cloud Atlas (its 3 hours but don't be put off - it goes fast and lots of different stories from different timezones and genres intertwine) and Adaptation to the list
The director of photography is Emmanuel Lubezki (Chivo). He was also in charge of the cinematography for masterpieces such as The Tree of Life, Gravity, and The Cat in the Hat.
That movie singlehandedly made me realize that I wouldn't want to survive a nuclear holocaust. The lucky ones are the ones who die in the blast. That was a bleak, honest, horrific movie. Lasting impact for sure.
22:34 No one has had children in 18 years. Animals would be the closest we could relate to children as humanity takes care of pets. They give us companionship and something to fight for in place of children. Surrogates basically
Yes in the book she talks about women pushing cats in prams as they had become substitute babies. Some of the descriptive parts of the book get lost in a movie.
His cousin is in charge of “The Ark of the Arts” a post infertility British program that collects what they perceive to be the world’s greatest works of Art from the rubble of a collapsing civilization. It is the real David (Michelangelo) in the hall and the real Guernica (Picasso) in the dining room. Pink Floyd’s inflatable Pig is floating in the background as another acquisition. Why are they doing this? Maybe it’s in case some alien civilization one day discovers this planet it will find what this group considers to be the pinnacle of our creative achievement.
@@cthulhuwu_ never saw that but I did read this book. In either the film or the book Theo says as much when remarking on the futility of them hoarding it all when there will soon be no one left
It's like Theo said, once everything went to shit it was too late to fix things. The conversation around open borders is always too emotional. Yes it's good to help ppl but creating a chaotic environment similar to the one immigrants are fleeing from isn't a good idea for anyone. Immigration can't be the default answer to everything, it should be a last resort. Every attempt should be made to help stabilize the country they are fleeing from so they don't need to flee. That's a hard choice sure but the reality is every suffering person can't fit inside one country's border...it's just not realistic and sometimes that is unavoidable.
Interesting, given that the wealthy countries that people flee to are the ones that have a hand in causing the downfall of the countries they're fleeing from. The only "we" in this is that we in the wealthier nations benefit from the resources of developing countries, leave them to figure out how to manage on the scraps we leave and then we scold them and shun them for trying not to die.
@@lunacouer I'm from a former English Colony and the country eventually gained it's independence from them decades ago. So is your argument that former colonies, who were destabilized however many decades ago should migrate to England? What's the outcome in that situation? Destabilize England...ok and then what? Now they can't help you or help themselves. To what end? Like I said, too much emotion in the discourse and not a lot of logic. In a perfect world it would be great for the wealthy countries to pay for what they did but the reality is that's just not possible to do anymore. The people who were affected the most are dead and gone and the ones left behind let's be honest are enjoying more privilege than those that should have been rewarded. We can only move forward

I think the animals being friendly to Theo is based on the idea that animals can truly sense kindness and compassion in someone.
Merry Christmas guys
This is one of the best Sci-fi films and very underrated.
I would love Cuaron to do more Sci-fi films in the future.
I cry everytime I see them going through the soliders and they are almost in a worship posture as the baby passes by.
