I hope the folks at KJ are watching this and taking notes. They have an opportunity to really set themselves apart from BGE if they keep/improve their warranty service.
I have an anecdote about Louisiana Grills Cermaic K24 sold at Costco USA... I purchased mine in 03/2020. Loved it for 2 years until 05/2022 when I found that the firebox had experienced a crack towards the bottom. Called "Danson, inc." who requested I send a photograph and a sales receipt. They reviewed it and asked what color I want... Two weeks later I see a semi backing up my driveway and they dropped off a brand new entire grill on a pallet. They didn't even want the old grill back. I'm not sure if I was lucky or if this is what they always do, but it was absolutely insane to me.
Submitted an online claim through Kamado Joe for a damaged gasket on delivery and a cracked deflector plate soon after, both were honored and arrived within 1 week. This was even during pandemic related shipping delays in 2020.
I submitted a warranty claim to KJ for a firebox crack on delivery and never heard back from them. I have had this for a few years now and everything seems fine but it was disappointing for sure to get ghosted.
@@briansimon1263 I heard some not so great moments during Covid supply issues and again a year or so back when warehouses were merged together as part of joining the middleby family of companies but from what I can tell in group conversations things sound back to themselves more recently again
Same, they send me a deflector plate, gasket, and paint after delivery. Came like 1-2 weeks after ordering. Also, after a year, I took out the ceramic plates from inside the and base ring was broke. Into 2 pieces. They sent me new plates and base ring.
Last year my primo firebox broke in 3 places. The dealer went out of business during Covid and it was a 2014 model, so I had nothing. Still I contact Primo and filled out a warrant claim and they honored it despite not having all the documentation, I paid the $100 shipping cost. Two months later the new firebox cracked and again I submitted a warranty claim and again they honored it, with the exception I was not charged for shipping. They will have my business for life and in fact I’m considering a new Primo XL for 2024.
I'm on 3 Primo XL fire boxes since 2017. They keep sending them to me under warranty. The most recent replacement was a 'beta' firebox and different style cast iron piece. Both are much thicker. Really impressed with the customer service.
My 12 year old large BGE just had its first warranty claim for firebox crack….. Egg’s by the Bay got me a new fire box within a week with just pictures of damage and receipt
Seven years ago, my longtime gas grill was dying. I wanted to get back to using charcoal and was curious about kamado grilling but didn’t want to commit over a thousand dollars not knowing if I would like it. I bought an Akorn and it has done everything I wanted it to do. Now it is beginning to get little pin holes in various places so I am researching ceramic kamados. I am very interested in the Saffire Platinum Kamados with their Crucible firebox and size options. Have you had any experience with Saffire kamados?
1. PK grills are fantastic. Easy 2 zone, aluminum and stainless steel construction, easy temp control. They do burn more fuel. 2. The Blaze cast aluminum kamado is looking like more of a long term value with incredible construction and no worries of ceramic fragility.
BGE hired a new CEO a few months ago. Little did we realize that a change in our warranty's was one of the changes he was planning on making, Just another reason to buy and additional BEG's or any of their products directly from BGE. (haha you started talking about this as I was typing and posting this comment.) Maybe because of this his tenure will be short. One of the things that George McKerrow drilled into us at Rare & Ted's Montana Grill was that we all look good together and we all look bad together.
thank good i live in Europe and some of the rules for example the 2nd hand thing is against EU law so even if its in the terms of conditions it does not apply in Europe
As a big green egg owner I recommend kamado joe to folks the hinge system is better the gasket is better and it comes with more for a similar price. Is it of the same build quality as far as the ceramic?
The dealer could choose to absorb that on their own dime when placing a larger order which they also pay for. It just makes it more likely to wait longer and or have to pay for warranty parts
In Australia, similar to EU, warranty for second hand is transferred to buyer. Also here, warranty is not time limited, in that though a supplier may say 12 months warranty, the actual warranty is what the consumer expects would be the warranty given the price and quality of a good, which maybe well in excess of what the manufacturer dictates. I have claimed warranty twice the stated warranty. Also, the retailer is unable to simply pass the buck and tell you to speak to the manufacturer, they must honour the warranty and the engagement with the manufacturer.
I received a KJ Classic I with a chipped firebox piece and while it took many weeks to get a replacement, they sent it without much fuss. I'm a KJ fan for life.
I have a Kamado joe big joe 3. My dome cracked and Kamado joe replaced it within a week no questions asked, shortly after my hinge broke, again replaced with the new model hinge no questions asked. Customer service is awesome and would highly recommend. Another company with great customer service is vitamix blenders if you’re ever in need of a good blender.
How long ago was this? I have been hearing that something has changed lately and people have been having problems getting warranty done. I’m trying to decide between KJ and WSK. In my area there are no sales and used are very high so warranty is important to me.
I just purchased a used KJ big joe 1 - came with doejoe, the old style firebox was cracked but still useable, needs gasket replace also but also still useable - paid $800 canadian
I’m wanting a Kamado. It’s between KJ and WSK. I wish on your warranty video you addressed how responsive each company was and whether you actually talk to a human or not for warranty support. I’m hearing from several sources that KJ is email only and not at all responsive. Is this true?
So I'm looking at buying my first ever smoker, a brand new Konnected Joe, from a local retailer. Do the warranty changes you mentioned only apply to the BGE?
This is somewhat misleading. Kamado Joe (or any of these manufacturers) do not allow for their warranties to be transferable. BGE had a pretty big loophole that many distributors would honor warranty parts for BGE without receipt or being an original owner to keep your business and pass the cost to BGE. However, the warranty NEVER allowed the warranty to be transferred. They are simply closing the loophole because for decades distributors took advantage of it.
To be clear and I think I have that in the chart. No brand likes or allows second hand. It’s the making life worse for the original owner with a receipt that got downgraded.
Just got the classic 3 from Amazon for $1200.00 I have had a Masterbuilt 800 for a cpl years now and the price seemed right. I am a bit nervous about shipping I will inspect very well and if the box is damaged at all I will not accept delivery.
I understand, costs are costs, but as a company, youre offering a luxury product at a luxury product price, you should probably treat your customers accordingly, people buying these arent your average consumers going to walmart for a metal basin and fast light kingsford.
to be clear they all say first owner and no commercial use like restaurants. its the making it worse for owners with receipts and disallowing dealers to provide service when your in store that is a setback
I guess it was a slow grilling week... The best defense is a good offense, i.e., the best warranty is a high-quality product that never requires a warranty claim. I bought a Camp Chef Woodwind and had nothing but problems. Luckily Camp Chef took it back. Kudos to them. I had a Yoder YS640 that had terrible paint. Complaints to them fell on deaf ears. I love my Gozney Dome, but I've had two complete warranty replacements. They did this without complaining. My Big Joe after a year and a half -- I haven't had a single problem.
I talked to my two dealers in Alberta for BGE and neither had heard of these changes to the warranty. The one had already done two warranty claims in first few weeks of January and the one claim he didn't even know the guy and had zero proof of purchase and BGE still approved the warranty. I shared this video with the owner of the one store who I deal with a lot for farm stuff and he said he couldn't even finish watching this video as it was not at all how BGE handles warranty claims. That's just what I've found out while contacting my two dealers because I was concerned after watching this video.
I called my dealer to confirm after seeing post on the corporate big green egg forum and they said it’s true. Not sure why it’s 50/50… could be some dealers haven’t read the update or it could be something with enough push back from dealers head office is reconsidering
Just a comment I purchased my Komado Joe at an auction and thus could not obtain a receipt Komado Joe rejected my warranty registration . That was a bit concerning I also have a friend who has yet to be able to use his Smart Komado because of a broken part. He has been frustrated with the back and forth via email over the past MONTHS. I guess there is no way to call them...
@@SmokingDadBBQ Yup...I think that's the only way! Thank you for all of your great info! BTW ..looks like your Bills may go further than my Packers this year!
Wow, so effectively, this should almost kill the used market for BGEs, unless they want to sell them really cheap. That's my takeaway, and I really appreciate that you took time to show this to us James! Love the price comparisons and know that this is a lot of research.
I have submitted a couple of warranty repairs for my classic joe 3 that i bought in april of 21. I have gotten gaskets, the fire box bottom ring that the plates sit on, the entire bottom base, the handle for the lid, and some of the ceramic half moons. All were covered under warranty and customer service was extremly fast and helpful. One warranty item was sent out 21mins after i submitted the request. I finally had my first warranty claimed denied for the charcoal basket which is losing the bottom rings so its more like a plate now. It was denied for my warrarty period being up.
@@MrShaun_D1 not at all. I had a bbq guru on my Webber and I put it on KJ and it hold the temperature so well. This last Saturday I put a brisket on at around 7:30 pm and got the temperature set at 250 degrees and it held that temperature all night on one load of fuel. We are blessed to have this KJ. Especially for the deal we got it for.
Very useful video! I was worried you were talking about KJ downgrading their warranty and was relieved when it wasn't. I chose a KJ Classic II in March 2021 over the BGE in part based on your channel. I bought mine at Ace Hardware and they delivered it all assembled. I could have waited for the Classic III but I don't think I would have paid the extra money for a Classic III anyway. Last time I was in the Ace store I noticed they no longer carried KJ in store but had started stocking BGEs. I asked the clerk and he said the BGEs sold better. Next time I go in I might ask him about the new not so good BGE warranty just for fun.
I'm super glade you included USA made Primo to your list! (I LOVED MY XL) I feel like that superior brand is mistakenly overlooked compared to the others. (I cut my teeth with a used AKORN) With that being said, am I the only one who has bought a real (LSG) offset smoker and the awesome Primo is now taking up space in the garage? 🤔
I start off with an AKORN. Then for MANY great years the XL Primo was Perfect! Then too many friends and family want there meat smoked and you're ready for the next step. I currently have the 20x42 LSG with the off road package (it runs so smooth and efficiently) I keep the fire box in the garage and the smoke stack outside. I make eggs and bacon on the firebox the mornings I smoke. *On a side note, you have no idea how much I (we) love your videos through the years! YOU Sir, were a BIG part of of my beginning and I will always be subscriber from SC. @@SmokingDadBBQ
I believe it’s is the same as Kamado Joe, at least in the uk. I’ve had to provide valid dealer proof of purchase to claim anything on the kj warranty and it is not valid at all on 2nd hand kamados.
Nobody does. It’s the process for owners with a receipt that makes no sense to downgrade … and having bough 2 used eggs if you get them cheap enough to cover potential expensive parts than you’re likely ok which is why I shows the prices and used egg examples
While I am not a KJ or BGE owner because of the price point. I do own and use regularly a Char Griller Akron with great results. No worry of cracking and I have owned the same grill now for three years and it shows no signs of rust or corrosion even with is being stored outside in Pennsylvania. Just wanted to give my 2 cents for folks that may want to get into komado cooking at a lower price and not have to worry about the fragility of ceramic.
My local family owned BGE dealer charges a random cash amount (usually $20-25 USD) for warranty replaced parts. I think the guys just put it in their pockets. They say it's for shipping costs. I have bought 3 large BGE's and a mini from them. Considering making the jump to Kamado Joe partially because of this channel.
Don't pay the shipping fee. Just have them attach your warranty issue along with their next shipping order from BGE. It won't cost the store any extra.
About two years ago I bought a Joe Jr second hand in EU. KJ site at that point had it mentioning, warranty is not transferable but only applies to the original owner. This is not on the website anymore, although is saying if not from authorized dealer - no warranty. I made a call to the local authorized dealer, should I buy it second hand or this will void the warranty if anything happens. They said we do not care who bought it first, just ask the Owner to provide you with the warranty card (paper) he received with his purchase. If you had it, you're covered. So a fire ring and a deflector plate later, I can confirm this to be true. P.S - Glad the Jr is making a reappearance in the vid, but what is with the pizza oven?
I really dont get the appeal of KJ OR BGE cookers. Between all the accesories necessary to make good food and risk of cracks etc it just seems like waaaay too much work and effort.
I cooked a brisket last night while I slept. 20 hours of zero effort. It's very versatile which is important since I'm space limited. Ceramic doesn't rust out. Also not sure about the accessories thing. Just use a ceramic deflector for indirect cooking, which is included at least with KJ. Anything is purely optional.
Pretty amazing in this day and age that they would make things this much harder. I guess I have to thank my Canadian friend for beating me in a brisket contest so I could switch!
Pretty sad, BGE has always been behind in innovation and now customer service is going backwards. Sears couldn't survive on it's brand name, time to wake up before it's too late. 🍻
Second hand Eggs have never been covered by Warranty and it's the same for KJ as it is for BGE. For this very reason a smart consumer would never pay more than half of retail for a used BGE or KJ. Half the value of the grill is the Warranty. As for the rest of it, it's still going to be dealers discretion, BGE and KJ can attempt to enforce the other policies. Neither KJ or BGE have large dealer networks they can't afford to piss their dealers off. I can't imagine my dealer here doing anything different aside from verifying proof of purchase. I've had firebox claims in the past and all I did was show up with a picture of my cracked firebox and they have handed me a replacement part right there. They didn't even ask to see my POP at all, now maybe they looked it up on the computer but either way how is BGE going to know if they hand our existing stock and replace it with the one that BGE sends to the dealer. They won't. Much ado about nothing.
Yes the chart I put up showed nobody warranties second hand grills. The change is really for people that have receipts making the process more complicated than it need be imo
Glad I got my @KamadoJoe Big Joe 3. I've had my issues with KJ service, but I was never told to go home or have to wait until they want to order the part.
BGE Canada doesn’t actually exist … they license it to a distributor who then manages retailers so that can vary country by country. I have friends 30min south of me in the US who have similar experiences to what you said
Great information, yet again! I second your comments about the Akorn. They dont last as long but for several years they will work amazingly well for the price point. Then buy a couple more and you’re still under the price of some of the other options listed.
I've had a Akorn for 5 years now. I use it 2-3 times a week all year long even when temp drops in the teens! Works out great! Only issue I've had is the dome hinges and I was able to fix. Great value. Do I want a KJ? YES someday!
Has anyone worked out how to set the default temp to from Fahrenheit to Celsius on the Kamado Joe Konnected Joe? I can change on the app but defaults back to Fahrenheit when I power off and back on. I submitted this question to KamadoJoe on their website over a month ago, but I have had no response.
From the manual .... manuals-cdn.masterbuilt.com/kamado-joe.myshopify.com/KJ15041123_KonnectedJoe_IM_Optimized.pdf How do I switch from Fahrenheit to Celsius or Celsius to Fahrenheit on the grill controller? STEP 1 = power grill OFF with switch on rear STEP 2 = power ON grill with switch on rear (grill will beep, controller will turn on, then turn black) STEP 3 = while controller is black, press and HOLD set temp button STEP 4 = press POWER button on controller STEP 5 = scroll knob to switch between F and C or C and F NOTE = you can also switch from C to F or F to C in the App
Well, BGE is out of the contention of me purchasing one. When they start tightening the warranties like this, they simply don't stand behind their product. Also, having to wait for the dealer to place an order three months is totally unacceptable. I would then fire them as a dealer.
I wondered about including blaze and goldens but haven’t finished my review yet. Online there are some things but I don’t think I’ve seen a firebox complaint
So for the average person who has a single Egg nothing really changed. You've always needed proof of purchase and the serial number/pics. My one and only warranty claim I took in pics, serial number and p.o.p.. They ordered the firebox and I picked it up in about a week. Honestly it changes nothing for me. I'm not dragging a broken pile sooty, dirty, sharp ceramic to the dealer and expecting to get a new part right then. And freight has always been a charge if you wanted it outside the dealers normal deliveries. I would think that is the same now.
The main change for owners with a receipt is the dealer is now prohibited from servicing you in store even with a receipt. They submit and a few days later you can go back once you get approval or reject notice making it slightly more frustrating than before when you could walk out with the part if* it was in stock
That's how every warranty part claim I have filed has worked already. I've always just called the dealer, sent pics of damage/serial number and went and got the part when they had it in. None of the dealers here in Wisco seem to have a pile of spare parts just laying around waiting. They have store stock of full grills and accessories but none I've seen stock extra fire boxes or rings or any other replacement parts. I've never had a reason to need to walk out of the dealer same day with a part. I mean my last replacement of a L firebowl is still in the box. Existing one is severely cracked but still cooks fine. I just proactively got a replacement so when it fails during a cleaning I have it on hand already. Only reason I can think of would be if something catastrophically failed, but that's probably accidental breakage anyways and not covered either way. @@SmokingDadBBQ
So many people in the discussion on the egghead forum are saying they are in a similar position… I don’t get why make life worse for people who have done it the right way and supported the company for years
@@SmokingDadBBQ - I woulds definitely not buy a BGE again. I would buy a KJ, if I wanted another kamado style. Right now, my plan is to build my own vertical pleelt smoker with very large capacity. I might build a food-fired smoker 'shack' with a completely remote, offset fire chamber.
You should have put BGE in the title rather than trying to hide it. It would probably get more views as there are a lot of BGE owners that are going to see the red kamados in a lot of your thumbnail backgrounds and simply ignore the video. Title is also a bit click bait-y. You do a good job of thoroughly going through the different warranties, this content is genuinely valuable to watchers, I don't think you need to hide the headlines in the chapters either.
Thanks. I have a tool that does a b testing on different title and thumb combos and it said this one did better so I left it but always appreciate feedback
I'll share an unpopular opinion. I have had a Vision Kamado for 5 years. It's not nearly as fancy, and the company has delays in responding to warranty stuff. That said, it was a third the price of Team Red or Green. I can literally throw it away and buy a new one and still be ahead. My brisket and ribs continue to turn out just as good as many others. Value is not always in big brand recognition. YMMV
Warranty is a maker or a breaker on any high-priced item for me. I always look at warranty information before buying. I'm looking for customer service, cost of replacement, ease of replacement, and convenience to me. I don't want to be running back and forth to my dealer just to be told I need to go through the website. That's a load of hooey! My time is just as valuable as any Kamado CEO and it shouldn't be wasted running around trying to get replacement parts that are under warranty. I also don't want to be without my cooker for days or weeks to get a replacement part. That's just ridiculous. I'm in the market for a new Kamado and big green egg, based on their warranty, will not even be considered or looked at by me.
Or you could just get Blaze or Komodo Kamado which are nigh indestructible anyway instead of being incredibly fragile :) The Blaze marketing is super fun, as they do things like shooting it with .50 rifles, setting off explosives in it, etc. KK isn't indestructible, but I've heard stories of people trying to destroy one with a sledgehammer and not being able to as it's so thick.
BGE is much like Harley Davidson. Better, more innovative options are on the market for less money, and they're just being kept afloat by the blind brand loyalty of their boomer fanbase.
To be fair, when I got my BGE there weren't a lot of options - it was the only ceramic I knew of to be honest. I would consider changing brands, but why now? I mean I have all the accessories at this point (not ALL - I would love a rotisserie and the pizza adapter). Anyway. For new purchases I have already recommended red over green just for the basics that are included.
BGE is made in a country that doesn't use slave labor. The red one is made in a country that literally is known to use slave labor. Maybe the red one doesn't use slave labor but they can't guarantee their supply chain doesn't and they definetly benefit from it.
@iDreamOfWeenie Sure, let's just pretend like lower wages and higher profits dont equate to more revenue for advertising, R&D and warranties. Yall can keep supporting a company that purposely produces product in a country with ethnic slave and keep telling yourself you aren't part of the problem.
looks like the resale price of these grills just went down. unstead of a life long customer they are fine with people having a bad teast in their mouth. these grills are big cost.
I just purchased my first KJ classic used for 475, everything seems to be in perfect with use condition but not having warranty is a bit of a scare. Should i be worried about anything in particular?
Let me tell you about Chargriller. You'll never speak to a human. They don't have that. Email support was horrible. I asked for a phone call and couldn't get that. I had to wait over 4 months for a thermostat. I didn't wait and did a hack fix of course by purchasing one for a different grill brand entirely and making it happen. I tried way more than the average human to contact someone and it just never happened. Even found their parent company but they just had an automated message and no way to leave a message. I recommend if you're buying a grill of any kind you check their customer service and make sure you can actually contact someone. At least to start anyway. Of course it doesn't help if they are sold or whatever but at least you tried. Anyways...buyer beware 🤷♂
It seems whenever there is a fork in the road with one lane going to better experience and the other making things worse than before …. It feels as an owner that they keep picking wrong
Giving up on Kamado Joe. The failure of the Ikamand and the sellout of the company to low end distributors make me prepared to trash my big joe. Pellet Grilles are so much less hassle and the betrayal of Kamado Joe makes me hate the whole Kamado market
Your information referencing dealers not being allowed to take care of customers with a purchase receipt is not correct. That statement was put out by a distributor and not from Big Green Egg and has since been corrected. Dealers are allowed and encouraged to take care of customers with warranty issues. Take a look at the KJ Forums and people waiting 6 months or more trying to get warranty parts if they get a response at all. Also BGE didn't change the warranty as it relates to used or second hand product. This has never been covered under the lifetime warranty. It would be great to see you address these false statements in your video or a follow up video.
I had three dealers verify it but I appreciate since then the confusion around how the same policies were to be enforced are more favourable for customers … there are many examples of long time egg customers sharing examples on the egg groups of these policies impacting them as original owners who registered and were told they don’t need receipts only to find out decades later it’s mandatory. BGE has been doing a listening tour and perhaps they got enough feedback to change course for the better. Should they ever post any official statements I will be sure to link them
I love the channel, the videos and the details on all the content, but boy, I don't think I ever got so annoyed by someone's hands as I did with this video. I stopped counting how many times you raised both hands after 250 times. Just something to think about it.
Welp, no Big Green Egg for me. Proof of purchase can be lost. I mean why? It's stupid. The things are notorious for cracking. No shipping. Hell with the customer, I guess. That and everything else you covered. Not gonna buy one although I am finishing a patio this year so I can grill out. Customer service no longer a thing for them. The Egg is no longer a thing for me.
I didn’t understand why either… even if you’re registered and submitted a warranty but now lost your receipt if you can’t produce it for each claim no dice
KJ isn't any better. I brought classic joe in 2012/2013-when it was only a classic or big joe. And you could get them in black. My firebox finally cracked 2 years ago. And they won't honor the warranty. Receipt was lost somewhere in moving houses, so yeah KJ only cares about you as much as BGE does.
@@joshualarue3335 all the warranties say that they only apply to the original owner. Weber goes a little further to say if you have proof that you won it in a contest or promotion that it may be covered but all big 4 state warranty is intended for the original owner and a receipt is needed. What BGE changed is making the experience worse for my two eggs where I have a receipt banning the option for me to walk in and get service on the spot

Same, they send me a deflector plate, gasket, and paint after delivery. Came like 1-2 weeks after ordering. Also, after a year, I took out the ceramic plates from inside the and base ring was broke. Into 2 pieces. They sent me new plates and base ring.
Never got back to me for cracks around handle. Will never buy from them ever better and cheaper in the market.

Glad you’re back in business quick
Seven years ago, my longtime gas grill was dying. I wanted to get back to using charcoal and was curious about kamado grilling but didn’t want to commit over a thousand dollars not knowing if I would like it. I bought an Akorn and it has done everything I wanted it to do. Now it is beginning to get little pin holes in various places so I am researching ceramic kamados. I am very interested in the Saffire Platinum Kamados with their Crucible firebox and size options. Have you had any experience with Saffire kamados?
James your analytical approach and attention to detail make me wonder whether you are a consultant!
Maybe in another life. Product marketing and sales roles my whole career
Thanks for always doing our homework for us James! A+ as always!
My pleasure!
Apologies as I forgot to include this but based on my memory BGE has never included BGE's that were sold second hand
thank good i live in Europe and some of the rules for example the 2nd hand thing is against EU law so even if its in the terms of conditions it does not apply in Europe

As a big green egg owner I recommend kamado joe to folks the hinge system is better the gasket is better and it comes with more for a similar price. Is it of the same build quality as far as the ceramic?
I believe the Kamado Joe is made in China where the Big Green Egg is made in Mexico. I'd imagine the process is similar between the two.
Great informative video! So if I had a bge base that needs replacement are you saying I need to pay for shipping now? That would be costly!

I have had warranty claims honored by Kamado Joe my first classic1 i had purchased second hand.
Amazing 🤩 customer service
Thanks for sharing
I received a KJ Classic I with a chipped firebox piece and while it took many weeks to get a replacement, they sent it without much fuss. I'm a KJ fan for life.
glad to hear it was made right
I have a Kamado joe big joe 3.
Thanks for sharing on both fronts. Good to know about the blender too
I had a similar experience. My dome cracked and they replaced it within a few weeks. It took some persistence but they finally honored the warranty.
How long ago was this? I have been hearing that something has changed lately and people have been having problems getting warranty done. I’m trying to decide between KJ and WSK. In my area there are no sales and used are very high so warranty is important to me.

I’m wanting a Kamado. It’s between KJ and WSK. I wish on your warranty video you addressed how responsive each company was and whether you actually talk to a human or not for warranty support. I’m hearing from several sources that KJ is email only and not at all responsive. Is this true?
Weber customer service is second to none.
They have been fantastic any time I need them too
So I'm looking at buying my first ever smoker, a brand new Konnected Joe, from a local retailer. Do the warranty changes you mentioned only apply to the BGE?
BGe is the only brand who updated their warranty on Jan 1 so these changes are exclusive to them.
@@SmokingDadBBQ Thanks for that clarification..
Great vid. Wht do you think bout the Primo Kamado?
Exactly
Why is everyone so down on BGE when KJ has the same policy?
to be clear they all say first owner and no commercial use like restaurants. its the making it worse for owners with receipts and disallowing dealers to provide service when your in store that is a setback
Well said
Hi James I bought my classic 2 in Oct 22 from Costco it was the last one and the floor model. Had a couple of marks on it. I got it for $799 Can.
Wow great price. I used normal list price but there are deals for sure
Just a comment
I purchased my Komado Joe at an auction and thus could not obtain a receipt
Komado Joe rejected my warranty registration .
That was a bit concerning
I also have a friend who has yet to be able to use his Smart Komado because of a broken part. He has been frustrated with the back and forth via email over the past MONTHS.

Wow, so effectively, this should almost kill the used market for BGEs, unless they want to sell them really cheap. That's my takeaway, and I really appreciate that you took time to show this to us James! Love the price comparisons and know that this is a lot of research.
MRSP??? Isn't it MSRP= manufacturer's suggested retail price? Do they call it something else in Canada?
lol no it’s the same … trying to do too much from memory and got myself tongue tied 😂
Just picked KJ classic 1 at my local military PX for $199!!!!!
how do you like it? Have you had trouble maintaining the temperature?
I am sure they might make more margin selling one brand over the other but the market share data says otherwise
Very in depth James! That was extremely helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Which LSG did you get?
I start off with an AKORN. Then for MANY great years the XL Primo was Perfect! Then too many friends and family want there meat smoked and you're ready for the next step. Touching on the Walmart one day flash deals, do you get the full warranty if purchased this way ?
If they are authorized to sell yes any authorized dealer has warranty regardless of the sale price
I believe it’s is the same as Kamado Joe, at least in the uk. I’ve had to provide valid dealer proof of purchase to claim anything on the kj warranty and it is not valid at all on 2nd hand kamados.
As far as i have always known, BGE has never covered 2nd hand eggs. If you get a great deal on a 2nd hand egg, it comes at a cost. I think thats fair.
100% why I included it at the new grills for less than used ceramic brands at the end of the
Yes sir, saw that at the end and I’m glad you did, love your videos and keep up the great work.
I wonder what it costs the manufacturer to have these grills/ smokers made? For instance it costs apple $10 to make an iPhone 14.
P.S - Glad the Jr is making a reappearance in the vid, but what is with the pizza oven?
isn't it MSRP? never heard of MRSP :D
😂
Any chance you will be reviewing the SNS Kamado? Great American company.
I really dont get the appeal of KJ OR BGE cookers. Between all the accesories necessary to make good food and risk of cracks etc it just seems like waaaay too much work and effort.
I do appreciate the marvel of my offset simplicity parts wise … but you sub that for more active participation in fire management
My medium Big Green Egg just cracked and the receipt is a nowhere to be found (it's over 14 years old), I couldn't be more pissed.
Hopefully you have a dealer that fights through the red tape

Pretty sad, BGE has always been behind in innovation and now customer service is going backwards. Sears couldn't survive on it's brand name, time to wake up before it's too late. 🍻
Well said
Second hand Eggs have never been covered by Warranty and it's the same for KJ as it is for BGE.
Does slow roller work in Large BGE?😊
Glad I got my @KamadoJoe Big Joe 3. I've had my issues with KJ service, but I was never told to go home or have to wait until they want to order the part.
I went directly BGE and they mailed me the part right away ; and the Egg is almost 30 years old. No charge
BGE Canada doesn’t actually exist … they license it to a distributor who then manages retailers so that can vary country by country. I have friends 30min south of me in the US who have similar experiences to what you said
Did you provide the original receipt
@@ronscott700 yes. I have and still have my original receipts
Great information, yet again! I second your comments about the Akorn. They dont last as long but for several years they will work amazingly well for the price point. Then buy a couple more and you’re still under the price of some of the other options listed.
It may be less over a lifetime to keep replacing them than the prices of some top end grill models
I've had a Akorn for 5 years now. I use it 2-3 times a week all year long even when temp drops in the teens! Works out great! Only issue I've had is the dome hinges and I was able to fix. Great value. Do I want a KJ? YES someday!
Would love to you to talk about vision grills
The Komodo Kamodo brand still covers everything for life, though it's is not an inexpensive brand.
you're right about the $$
TLDR - BGE is limiting warranty only to original buyers, and dealers cannot replace parts in the store anymore.
From the manual .... manuals-cdn.masterbuilt.com/kamado-joe.myshopify.com/KJ15041123_KonnectedJoe_IM_Optimized.pdf
How do I switch from Fahrenheit to Celsius or Celsius to Fahrenheit on the grill controller?
STEP 1 = power grill OFF with switch on rear
STEP 2 = power ON grill with switch on rear (grill will beep, controller will turn on, then turn black)
STEP 3 = while controller is black, press and HOLD set temp button
STEP 4 = press POWER button on controller
STEP 5 = scroll knob to switch between F and C or C and F
NOTE = you can also switch from C to F or F to C in the App
Well, BGE is out of the contention of me purchasing one. When they start tightening the warranties like this, they simply don't stand behind their product. Also, having to wait for the dealer to place an order three months is totally unacceptable. I would then fire them as a dealer.
I guess i got a good deal. Classic 1, new only missing the handle. $400
Good price
This is why the Goldens was worth the price of admission for me..... They have a warranty, but realistically I don't think it will ever be needed
Reluctant to buy used ceramics since you never know how prior owner cooked in it. IE they used starter fluid or starter infused charcoal.
This is true
I bought directly from BGE in their original location on Clairmont Rd, more than 25 years ago... of course I don't have a receipt now. I'm not happy.
That sounds like a fun project
Great information, James.
Thanks
Isnt primo's cost attributed to being American made ceramic?
They are. And the parts are less than BGe which is why the math said you’re safe paying more. But I found one for 800
Very interesting stuff James!
Thanks Ron
You should have put BGE in the title rather than trying to hide it. It would probably get more views as there are a lot of BGE owners that are going to see the red kamados in a lot of your thumbnail backgrounds and simply ignore the video. Title is also a bit click bait-y.
You do a good job of thoroughly going through the different warranties, this content is genuinely valuable to watchers, I don't think you need to hide the headlines in the chapters either.
Thanks. I have a tool that does a b testing on different title and thumb combos and it said this one did better so I left it but always appreciate feedback
Well, BGE just came off my list. Sounds like a company that may be in financial trouble because they are no longer the only dog in the show.
YMMV
I agree smoking deal
Innovation doesn't necessarily mean it's for the better for the consumer! And all that new product R&D doesn't pay for itself you know!
I really don’t understand what’s going on with some of these decisions
Or you could just get Blaze or Komodo Kamado which are nigh indestructible anyway instead of being incredibly fragile :)
The Blaze marketing is super fun, as they do things like shooting it with .50 rifles, setting off explosives in it, etc. KK isn't indestructible, but I've heard stories of people trying to destroy one with a sledgehammer and not being able to as it's so thick.
I love their ads
BGE is much like Harley Davidson. Better, more innovative options are on the market for less money, and they're just being kept afloat by the blind brand loyalty of their boomer fanbase.
To be fair, when I got my BGE there weren't a lot of options - it was the only ceramic I knew of to be honest. I would consider changing brands, but why now? I mean I have all the accessories at this point (not ALL - I would love a rotisserie and the pizza adapter).
Anyway. For new purchases I have already recommended red over green just for the basics that are included.
Joe has put a lot behind their R&D to make their product lines more functional. If I could put a sloroller in my egg I would be happy.
BGE is made in a country that doesn't use slave labor. The red one is made in a country that literally is known to use slave labor. Maybe the red one doesn't use slave labor but they can't guarantee their supply chain doesn't and they definetly benefit from it.
@@ivancalderon852 how does that keep them from innovating?
However i’m on team Red, it’s a loss for BGE customers. BGE is reducing costs for US market due to a deteriorating economy.
I’d love to be a fly on the wall for that internal discussion. It just doesn’t make sense to me
You know what they say, Wouldn't you rather own a weber.
BGE just keeps making anti consumer choices. I would have hoped the increased competition would have made them better
I probably wont consider buying a used BGE. Bad move imo
Makes no sense
Should they ever post any official statements I will be sure to link them
Just get a Komodo Kamado - no worries ever.
If you live in a cold country that is very different. KK is extraordinary.Enjoy
I love the channel, the videos and the details on all the content, but boy, I don't think I ever got so annoyed by someone's hands as I did with this video. I stopped counting how many times you raised both hands after 250 times. Just something to think about it.
But how else will sounds come out my mouth if my hands stay down… oh wait 😂
Say no to BGE 😡
Woof woof. Thumbs Up 👍🏾 Everyone
