It could be a friendship or relationship that has grown toxic because of the influence heroin was having on both participants. So to save them both, Brian is walking away from it because things could only get worse. Their lives are always even better. Also musicians get tired of playing same version for hundred times as well as fans to listen. Different arrangements help to like the song like you listen to it for the first time, to keep it fresh a little bit longer
