- Most pellet smokers now a days, at least with all the cool new tech will cost you in the ball park of $1,000 - $1,500.
But are budget pellet smokers worth it if you can't afford that?
Today we look at the Pit Boss Pro Series 850.
Sure, it does not have the new rapid fire igniter, or the VST mode for extra smoke flavor or a big chamber to hold more BBQ.
But can it still make good BBQ? Let's find out...

Hot take: Maybe "cheap grills" just aren't overpriced?
I just got the 850 on memorial weekend for $450! Already smoked some ribs, chicken wings and grilled some steaks that made great grill marks too. I love this grill!
It would be nice to see a longer smoke on this one, like a pork butt or brisket just to see how a cheaper model does with a long smoke.
great segment. i just picked up a Pit Boss 820 Sportsman at Tractor Supply. It was on sale with $100 off. I had a Z-Grill and am getting rid of it. the Pit Boss with the bluetooth connection and temp probes are awesome. thanks for sharing.
This is the smoker I have. I have been using it for over 2 years and Love it.
I think at 500 bucks, you should still get a heck of a smoker. As 500 bucks although considering it “budget” is still a good amount of money for a bbq. That said my Laredo from pit boss was a little under 500 bucks and does really well. YMMV.
That steak looks fantastic!
Agreed, $500 isn't really cheap. Walmart has the Pit Boss Lexington for $300 and the Pit Boss Classic for $400.
I’ve had my PB850PS2 for a couple years now. My only complaints are how long it takes to get up to temp sometimes and that it doesn’t have a “P” setting or the option to upgrade to a VST controller so that you can control your smoke more.
Since you are no longer using your PitBoss vertical smoker you can send it my way. Not to mention you have so many grills/smokers taking up space on your wonderful patio.
Lol...I do need to make some room!
Hey I wouldn't mind a lil smoker too, LOL. Thank you 🙏 for the videos
The 850 is a wonderful starter grill. I love mine, but I just bought the Pro Series 6 vertical. I'm watching a lot of your videos to learn more about using the 6
Is this a review or a commercial.
But wait....there's more. lol
Right??!!!
I own 3 pit boss Lexingtons. 1 onyx edition lexington. all under 500 bucks. turns out amazing food.. only deafferents is size and cost. ..
I got my PB850PS the Friday before MDW and love it wanted to get the titan or the timberline XL but honestly no need till this one decides to retire
I like my 850. Only issue I have is it seems like I have to take some extra steps to get any smoke flavor
I love my pro series 4v1 smoker never had any issues with it
Definitely does the job Andrew! Been thinking about buying a cheaper model for my first go round, your videos Definitely help out. Have a great weekend, cheers brother 🍺
Yeah, PAPA doesn't to them expensive ones. Yummy looking sirloin Andrew.
I want a link to those cutting boards to hell with the grill
Same
Yep please tell me what they are!
Good stuff bro!
Had the impression this was gonna be about the less expensive models talking about capabilities of smoke infusion. Isn’t that mostly why people buy these?
I find a lot of people get a pellet smoker to get their feet wet when trying out backyard bbq. The more expensive pellet smokers will have "Super Smoke" modes but the entry level models will sure get the job done and making really good BBQ. But if you are after a true BBQ smoky taste, and offset is the way to go.
I'm always a fan of the diamond pattern grates
Same here!
Nice one mate!
Congrats on the 100k
I like how your kids get to try Wagyu beef hot dogs.... I'd love to know what meat was in the hot dogs we ate as kids
I see a future joke somewhere in there. ;)
@@GrillSergeant haha of course

@@GrillSergeant thank you sir .
Wonder how the Pit Boss classic does
Great! I have yet to use a Pit Boss smoker I did not like.
Have you ever used their combo (pellet smoker side and a propane side) grills??
I'm hungry now.
What internal temp did you remove the steak?
Thanks...
I pulled the steak at 125 to let it rest for 10 mins. Man it came out sooooo good!
I’m thinking about getting the Pit Boss Savannah this weekend. I’ve won some decent money using the Prime Time combination along with the Moo Magic marinade from Flaps20.
Where did u get the thing for the meat that looks like a laundry basket.
Ha! That's the Drip EZ tub. bbqdripez.com/collections/prep-tub

You said you took 3rd in the competition…. What kinda grill did you use?
It was on a Spitfire Charcoal Grill. www.spitfiregrills.com/
@@GrillSergeant thanks a lot… I’ll take a look. I’m really torn right now between the PitBoss Titan and the Traeger Ironwood XL. The Traeger is about $1800 at Ace and if I get the Titan, with shipping to Idaho I’ll be right at $1800 also. Any thoughts on one versus the other?
I have an Oklahoma Joes that keeps having issues. Trying to decide if I should just grab El Cheapo from Walmart.
I love my Austin onyx xl
What are those cutting board tubs?!
