This is probably one of the best informational videos for both beginners and more experienced people. I think it was one of the coolest things to give an example using a very well known map. Awesome job on the vid, and I can't wait to see more!!!
Ramping is so incredibly important in surf, and even something like the line you take on a ramp can be crucial for how your run is gonna go. Sometimes, an immediate bottom-out on a ramp can lose you units, while a consistent, delayed line to the bottom of the ramp helps you gain units. Goliath B2 is a good example, because if you don't bottom out immediatly, it gets you a better angle to second, which in turn helps to to more easily finish the bonus.
Great video. I think it's worth mentioning that looking up or down has no impact on your movement and gaining or losing height is only dependent on how much you move your mouse into or away from the ramp. Also with vertical mouse movement out of the equation, saying up or down the ramp becomes less confusing.
i actually learned a lot from this, this is what i needed to get from t5 to t6 and above, i couldnt figure all of this alone, i'm not playing that much these days but when i come back i'll make sure to re watch this video and try to apply those i'm sure it'll make a huge difference in my units
I think I've watched this 40 times now just to pick apart all the info, this is such a great video. And thanks to this I've completed my first few maps including a tier 2 :)
the biggest takeaway for new players - before you board a ramp, strafe such that the angle you're boarding the ramp is as perpendicular with the ramp as possible. think about what happens when you smack into the ramp, same as smacking into a wall. minimize unit loss due to collision with ramps
The thing I’m imagining as I’m learning how to surf is that my character is very delicate, (made out of glass or something idk) and so I’m trying not to have any blunt accelerations or decelerations in any direction, like landing and clunking on the edge of a ramp or smacking into the side when boarding from the same side, seemed to help tons.
I remember the first time I surfed I just rage quit immediately. But later I discovered leafy and after months of watching his surf game play I gave surf another try and copied his movements. It was like night and day. Sometimes just watching someone better than you will subconsciously rub off on you.
you have to see it like a lane change on the highway usng your car. some ramps stop not in the same line as the last, you to do the adjustment you move the mouse as slightly as the gap, and turn allows you to. as soon as you touch the ramp you want to be parrallel with the ramp, or slightly pointing downwards. on the turns i can only add dont focus on staying on the same height on the ramp, move your mouse exactly like the turn is angled. so if the turn starts very flat, and then keeps getting tighter the same way you have to move the mouse according to that turn change. it takes a few tries, but then you have the feeling to it.
Just what I was needing I think the biggest thing I will take from this video is ramping and pushing/testing ur skill and n higher tier maps. Also watched that tas run of batmans the other day and it’s just memorising.
Crouching is mostly used to narrowly miss the edge of the startzone. In run, you can press crouch to make your playermodel a bit smaller, so you fit under/over obstacles. You can also perform a crouchboard on ramps, but that is a highly advanced technique that mostly only high level surfers use
gz on sponsor, thanks for the content. learning this way is so different from how it was back in the day when you just had to spec good people with !skeys
that is a turnbind, on counter strike: source you can use "bind mouse1 +left" and "cl_yawspeed 80" to reproduce whats done in the video. I use Q and E which is not recommended.
while surfing on low sense is definetly better for most people, high sense is also possible. personally i only have around 2-3 mousewidths of space for handmovement so i play on high sense but did a few tier 4 maps and did good progress on tier 5s aswell. and ive never really fully tryharded on surf (did put in a good amount of hours for sure though).
when you fly onto a ramp, you will have an imaginary arrow in 3d space that describes your direction. the ramp is a plane, and your vector needs to be parallell with the ramp to not lose speed. that is the most important thing to know, or one of the most important
Everyone gaslit me into thinking that you should strafe into the ramp for bends. Thank you for confirming that strafing the other way was correct because that's the only way I have been able to do it.
For the long curves you can still do that you just have to move your mouse further into the curve. It's generally easier because there's no chance of coming off the ramp and colliding with it again, which will happen if you are strafing into the ramp and move your mouse too fast. It's a lot harder to it perfectly, but it's faster because it's the shortest line.
Here's something I've noticed new surfers make a mistake on. Unless you are on a curved ramp, you ALWAYS press D if you are moving your mouse to the right, and A if you're moving your mouse to the left. You NEVER press D and move your mouse to the left and vice versa. You only do this if you're on a curved ramp.
Man how i would love videos like this 15 years ago lmao. I usually only surfed freestyle deathmatches in css but i did love to watch records on hard maps back then. I was breastfed quake engine physics so i prefered classic vq3 strafe defrag over cs bunnyhop physics but i always loved how smooth surfing is. Very well made video.
Is there a proper up to date guide on how to host a surf server? I just want to practice by myself on one map for as long as I want, but it's so hard to find the right settings and plugins.
momentum mod has a freely available version, its either 0.6.0 or 0.8.5, where u can practice any map. You should check out their website/discord server. I would not recommend setting up your own surf server as there are hundreds of fixes, no-jump zones, triggers changes etc. on servers that you wont have
One question , been surfing for 2 to 3 years now , i always played with a higher sen so i could deal with spin or long spin , how do you guy with low sen deal with it , i rly want to know , dont you guys run out of desk space?
we primarily use turnbinds, a tool that allows you to spin at a consistent rate. The binds are +left and +right but I also have a tutorial for turnbinds on my channel
Is it ok to play surf by downloading surf map on workshop and just play offline by myself? I generally don't like joining community server where it instantly starts to download a bunch of custom stuff and I don't have control for which map will be on
I would highly advise against playing offline. If you want to avoid downloads, just stick to GFL and Surfheaven as they have multiple servers and all the maps listed.
@RepsterSurf What are the upside and downside to offline vs on hosted server? I know the obvious one are the plug ins like saving location etc, but what if I don't care and just want to casually surf and finish a map? Also does ping matter when it comes to surf server?
@@-dash. ping only matters for bhop and teleports but not that big of an issue. Well honestly, if you're just going to try surf a couple times offline is fine. But for long term play surf servers have fixed hundreds of issues on maps, allow for systems like saveloc and centerspeed, and a timer to track how fast you surf. surf is like a speedrunning game for most so time matters.

So I love the save locks and +right key binds but it's impossible for me to progress. I was in the top 25 of KSF years ago and nothing existed. I know there is change. I'm still good enough to do some tier 6 maps but I don't use binds and have never used a save lock I still don't understand that crap. That's also why I hate these maps where I can go 70% of the way and they add a 6 second spin near the end. I have to like move my keyboard out of the way and raise my mouse speed for that whole map just for that 1 section of a map that takes a little more than a minute,
q and e are turn binds. They help you turn faster/turn without even moving your mouse, so that u can do long spins with low sensitivity. Shift and Control i would guess one of them is crouch and im not sure about the other. for turn binds you would do something like this in console: bind e +right

I haven’t surfed since 1.6 and your videos have been super helpful for getting back into things. Great stuff!
